Snail protection comparison 2026

The best Snail protection, compared.

Top pick: Titifeya 3 beer traps Best value: kanta copper slug tape, 20 mm – About £3.99 and 4.1 from 221 reviews, the lowest price here with a sample over 100. Length unstated. The badge is price plus sample, not proof the band stops slugs. Updated October 2026.

Peter F.Editor

Snail protection is what you buy to keep slugs and snails off seedlings, brassicas, strawberries, and pot plants in a wet UK garden. It is not one object. A thin bait scatter suits an open bed. A lipped collar only works while the plant still fits the ring. Tape or mesh belongs on a rim you can keep free of leaves. A trap only catches what reaches the bait. Judge fit by the job, the size, and the label. Collars for this job are about 15 to 26 cm, so a mature hosta will not fit. Fit the ring before the plant is wide. A felt disc is a flat mat, not a lipped wall. Tape needs a clean, dry rim, and a collar needs soil you can firm. In Great Britain, outdoor metaldehyde has been illegal to sell and use since 1 April 2022. Ferric phosphate is the pellet active public advice still discusses. Scatter thinly and store the pack away from children and dogs. How the methods differ is in the [snail protection buying guide](/hub/pest-control/snail-protection/sub/snail-protection-buying-guide).

The best Snail protection in detail

Titifeya 3 beer traps

Rank 1

Titifeya 3 beer traps

Our view

The Titifeya pack is three plastic beer traps at £8.99 and 160 g, and the instructions say you dig a hole, set the box in, pour in beer and fit the lid. Across 2 amazon.co.uk reviews the line is 5.0, and the saved listing has no review text, so the score is 63 and two stars with nothing to quote do not take the top pick. The file does not say beer is supplied. The bullets name gardens, orchards and vegetable patches, colour Green2, style Classic. A trap only catches what comes to the beer, and an unemptied box is a wet container rather than a control method. At £8.99 for three boxes the shelf price is low, and that price does not include the bait the instructions assume. It is a small set of boxes if you will buy the beer and empty them, and it is the wrong product if you wanted a barrier that stays on a pot with no daily check.

Pros

  • Three plastic boxes at about £8.99
  • Fit is described: dig, set the box, add beer, fit the lid
  • 5.0 from 2 amazon.co.uk reviews

Cons

  • No review text to quote
  • Beer is not stated as included
  • Only catches slugs and snails that enter the beer
  • Needs emptying or it is a wet box

Best for: You want three sink-in traps for a vegetable bed and you will supply the beer and empty them in the morning.

Less suitable: You need review text, a barrier for a pot, or a method that works without a daily check.

Common questions

Does the pack include beer?

The instructions say to pour beer in. The file does not say beer is supplied. You dig a hole, set the box in, add beer, and fit the lid.

How many traps, and what are they made of?

Three plastic boxes. The file says 160 g, colour Green2, style Classic. The price is about £8.99.

What do the two reviews say?

The star line is 5.0 from 2. The saved listing has no review text, so there is nothing to quote.

Mdlooin 25 felt discs

Rank 2

Mdlooin 25 felt discs

Our view

The Mdlooin pack is 25 black felt discs at £4.99, each described as 15 cm across with a 2 cm centre hole and a slit, and it is a mulch mat rather than a lipped collar. Across 1 amazon.co.uk review the line is 5.0, and that review says the discs saved brassicas from slugs and snails and names no fault. The technical line says 1 x 1 x 1 cm, which conflicts with the 15 cm bullet, so the score is 55 and a single five-star line does not take the top pick. The listing also claims the discs against root flies and nematodes, a wider job than a slug barrier and one that single review does not show. At 80 g for 25 discs the pack is light and cheap per piece. You slit it around a stem, and a slug can still cross a flat felt surface. It is the wrong product if you wanted the downward lip on the plastic collars.

Pros

  • 25 discs at about £4.99
  • 15 cm felt with a slit and a 2 cm hole, for a stem rather than a pot rim
  • One UK review reports brassicas saved from slugs and snails

Cons

  • Only 1 review, with no fault named
  • Technical line says 1 x 1 x 1 cm against a 15 cm bullet
  • Flat felt, not a lipped collar
  • Root-fly and nematode claims are not shown in the review

Best for: You want cheap felt mats for brassica stems and you will check that a 15 cm disc is what arrives.

