Pigeon scarer buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

Droppings on the patio, or seedlings with the tops nipped, usually send you to the same amazon.co.uk search. The results mix plastic owls, a roll of tape, hanging spirals and windmills, and a high star line can sit on a box that never says how many birds are inside. This pigeon scarer buying guide matches the device to the surface before you sort by stars. Shelf prices are from amazon.co.uk on 19 October 2026, about £4.99 to about £15.99. Links are affiliate links. Peter F. set out twelve listings for this guide and did not run a bird trial. The [pigeon scare comparison](/hub/pest-control/pigeon-scare) holds the rows. What you are actually buying

Four shapes share this shelf, and they are not substitutes. A predator decoy is a plastic owl, hawk or heron. Reflective tape is one roll you cut and tie. Spiral rods are short hanging reflectors, eight or ten pieces, around 30 cm. Pinwheels are larger spinning plastics in five-packs. None of the twelve is a spike, a net, a gel or an ultrasonic box. Opening reviews on The Big Cheese STV965, at about £12.99, say you spin the head with a finger. Tape and pinwheels only move in breeze and daylight. Defra’s 2021 annex treats reflectors as useless before sunrise. KOKMEYA’s tape is 262 feet at about £5.69, model CD-FT, 3.9 from 1,112 reviews.

Open ground or a perch

Name the surface before the product. Seed, a new lawn or a patio you can walk around can take a scarer you will move. A railing, a parapet or a shed lip is a perch. The British Pest Control Association says scaring rarely lasts and that food and proofing come first. A pinwheel does not replace spikes, taut wires or netting. Wood pigeons and feral pigeons are both protected in England, Scotland and Wales. A wood pigeon on brassicas is an open-ground delay. A feral pigeon on a rail is a ledge. If the feet are on one rail, neither an owl nor a flash is the lasting fix. That case is on stop pigeons on a balcony.

Price, stars, and the bad catalogue lines

The shelf on 19 October 2026 runs from about £4.99 to about £15.99. A lower price does not win on a tiny file. Adofous is ten 30 cm rods at about £4.99 with 4.0 from four reviews. KOKMEYA is about £5.69 with 3.9 from 1,112. Read stars with the count. The Big Cheese is 3.5 from 3,903, and the technical table says the power source is ac. The description is a plastic owl with no cable. The same table prints 132.38 g and 0.55 kg. No row prints an IP rating. SDZHDMO’s eight rods at about £5.99, 3.6 from 585 reviews, mention elastic that failed. Named rows are on best fake owl pigeon deterrent.

What the law allows you to do with a scarer

Scaring with these visual devices does not need a licence. Killing a wild bird, or damaging a nest in use or its eggs, does. That split is section 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Natural England’s WML-GU01 lists visual deterrents among steps that do not need a licence. In England, from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2026, GL41 covers public health and lists feral pigeon. Wood pigeon is not on that table. GL42 covers serious damage and lists both species for crops. Scotland uses NatureScot GL03/2026 for feral pigeon and public health, and GL02/2026 adds wood pigeon for serious damage. Wales uses NRW General Licence 002 (WCA/GEN/002/2026) for feral pigeon and public health. Northern Ireland sits under the Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order 1985. This page does not quote a DAERA licence. If a nest is in use, stop.

Common questions

Owl, tape, rods, or a windmill?
Buy tape or rods for a flash in sun and wind, a windmill to stake in a border, and an owl only if you will ballast and move it. If the birds stand on one rail, none of the four is the lasting answer.
Does a higher star rating mean fewer pigeons?
No. Adofous is 4.0 from four reviews. KOKMEYA is 3.9 from 1,112. The Big Cheese is 3.5 from 3,903. The Advertising Standards Authority does not treat testimonials as proof that a pest product clears birds.
Is scaring pigeons legal without a licence?
Putting up a visual scarer does not need a licence. WML-GU01 names visual deterrents among those steps. You need a licence to kill a wild bird or to damage a nest in use. England’s GL41 and GL42 run to 31 December 2026, and the conditions have to match.
Are wood pigeons and feral pigeons the same purchase?
Both are protected, and they are not the same job. A wood pigeon on crops is the open-ground case under England’s GL42. A feral pigeon on a building ledge is closer to GL41, and wood pigeon is not on that table.
What if the birds stand on a rail, not on the lawn?
A scarer on the lawn does not remove a perch. Tape can hang only as a hold. Spikes, wires or properly fitted netting are the class that changes a rail. Do not block a nest that is in use.
Why is there no ultrasonic pigeon scarer here?
None of these twelve listings is an ultrasonic box. Natural Resources Wales does not treat ultrasonics as effective against birds. If a nearby listing promises a silent electronic fix, it is a different product, not a missing line in this comparison.
What should I ignore on the Big Cheese listing?
Ignore the power line that says ac. The product is a plastic owl with no cable. The table prints 132.38 g and 0.55 kg. Use model STV965, about £12.99, and 3.5 from 3,903 reviews.
