Slug pellets comparison 2026

The best Slug pellets, compared.

Top pick: FERRIS Slug & Snail Killer Pellets 800 g Best value: Pestshield 4 × Slug & Snail Killer 300 g – About £0.91 per 100 g of the claimed 4 × 300 g fill at about £10.93, with 4.3 from 586 reviews. Half-full reviews limit that figure. Updated October 2026.

Slug pellets are a ferric phosphate bait you scatter on moist soil so slugs and snails stop feeding. UK gardeners use them on hostas, seedlings, lettuce and allotment beds. They are not a wool or seaweed barrier, and they are not nematodes you water into the soil. You recognise a suitable tub by a named active substance, a printed gram rate, and a pack that arrives closed. Metaldehyde products became illegal to sell and use in Great Britain from 1 April 2022, so an old tub belongs with local-authority waste. Ferric phosphate is the remaining amateur active substance. It often carries an organic-growing claim, and it usually leaves no corpses on the path. It is still a pesticide. The label rate binds you. Dogs can get stomach upset if they eat enough. Wildlife guidance, including from the RHS, is against pellets, including ones sold for organic growing. How to read the active substance and the skip rules is in the [slug pellets buying guide](/hub/pest-control/slug-pellets/sub/slug-pellets-buying-guide).

The best Slug pellets in detail

FERRIS Slug & Snail Killer Pellets 800 g

Rank 1

FERRIS Slug & Snail Killer Pellets 800 g

∼£12

Our view

The FERRIS 800 g tub is about £11.99 and shows 4.5 from 1,217 reviews, a higher star line than Provanto, but that count is shared with the two-pack. The bullets name ferric phosphate and also a nematode infusion, and nothing else on the listing shows a watered-in nematode pack, so that second claim is a listing conflict. Scatter is given as 5 g per square metre on bare ground, flower beds, vegetable patches and greenhouses. Organic-gardening wording appears without a named certifier, and rain resistance is not stated. The package line is 870 g against an 800 g title, which is a mismatch to check on the tub you receive. At about £1.50 per 100 g of the title fill it is dearer than Sluggo and Provanto without a larger independent review sample. Blue dye helps you see a scatter. It does not make the nematode sentence a biological control.

Pros

  • 5 g per square metre on the bullets, including greenhouses
  • 4.5 from 1,217 reviews
  • Ferric phosphate named beside the blue-dye claim
  • Edible and non-edible crops listed

Cons

  • Nematode infusion claimed on a dry pellet, with no watered-in pack on the listing
  • Review count shared with the two-pack
  • About £1.50 per 100 g, dearer than the larger samples
  • Package line 870 g against an 800 g title, and no rain claim

Best for: You want a stated 5 g rate and a greenhouse line, and you will ignore the nematode bullet.

Less suitable: You want nematodes, a certifier named on the page, or a star line that is not shared with another ASIN.

Common questions

Do these pellets contain nematodes?

The bullets say both ferric phosphate and a nematode infusion. Nothing else on the listing shows a watered-in nematode pack. Treat the nematode line as a listing conflict.

Can you use them in a greenhouse?

The listing says bare ground, flower beds, vegetable patches and greenhouses, at 5 g per square metre.

Are the 1,217 reviews only for this tub?

No. The same star line and opening review titles appear on the two-pack ASIN B0DTTRF4VG.

FERRIS Slug & Snail Killer Pellets 800 g, 2 pack

Rank 2

FERRIS Slug & Snail Killer Pellets 800 g, 2 pack

∼£19

Our view

This is the FERRIS two-pack at about £18.99, the dearest row in the basket, with a unit count of 2 and an item weight of 1.76 kg while the title still says 800 g. It carries the same 4.5 from 1,217 reviews as the single tub, so you are not paying for a second test. The bullets repeat ferric phosphate, the nematode infusion and 5 g per square metre for beds and greenhouses. At about £1.19 per 100 g of two 800 g fills it is cheaper per gram than the single FERRIS tub and still dearer than Provanto or a full Pestshield multipack. The nematode sentence is still unverified dry bait, not a substitute for a product you water into the soil. Rain resistance is not stated. Buy both tubs only if you already accept that conflict and you will use the fill. A higher star does not outrank the larger Provanto sample.