Less suitable: You wanted a lipped plastic wall, a review sample, or a barrier for a pot.

Common questions

Is this a lipped slug collar?

No. It is a black felt disc, 15 cm across, with a 2 cm hole and a slit. The technical line also says 1 x 1 x 1 cm, which conflicts with the 15 cm bullet.

What does the review say?

There is one UK review. It says the collars work very well and saved brassicas from slugs and snails. It names no fault.

How many are in the pack?

25. The price in the file is about £4.99. The star line is 5.0 from 1 review.

HanYun 12 pack collars, 21 cm

Rank 3

HanYun 12 pack collars, 21 cm

∼£13

Our view

The HanYun pack is 12 PET collars at £12.99, and the bullets and the technical line both say 21 cm on each side and 12 cm high. Across 7 amazon.co.uk reviews the line is 4.9, a high star rating on a small sample, so the score is 77 and it does not take the top pick. Four UK reviews are in the file: one says slugs stopped eating the crops, and another describes the overhang as the block. A reviewer who had not used them yet is also in that set, so the 4.9 is not seven reports of a finished season. The listing tells you to set the collar over the plant, push it into the soil and firm the edge, and reviewers say that is harder once the plant is already wide. The 45 degree downward edge is a seller claim, not a trial result. At 630 g for the pack it is a seedling ring whose size at least agrees with itself, and it is the wrong object for a mature hosta clump.

Pros

  • Title and technical line both say 21 cm by 12 cm
  • 4.9 from 7 amazon.co.uk reviews, with crops left alone in one UK review
  • 12 open-top PET collars at about £12.99, 630 g
  • Push-in fit, no tool named on the listing

Cons

  • Only 7 reviews, and one buyer had not used them yet
  • Harder to fit once the plant is already wide
  • 45 degree lip is a seller claim, not a trial
  • 21 cm is too small for a mature hosta crown

Best for: You want a 12-pack of lipped collars for seedlings and the stated size matches on the title and the technical line.

Less suitable: You need a large review sample, a collar for a wide clump, or a pot-rim tape.

Common questions

How do you fit these collars?

The listing says to set the collar over the plant, push it into the soil, and firm the soil around the edge. No tools are named. Reviewers say this is harder once the plant is already wide.

What are they made of, and what size are they?

PET plastic. The bullets and the technical line both say 21 cm each side and 12 cm high. The pack is 12 collars at 630 g.

Do the reviews say they stop slugs?

Four UK reviews are in the file. One says slugs stopped eating the crops. Another describes the overhang as the block. One buyer had not used them yet.

Provanto Slug & Snail Killer Max 800 g

Rank 4

Provanto Slug & Snail Killer Max 800 g

Our view

The Provanto tub is 800 g of slug and snail pellets at £7.32, and across 6,699 amazon.co.uk reviews the line is 4.4, which is why the score is 86 and why it is the top pick in this set. The bullets say the pellets kill slugs and snails, that the product is OF&G registered for organic growing, and that it is pet and wildlife friendly when used as directed. The technical table does not print an active substance or a MAPP number, so that friendly line is not a dose a dog can eat, and reviewers who mention blue pellets, an iron smell and ferric phosphate are describing the tub rather than filling a missing specification. Across the first 50 UK reviews, damage often stops, including on hostas and vegetables. The same sample repeats mice eating the pellets, mould in a cold frame, and another scatter after heavy rain. A reviewer returned the tub because it was for outdoor use, and the bullets name borders, beds and vegetable patches. It is the only bait in this comparison, and it is the wrong buy if you want a barrier and no pesticide.

Pros

  • 4.4 from 6,699 amazon.co.uk reviews, the largest sample here
  • 800 g at about £7.32, rank 1 in Slug & Snail Control in the file
  • OF&G named on the bullets
  • UK reviews often report damage stopping on hostas and vegetables

Cons

  • Active substance and MAPP number are not in the technical table
  • Mice, cold-frame mould and rain repeats come up in the first 50 UK reviews
  • Outdoor use; one reviewer returned it for indoor use
  • Pet-friendly wording is not a clearance to heap pellets or let a dog eat them

Best for: You want the only pellet in this set for an outdoor bed or border and you will follow the label rate.

