How to install a cat scarer

Updated: October 2026

The stake is in the lawn, a light flashed, and the cat still used the bed at dawn. That first night usually fails because of aim, shade, or a flat battery, not because every box is dead on arrival. This page is how to install a cat scarer you already own: charge it, point the sensor at the gap the animal uses, and keep a hose jet out of a frost. It does not rank models. The [main comparison](/hub/pest-control/animal-repeller) is the table Products Compared scored from amazon.co.uk listings on 19 October 2026. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission.

Charge it before the first night

A solar panel on a north-facing fence has not stored a night of bursts. PestBye's setup notes, for that brand, say to charge a solar unit for about four hours before you rely on it. Those times are seller instructions, not a trial of every ASIN here. If your listing has no panel, do not borrow a charge time from a brand that does. Battery units need cells before they need a stake. PestBye's ultrasonic pair takes four AA cells in each unit, and the cells are not in the box. Sensitivity turned almost fully down barely fires, which looks like a fault. A blue light on that model means it did trigger, so walk the gap at dusk rather than waiting for a cat. Famisym includes a USB lead for a grey November week. RUTIDA's bullets do not, so do not assume a cable is in that pack.

Point the sensor at the gap, not the back door

The Royal Horticultural Society says the speaker should face the open approach. In a terrace garden that is the gap under the fence, not the patio door. A sensor on the bin path fires for every person who takes the rubbish out. PestBye reviews describe branches that tripped the unit all night. Walk the animal's line at dusk. If it fires on the gap and stays quiet at the back door, the aim is right. Do not hammer the head. Push the spike in, then fit the head, which is PestBye's warning. If wind sets it off, lower the sensitivity one step, and if that bottom stop almost switches the unit off, move the stake. Your dog will trigger the same beam, so keep the sensor off a gap the dog must use.

Hose jets and lawn stakes

A water jet and a lawn stake are different installs. The jet needs an outdoor tap, a hose to the bed, and a joint that does not weep. PestBye's Jet Spray claims about 10 metres, 120 degrees and a burst of about five seconds. Reviewers report leaks and spray aimed the wrong way, so walk the line once before you leave it overnight. The RSPCA says to aim water at the animal's route. Bring the jet in before freezing weather. No frost date is printed in the saved file, so late autumn is a rule of thumb: disconnect, drain the head and the hose, and store it indoors. Famisym reviews include a stem that pulled apart and stayed in the ground, so soften the hole with a dibber rather than forcing the electronics. One scarer covers one gap. A second entrance needs a second aim.

Two weeks, then move it

Seller sheets often tell you to wait. Lodi's Racan manual, a seller instruction rather than a trial, talks about a first full charge and then about 10–15 days, and about changing the mode so animals do not settle. Keep that window for a unit that does fire. It is not a reason to leave a silent box in the bed. If nothing triggers when you walk the beam, with cells fitted and the sensitivity off the bottom stop, treat it as faulty. A cracked arrival, or a jet that leaks on the first connection, is a return. When it fires and the animal still comes, move the head to the other end of the gap, or change the mode if the listing has one. Habituation is in the large PestBye ultrasonic file: some cats ignored the sound after weeks. An occupied fox earth, bats, or suspected poison is the point to stop and use a licensed controller or the proper authority.

Common questions

How long should I charge a solar unit first?
Use the sheet in your box. PestBye's notes, for that brand, say about four hours before you rely on a solar unit. The STV Mega-Sonic sheet is a different example and allows sun or USB. Those figures are seller instructions, not a test of every listing here. Famisym and POFACT include USB. RUTIDA's bullets do not.
How high off the ground?
There is no single height for this set. The STV Mega-Sonic UK sheet suggests about 30–40 cm, a clear lens, about 110 degrees and about 8 metres, and that applies to that manual only. Do not copy it onto PestBye or YUCEN. Keep the lens clear of grass and do not hammer the head. Seat the spike first, then fit the unit.
What if the wind sets it off?
A branch in the beam is what drained PestBye batteries in reviews. Lower the sensitivity one step. On those ultrasonic units the bottom stop barely fires, so if that step kills it, move the stake. A jet that soaks the path in a breeze is aimed too wide. Narrow it onto the bed and walk the line again before you leave it out.
How long before I decide it has failed?
If a charged unit never triggers when you walk the gap, treat it as faulty or switched too low. If it fires and the visits continue, give a working install up to about two weeks, in the range of seller notes such as Lodi's Racan sheet, then move it or change mode. A cracked arrival or a jet that leaks immediately is a return, not another fortnight of aiming.
Will it affect my own dog?
A sensor fires on any warm body in the beam, including your dog. If the dog uses the back door, do not aim the unit there. A jet will soak the dog on the same line. Site it on the neighbour's gap, and switch it off when you garden that side. The cat page covers the same limit when the pet in the beam is your own cat.