Pros

  • Two tubs, item weight 1.76 kg, at a lower price per gram than the FERRIS single
  • Same 5 g per square metre and greenhouse wording as the single
  • 4.5 star line on the shared pool

Cons

  • About £18.99 is the dearest pack here
  • Reviews are shared with the single tub
  • Nematode claim is still a listing conflict
  • Title says 800 g on a two-pack

Best for: You have already decided the FERRIS single is acceptable and you want a spare tub in the same order.

Less suitable: You are paying the premium because 4.5 looks stronger than 4.4, or you think the pack contains nematodes.

Common questions

What is in the pack?

Where does the listing say to use it?

Bare ground, flower beds, vegetable patches and greenhouses, at 5 g per square metre.

Provanto Slug & Snail Killer Max 800 g

Rank 3

Provanto Slug & Snail Killer Max 800 g

Our view

The Provanto 800 g tub is ferric phosphate bait at about £7.32 in the 19 October 2026 amazon.co.uk scrape, with an OF&G organic-growing claim and a rain-resistant line for vegetables, flowers and ornamentals. Across 6,699 reviews the line is 4.4, shared with the two-pack, so that figure is one pool rather than two tests, and it is still the largest sample in this set. Reviewers describe plant damage stopping without bodies left on the path, which is what this bait is supposed to do. The bullets do not print a gram rate. A listing coverage claim of up to 210 square metres from 800 g works out at about 3.8 g per square metre, and that arithmetic is not Sluggo’s 5 g instruction. A 21 October 2026 check found no featured offer, so about £7.32 may not be the price you can check out. Reviews still mention watching dogs around the blue pellets, and a pet-friendly bullet is a claim, not a clearance from a poison service. It is the top pick here because of the review volume and a named active substance in one closable tub, not because it is a harmless product.

Pros

  • Ferric phosphate named, with an OF&G claim on the listing
  • 4.4 from 6,699 amazon.co.uk reviews, the largest pool here
  • Single 800 g tub at about £7.32 in the 19 October 2026 scrape
  • Reviewers report feeding damage stopping without corpses on the path

Cons

  • No gram rate on the Amazon bullets
  • The 6,699 reviews are shared with the two-pack
  • No featured offer on a 21 October 2026 check
  • Pet-friendly wording is a listing claim, and reviews still mention dogs

Best for: You want one closable ferric phosphate tub with a large UK review sample and you will read the carton for the gram rate.

Less suitable: You need 5 g per square metre printed on the Amazon bullets, a price you can check out today, or a product a poison line has cleared for dogs.

Common questions

Can you use these pellets on vegetables?

The listing says vegetables, flowers and ornamental plants, and it claims OF&G registration when used as directed.

Does the listing say they are safe around dogs?

The bullets say safe around dogs, pets and wildlife when applied as directed. That is the listing claim. Reviews still mention watching dogs around the pellets.

Will you see dead slugs the next morning?

Reviews on this listing describe plant damage stopping without bodies left on the surface.

Provanto Slug & Snail Killer Max, pack of 2

Rank 4

Provanto Slug & Snail Killer Max, pack of 2

∼£15

Our view

This Provanto listing is the pack of two at about £14.64, with an item weight of 1.6 kg and the same model number, 86601082, as the 800 g tub. The title still says 800 g, and the bullets say the text applies to each unit, so you are buying two fills of the same bait rather than a stronger formula. The star line is the same 4.4 from 6,699 reviews, which means the two-pack does not add a second body of evidence. At about £0.92 per 100 g of the listed 1.6 kg it matches the single tub in this scrape, so the extra pack is storage, not a discount. This listing adds a rainfast claim of up to 10 days and names flowers, fruits, herbs and vegetables. That day-count is a listing claim, not a measurement after a British downpour. You still do not get a printed gram rate, and about £14.64 only helps if you will use both tubs before a lid is left off in a damp shed.