Less suitable: You refuse a pesticide, need the active printed on the amazon table, or want a collar or tape for one pot.

Common questions

Does the listing name the active substance?

No. The technical details do not print an active or a MAPP number. Reviewers describe blue pellets, an iron smell, and ferric phosphate. The bullets do say OF&G.

What do the reviews repeat?

Across the first 50 UK reviews, damage often stops, including on hostas and vegetables. Repeated complaints are mice eating the pellets, mould in a cold frame, and another scatter after heavy rain.

Can you use them indoors?

A reviewer returned the tub because it was for outdoor use. The bullets name borders, beds, and vegetable patches.

KAHEIGN 12 pack collars

Rank 5

KAHEIGN 12 pack collars

∼£13

Our view

The KAHEIGN pack is 12 PET collars at £12.99, the same shelf price as the HanYun 12-pack, with 4.4 from 32 amazon.co.uk reviews and a score of 67. The file does not agree on size: the title says 20 cm by 12 cm, the bullets say a 26 cm side and 12 cm height, and the technical line says 15 x 10 x 20 cm at 860 g. UK reviews mention cabbage seedlings and wallflowers left alone, and they also mention thick green plastic, one box of 11 instead of 12, and doubt about the lip. The listing says to cover the plant and press soil or stones around the collar, and it names no tool. The 45 degree edge is a claim. You can use it for a small plant only after you measure the ring that arrives, because three sizes in one file is not a measurement you can plant to. It is a poor match if you need the technical line and the title to say the same thing before you order.

Pros

  • 4.4 from 32 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • UK reviews cite cabbage seedlings and wallflowers left alone
  • 12 translucent green PET collars at about £12.99
  • Press soil or stones around the base, no tool named

Cons

  • Title, bullets and technical line print three different sizes
  • One buyer received 11 collars instead of 12
  • Doubt about the lip in the UK reviews
  • You cannot trust 20 cm, 26 cm or 15 cm until you measure

Best for: You want a reviewed 12-pack for seedlings and you will measure the collar before you rely on a printed side.

Less suitable: You need one agreed size on the listing, or a ring for a plant wider than a seedling.

UK reviews mention cabbage seedlings and wallflowers left alone, thick green plastic, one box of 11 instead of 12, and doubt about the lip.

kanta copper slug tape, 20 mm

Rank 6

kanta copper slug tape, 20 mm

Our view

The kanta tape is self-adhesive copper, 20 mm wide, at £3.99, with 4.1 from 221 amazon.co.uk reviews, and that price plus the sample is why it is the best value here, with a score of 71. The bullets do not state a length, and one reviewer writes that it was apparently 2 metres and covered about one pot. The listing says it is weather resistant and claims a mucus reaction. Many of the first 50 reviews say it peels, fails on some surfaces or tarnishes within a summer, and several describe slime trails over the tape or snails sitting on it. Other reviews report tomato pots and dahlias left alone, including one double layer. At 30 g and a pack size of 8 x 8 x 2 cm you are not buying a long roll with a printed metre count. It is a cheap band for one rim if you accept peel and crossing in the same review file, and it is a weak buy if you need a stated length before you start.

Pros

  • About £3.99, the lowest shelf price in the set, with 4.1 from 221 reviews
  • 20 mm self-adhesive copper for a pot rim
  • Some UK reviews report tomato pots and dahlias left alone
  • A double layer helped one tomato pot in the review sample

Cons

  • Length is not on the listing; one reviewer guessed about 2 metres
  • Peeling, failed surfaces and tarnish within a summer are common in the first 50 reviews
  • Slime trails and snails sitting on the tape are in the same file
  • Mucus-reaction wording is a listing claim

Best for: You want a cheap 20 mm band for one or two pots and you will clean the rim and accept a split review record.

Less suitable: You need a printed length for several troughs, or a band the reviews agree slugs do not cross.

Common questions

How long is the kanta tape?

Does it stay on pots in the rain?

The listing says it is weather resistant. Many of the first 50 reviews say it peels, fails on some surfaces, or tarnishes within a summer.

Do reviewers say slugs cross it?

Yes. Several reviews describe slime trails over the tape or snails sitting on it. Others report tomato pots and dahlias left alone, including one double layer.

