Pest control

Updated: October 2026Hub page

Pest control covers ant poison, wasp spray, slug pellets, moth traps, mosquito products and mole repellers, and the other product types on the cards below. Each comparison says what that product is for, and which checks still apply when the listings change.

The cards are the way in. A comparison holds the current listings, including who makes them and what they cost, because both move.

Guides on pest control for a UK home: see what you may buy for rats, deal with black garden ants, stop clothes moths before damage spreads, weigh what ultrasonic gadgets can do, repair a lawn after moles, stop mosquitoes breeding, compare guide prices, read a biocide label, and decide when a wasp nest or another warning sign needs a professional.

Common questions about pest control

Which rat bait may a householder buy?
If you are a householder, choose only rodenticide authorised and labelled for the general public, and follow that label. A professional-strength advert does not change the user line. Permanent baiting is not a household routine. None of the five rat poison listings includes a bait station.
Should I spray a trail of black garden ants?
Use one job. A bait station is what workers carry back to the nest. A residual spray on the same trail works against the bait. Very small pale ants in a permanently warm block of flats may be pharaoh ants, which need a professional.
When should I treat a wasp nest myself?
Leave a low-traffic nest if it poses no meaningful risk. A shop product fits a small, early, fully visible nest you can reach from stable ground. Do not seal an active entrance. A loft, a soffit, or a nest you cannot reach safely is a reason to call a controller.
Is powder or foam the wasp product?
Powder in the wasp killer set is for a hidden entrance you can reach, such as an air brick or a ground hole. Foam is for a papery nest you can see. A room spray is for a wasp in the room, not for a nest.
Will a mole stake clear the lawn?
The Royal Horticultural Society and the RSPCA start by lifting or flattening the heaps. An electronic stake may only move the mole to another part of the garden. The mole pages compare solar and battery stakes on amazon.co.uk. They are not a lab test.
Do ultrasonic pest repellers clear rats or mice?
The guide on this hub says the available evidence does not show reliable, lasting control of rats, mice or insects. The Advertising Standards Authority has yet to accept an efficacy claim for this class, and a GOV.UK code says practical ultrasonic use against rodents has generally been disappointing.
What should I check on a biocide label?
Who may use the product, the active substance, where and how it may be applied, and the precautions. The amazon.co.uk title is not the label. If the advert and the pack conflict, follow the pack.
Is an ultrasonic fogger an insect killer?
The twelve ultrasonic foggers here are water-mist makers, filed mostly as pond foggers. None shows an HSE number. If you need an insecticide, that is a different product with its own label.