Pros

  • Two fills listed at 1.6 kg for about £14.64
  • Same about £0.92 per 100 g as the single tub in this scrape
  • Rainfast claim of up to 10 days on this listing
  • OF&G claim carried over with the shared listing text

Cons

  • Stars and review count are the single tub’s pool, not a second test
  • Title still says 800 g on a pack of two
  • No printed gram rate
  • Not cheaper per gram than buying one tub

Best for: You already want Provanto and you would rather keep a second unopened tub than reorder mid-season.

Less suitable: You are hoping the two-pack is a discount, or you want reviews that apply only to this multipack.

Common questions

Is this two tubs or one 800 g tub?

The size field says pack of 2 and the item weight is 1.6 kg. The title still says 800 g, and the bullets say the text applies to each unit.

How long does this listing say the pellets resist rain?

This listing says rainfast for up to 10 days. That is a listing claim, not a measured result.

Are the 6,699 reviews only for this pack?

No. The star line and the opening review titles match the 800 g ASIN B09RQQT8GY.

Neudorff Sluggo Slug & Snail Killer 800 g

Rank 5

Neudorff Sluggo Slug & Snail Killer 800 g

Our view

Neudorff Sluggo is an 800 g tub of blue hydrated ferric phosphate pellets at about £7.99, with 4.3 from 4,830 amazon.co.uk reviews on this ASIN rather than a shared pool. The bullets tell you to scatter 5 g per square metre in the late evening or early morning, and they say there is no wait until harvest on vegetables and fruit. The title also says the tub is for 100 square metres, which does not match 5 g per square metre on 800 g, because that rate covers 160 square metres, so the gram line is the one to follow. The listing says you should not expect slime traces or visible dead slugs. One review reports mould and dead pot plants after heavy rain. That is a single report, not a new dose. Organic-systems wording is on the bullets without a named certifier, unlike Provanto’s OF&G line. At about £1 per 100 g it costs a little more than the top pick, and it is the tub to open when you want 5 g per square metre written on the Amazon page.

Pros

  • 5 g per square metre printed on the bullets, with evening or morning timing
  • 4.3 from 4,830 reviews on this ASIN
  • Hydrated ferric phosphate named, blue pellets
  • Listing says no harvest wait on vegetables and fruit

Cons

  • Title coverage of 100 m² conflicts with 5 g per square metre on 800 g
  • Organic-systems claim does not name a certifier
  • A review reports mould and dead pot plants after heavy rain
  • About £1 per 100 g, slightly above Provanto in this scrape

Best for: You want the gram rate on the listing before you scatter, on vegetables or fruit, and you will ignore the 100 square metre title line.

Less suitable: You want the cheapest 100 g, an OF&G name on the bullets, or a bait you can judge by corpses the next morning.

Common questions

How much does the listing tell you to scatter?

The bullets say 5 g per square metre in the late evening or early morning. The title also says for 100 square metres, which does not match 5 g per square metre on 800 g.

Can you eat the crop afterwards?

The listing says there is no wait until harvest on edible and non-edible plants, and to use it on vegetables and fruit.

Does the listing expect visible dead slugs?

The bullets say there are no slime traces and no visible dead slugs.

Pestshield 4 × Slug & Snail Killer 300 g

Rank 6

Pestshield 4 × Slug & Snail Killer 300 g

∼£11

Our view

Pestshield sells four 300 g tubs of mini blue ferric phosphate pellets at about £10.93, with 4.3 from 586 reviews on this ASIN. On the claimed 1.2 kg that is about £0.91 per 100 g, the lowest figure in the set, which is why it is the best value here. The item-weight field says 1.44 kg, and the bullets do not print a gram rate or name edible crops. Organic wording appears without a certifier. More than one review says the tubs arrived about half empty, with the pellets several centimetres below the lid, so the price per 100 g only holds if the tubs are actually full. In the scrape the rank sat at 83 in Slug & Snail Control, far below Provanto. Four small tubs can suit a shed where you want a spare lid. They are a poor bargain if you count 1.2 kg and find half of it missing.

Pros

  • About £0.91 per 100 g of the claimed 4 × 300 g fill
  • Ferric phosphate named, mini blue pellets
  • 4.3 from 586 reviews on this ASIN
  • Four tubs if you want a spare closed pot

Cons

  • Reviews report tubs about half empty
  • No gram rate and no edible-crop line on the listing
  • Item weight 1.44 kg does not match a simple 1.2 kg sum
  • Organic wording does not name a certifier

Best for: You want the lowest price per claimed 100 g and you will check that each tub is full before you rely on the weight.

Less suitable: Half-empty packs are the complaint you most want to avoid, or you need a printed scatter rate.

Common questions

How many tubs are in the pack?

The title says 4 × 300 g. The item weight is 1.44 kg. Reviews say the four tubs arrived, and some looked about half full.

The bullets say ferric phosphate and mini blue pellets.

Did reviewers find the tubs full?

Neudorff Sluggo Ultra+ Pellets 650 g

Rank 7

Neudorff Sluggo Ultra+ Pellets 650 g

Our view

Neudorff Sluggo Ultra+ is a 650 g bottle at about £8.50 with 4.3 from 167 reviews, a much smaller sample than the Sluggo 800 g tub. The Amazon listing does not name an active substance or a gram rate, the only bullet on the listing is Natural, and the organic word sits on the title. Neudorff’s own Ultra+ page states 20 g/kg and 2.5 g per square metre, a different instruction from Sluggo’s 5 g, and that rate is not printed on this ASIN. Do not copy the 800 g tub’s dose onto this bottle. Reviewers report birds, especially crows, eating the pellets unless the crop is covered, and one buyer hoped they were friendly to hedgehogs. At about £1.31 per 100 g of the 650 g fill it looks dear until you use the manufacturer’s lower rate, which you cannot read on the page you are buying from. The listed weight is 671 g, and this is a bottle for someone who will read the carton in the hand.

Pros

  • 650 g Neudorff bottle at about £8.50
  • 4.3 from 167 reviews
  • Manufacturer page, not this listing, states a lower 2.5 g per square metre rate

Cons

  • Amazon listing does not name the active substance or the gram rate
  • Only bullet on the listing is Natural
  • Reviews say birds, including crows, eat the pellets
  • About £1.31 per 100 g before you apply a rate that is not on the listing

Best for: You already know Ultra+ from the carton and you will dose from that label, not from the Sluggo 800 g bullets.

Less suitable: You need the active substance and the gram rate on the Amazon page, or birds are clearing bait from an open bed.

Common questions

Growing Success Advanced Slug Killer 575 g

Rank 8

Growing Success Advanced Slug Killer 575 g

Our view

Growing Success Advanced is 575 g, including 15% extra, at about £7.49, with ferric phosphate named, a claim of certification for organic use that does not name the certifier, and an amazon.co.uk line of 4.2 from 122 reviews. The bullets cover plants, seedlings and crops, say crops can be eaten shortly after application, and say the bait stays effective after rain, watering and sunlight. The manufacturer page states 5 g per square metre, and that figure is not on this Amazon listing. Which? has reported results from ferric phosphate and named this product in that account. That is their trial, not a laboratory test for this page, and it does not place this tub above the larger review samples. The complaints that dominate the reviews are lids off in transit, crushed cardboard and pellets spilled into the delivery bag, and the title says granules while the bullets say pellets. At about £1.30 per 100 g it is an inexpensive named bait when the tub arrives closed.

Pros

  • Ferric phosphate named, 575 g with 15% extra at about £7.49
  • Listing covers seedlings and crops, with a short-wait claim
  • Which? has named this product in its ferric phosphate account
  • Rain, watering and sunlight claim on the bullets

Cons

  • 4.2 from 122 reviews, a smaller sample than Provanto or Sluggo
  • Lids, crushed cardboard and spills dominate the complaints
  • 5 g per square metre is on the manufacturer page, not on this Amazon listing
  • Title says granules and bullets say pellets

Best for: You want a small named ferric phosphate pack for seedlings and you will reject a tub that arrives open.

Less suitable: You are ordering for the whole allotment and a spilled bag would waste the dose, or you need the gram rate on the listing.

JKG Slug & Snail Killer Powder 800 g

Rank 9

JKG Slug & Snail Killer Powder 800 g

Our view

JKG’s 800 g listing is about £8.95 with 3.9 from 29 reviews and only eight review texts on the listing, the thinnest and lowest star line here. Amazon’s item form is powder, the bullets also say rain-resistant pellets, and the listing does not state an active substance, so this is not a confirmed ferric phosphate bait. A coverage line of up to 100 square metres has no gram rate beside it, and the organic-based wording appears without a certifier. One review says the advert suggested indoor use while the pack said to keep it away from children and pets, yet the bullets describe outdoor beds and paths. The package weight is 870 g against an 800 g title, and the dimensions match the FERRIS single’s box size, which is another reason to read the label before you scatter anything. At about £1.12 per 100 g the price is not the problem. The missing active substance is. Skip it when you need a named ferric phosphate pellet.

Pros

  • About £8.95 for a stated 800 g fill
  • Outdoor beds and a rain-resistant line on the bullets
  • Coverage claim of up to 100 square metres, if you can match it to a label

Cons

  • Active substance not stated
  • Item form powder, while bullets say pellets
  • 3.9 from 29 reviews, eight texts on the listing
  • Indoor wording in a review conflicts with the keep-away line on the pack

Best for: You already hold the physical pack and the label names ferric phosphate at a rate you can follow.

Less suitable: You are choosing from the Amazon page alone and need a named active substance before you buy.

Common questions

What is the active substance?

The listing does not state one. Amazon’s item form is powder, while the bullets say rain-resistant pellets.

How we compared

Nine amazon.co.uk slug and snail listings were compared from a 19 October 2026 scrape. The number on each card is the star rating times 20, so 4.5 is 90 and 4.4 is 88. Shared review pools are counted once when a badge is chosen. They are not a second penalty inside that number. There is no laboratory trial. The weights below are how the top pick and the best value were chosen when a higher star line was set aside. The top pick is the Provanto 800 g tub: ferric phosphate named, one tub, 4.4 from 6,699 reviews. FERRIS scores 90 and does not take that badge, because the pool is shared, the sample is smaller, and a nematode bullet conflicts with dry bait. Best value is Pestshield 4 × 300 g at about £10.93, about £0.91 per 100 g of the claimed fill, with 4.3 from 586 reviews. Half-full reviews limit that badge. It is not a safety ranking. A 21 October 2026 check found no featured offer on Provanto 800 g.

1

Review sample

30%

The card number is the amazon.co.uk star rating times 20. A shared pool, such as Provanto’s 6,699 or FERRIS’s 1,217, counts once when the badge is chosen. A larger independent sample outranks a higher star on a smaller shared pool.

2

Named active substance

25%

Expect ferric phosphate on the listing. If the page will not name the active, another brand’s safety line is not borrowed. A nematode sentence on dry pellets is a listing conflict, not a second active.

3

Gram rate on the listing

20%

A printed gram rate for that tub outranks a coverage slogan. Sluggo prints 5 g per square metre. Ultra+ is a different rate, and it is not on the Amazon listing. Rates are not swapped between brands.

4

Listing consistency

15%

Points come off for a title that disagrees with the pack count, a powder item form beside a pellet bullet, a missing certifier on an organic line, and reviews that describe half-empty tubs or lids off in transit.

5

Price per 100 g

10%

Best value is the lowest price per 100 g of the claimed fill, not the cheapest tub and not a safety score. The figure only holds if the tubs arrive full.

Start with the active substance, then the gram rate, then whether the tub arrives closed. Slug pellets here are ferric phosphate bait, not a barrier and not a nematode. Shelf prices in the 19 October 2026 scrape run from about £7.32 to about £18.99. The top pick is a single Provanto tub. The best value is the Pestshield multipack if the tubs are full. Nothing on this page is a laboratory trial.

What are slug pellets?

Slug pellets in this comparison are ferric phosphate bait you scatter on moist soil so slugs and snails stop feeding. UK gardeners use them on hostas, seedlings, lettuce and allotment beds. They are not a wool or seaweed barrier, and they are not nematodes you water into the soil. Metaldehyde products became illegal to sell and use in Great Britain from 1 April 2022, after supply ended on 31 March 2021 and use was allowed until 31 March 2022.

Best for

  • Hostas, seedlings and lettuce where you will follow a label rate
  • A single closable tub when you want a large UK review sample
  • A multipack only after you have checked the tubs are full

Not ideal for

  • Anyone who will not use a pesticide
  • A garden where hedgehogs or dogs may eat the bait
  • Judging success by corpses on the path the next morning

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

Buying a barrier because the title says pellets

Wool, seaweed and other barriers are a different product. A slug pellet in this set is ferric phosphate bait you scatter. Nematodes are watered in. A dry pellet that claims a nematode infusion is a listing conflict.

  2. 2

Judging the bait by missing corpses

Ferric phosphate usually leaves no bodies on the path. Sluggo’s bullets say there are no slime traces and no visible dead slugs. Judge new leaf damage after several days, not a clear path the next morning.

  3. 3

    Swapping the gram rate

Sluggo’s bullets say 5 g per square metre. Ultra+ is a lower rate on the manufacturer page, and that rate is not on the Amazon listing. Do not use 5 g per square metre on Ultra+, and do not treat a coverage slogan as the dose.

What to weigh up

Active substance and gram rate

High

Expect ferric phosphate. If the listing will not name it, do not borrow another brand’s line. JKG is in that gap, and Amazon’s item form says powder. Sluggo’s bullets print 5 g per square metre. The title also says 100 square metres, which does not match 5 g per square metre on 800 g, because that rate covers 160 square metres, so the gram line is the one to follow.

Pack, wildlife and price

High

Growing Success reviews centre on lids and crushed cardboard. Pestshield reviews mention half-empty tubs, so about £0.91 per 100 g only holds if the four tubs are full. A two-pack that shares the single tub’s reviews is not a second proof. Provanto’s 6,699 reviews are one pool with the two-pack. FERRIS’s 1,217 reviews are one pool with its two-pack. OF&G means an inputs claim. It does not cancel the label rate, and it does not answer the EDTA question Which? raises.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Patio and hostas

You want one closable tub and a straight answer on dogs. Provanto Slug & Snail Killer Max 800 g is about £7.32 in the 19 October 2026 scrape, with ferric phosphate named, an OF&G claim, and 4.4 from 6,699 reviews shared with the two-pack. The bullets do not print a gram rate, and a later check found no featured offer. A pet-friendly line is a listing claim. Skip it if you need 5 g per square metre on the Amazon page.

Allotment beds

You need a gram rate before you scatter, and a plan for birds. Neudorff Sluggo Slug & Snail Killer 800 g is about £7.99, with 5 g per square metre on the bullets and 4.3 from 4,830 reviews on this ASIN. The title’s 100 square metre line does not match that rate on 800 g. Ignore the title coverage and follow the gram line. Skip it if you want the cheapest 100 g.

A multipack, if the tubs are full

You are counting four tubs and you will check the fill before you rely on the weight. Pestshield 4 × 300 g is about £10.93, about £0.91 per 100 g of the claimed fill, with 4.3 from 586 reviews. More than one review says the tubs arrived about half empty. The bullets do not print a gram rate. Skip it if a short fill is the complaint you most want to avoid.

Common questions about Slug pellets

Which slug pellet is the top pick in 2026?
The top pick is Provanto Slug & Snail Killer Max 800 g, about £7.32 in the 19 October 2026 amazon.co.uk scrape. It names ferric phosphate, carries an OF&G claim, and shows 4.4 from 6,699 reviews shared with the two-pack, the largest sample here. The bullets do not print a gram rate. A 21 October 2026 check found no featured offer, so that price may not be the one you can check out. A pet-friendly bullet is a listing claim. This is not a laboratory test.
Which pack is the best value?
The best value is Pestshield, four 300 g tubs, at about £10.93. On the claimed fill that is about £0.91 per 100 g, the lowest figure in this set, with 4.3 from 586 reviews. More than one review says the tubs arrived about half empty, so the price per 100 g only holds if they are full. The bullets do not print a gram rate. The label is a price comparison, not a ranking of pet or hedgehog safety.
How much do slug pellets cost?
In the 19 October 2026 amazon.co.uk scrape, shelf prices run from about £7.32 to about £18.99. Single tubs of Provanto, Growing Success, Sluggo, Ultra+ and JKG sit at about £7.32 to £8.95. Pestshield’s four tubs are about £10.93, the FERRIS 800 g tub about £11.99, and the Provanto two-pack about £14.64. The FERRIS two-pack is about £18.99. Provanto 800 g had no featured offer on 21 October 2026, so treat the pounds as a snapshot.
What should I check before I buy slug pellets?
Check a named active substance, a printed gram rate for that tub, and a pack that arrives closed. Expect ferric phosphate. If the listing will not name the active, do not borrow another brand’s safety line. Do not copy a 5 g per square metre rate onto a product whose own label says 2.5 g. Scatter in the evening on moist bare soil and keep the bait off leaves. Judge new leaf damage after several days, not a pile of dead slugs.
Are slug pellets safe for dogs and hedgehogs?
No tub in this set is cleared as safe for dogs, cats, hedgehogs or children. VPIS says ferric phosphate can cause vomiting and diarrhoea if a pet eats enough. Animal PoisonLine is 01202 509000. Hedgehog Street advises against pellets if you want hedgehogs. An OF&G or organic line is an inputs claim, not a poison-service clearance. The RHS advises against pellets, including organic ones, because of effects on wildlife. Phone a vet or Animal PoisonLine if a pet has eaten bait.
Can I still use metaldehyde slug pellets?
In Great Britain there was no further metaldehyde supply from 31 March 2021. Use was allowed until 31 March 2022. Selling and using it became illegal on 1 April 2022. Ferric phosphate is the amateur active substance left in this comparison. Take an old metaldehyde tub to local-authority waste. Check Northern Ireland on the HSE register. Do not keep an unauthorised tub in the shed, and follow the label on any bait you still use.
Should I buy slug pellets or nematodes?
Ferric phosphate pellets are a bait you scatter on soil. Nematodes used against slugs are Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita, watered on when the soil is about 5 to 20°C. The RHS treats that as a poor tool against snails. A bullet that says dry pellets are infused with nematodes conflicts with a product you water in. If you will not use a pesticide, choose nematodes, traps or hand picking. The nematodes comparison is that other product.
Will I see dead slugs the next morning?
Usually no. Ferric phosphate is meant to stop feeding, and it often leaves no corpses on the path. Sluggo’s bullets say there are no slime traces and no visible dead slugs. Provanto reviewers describe plant damage stopping without bodies on the surface. Judge new leaves after several days. A clear path the next morning does not prove the bait failed, and it does not mean the bed is clear overnight.

Our verdict

The top pick is Provanto Slug & Snail Killer Max 800 g at about £7.32. Ferric phosphate is named, it is one tub, and the line is 4.4 from 6,699 reviews, the largest sample here, shared with the two-pack. FERRIS scores 90 because 4.5 times 20 is 90, and it does not take the badge: the pool is shared, the sample is smaller, and the bullets claim a nematode infusion the listing does not support. A 21 October 2026 check found no featured offer on the Provanto 800 g, so about £7.32 may not be the price you can check out. The best value is Pestshield 4 × 300 g at about £10.93, about £0.91 per 100 g of the claimed fill, with 4.3 from 586 reviews. Half-full reviews are the limit on that badge. It is not a safety ranking. None of these scores is a laboratory trial.