Tiger Tape slug tape, 20 mm x 10 m

Rank 7

Tiger Tape slug tape, 20 mm x 10 m

Our view

The Tiger Tape title says copper barrier tape, 20 mm by 10 m, at £5.99, self-adhesive, for pots, planters, raised beds and staging, and it tells you to double the width for large slugs. Across 39 amazon.co.uk reviews the line is 4.0, and the review bodies describe waterproof decking joist tape, often 63 mm by 20 m. One short review says it did not work and does not say which product. Because that text is not about slug tape, the sample points are not counted and the score is 36. The technical line says 10 x 10 x 2 cm and 80 g, which does not describe a 63 mm decking roll either. You cannot treat 4.0 from 39 as a slug-control result. Buy it only if you have checked the live page and the photographs are the 20 mm band the title names, and skip it while the reviews still talk about decking.

Pros

  • Title states 20 mm by 10 m, a length the kanta listing omits
  • Shelf price about £5.99
  • Title names pots, planters, raised beds and staging

Cons

  • Review bodies mostly describe 63 mm decking joist tape, often 20 m
  • 4.0 from 39 is not a slug-control result
  • One short review says it did not work and does not name the product
  • Pack line of 10 x 10 x 2 cm does not confirm a 10 m slug roll

Best for: You have already checked the live photographs and they show the 20 mm slug band the title names.

Less suitable: You would be buying on the star line, or you need reviews that describe slugs rather than decking.

Common questions

What does the title say this tape is?

Copper barrier tape for slugs and snails, 20 mm by 10 m, self-adhesive, for pots and staging. The price in the file is about £5.99.

Can you use the reviews as slug-tape evidence?

No. The review bodies describe waterproof decking tape, often 63 mm by 20 m. One short review says it did not work and does not say which product.

What is the star line?

4.0 from 39. Because the text is about decking tape, that figure is not a slug-control result.

FACIACC copper mesh kit

Rank 8

FACIACC copper mesh kit

Our view

The FACIACC kit is copper mesh at £7.49, and the bullets say 12.7 cm by 6 m, double layer, with scissors and a filling tool. Across 28 amazon.co.uk reviews the line is 3.9, and the score is 65. One review says lupins in tubs were left alone on the first night, and another says slugs crawled over the mesh with no apparent resistance. A further review says the roll is 12 m, which is not the 6 m on the bullets, and the manufacturer line spells the brand FACCIAC. The rank in the file is Rodent Control. The bullets say glue or nails if you need to secure it, and there is no adhesive roll in the kit. It is a mesh you can cut for a planter edge if you accept a split record, and it is a poor choice if you need the reviews to agree that slugs stop at the copper.

Pros

  • Kit includes mesh, scissors and a filling tool at about £7.49
  • Bullets say 12.7 cm by 6 m, double layer
  • 3.9 from 28 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • One review reports lupins in tubs left alone on the first night

Cons

  • Another review says slugs crawled over the mesh
  • A review says 12 m, against 6 m on the bullets
  • No adhesive in the kit; glue or nails are extra
  • Ranked in Rodent Control, and the manufacturer line spells FACCIAC

Best for: You want mesh plus scissors for a planter edge and you can fix it with your own glue or nails.

Less suitable: You need a review file that agrees slugs stop, or a stated length you do not have to reconcile.

Did reviewers keep slugs off?

Mixed. Lupins in tubs were left alone on the first night in one review. Another says slugs crawled over the mesh with no apparent resistance.

How do you fix it?

Scissors are in the pack. The bullets say glue or nails if you need to secure it. There is no adhesive roll in the kit.

SuQurtom copper mesh, 10 m

Rank 9

SuQurtom copper mesh, 10 m

∼£10

Our view

The SuQurtom roll is copper mesh at £9.99, and the bullets say 10 m by 12.7 cm at 150 g, sold against slugs, snails and rodents. Across 9 amazon.co.uk reviews the line is 3.9, and the score is 60. Of the four review texts in the file, one says it works, one calls it good value for snails, one says it arrived in bad condition, and one describes stapling it to wooden frames. A reviewer prefers it for snails and does not trust it against rodents, and the rank is Rodent Control. The technical dimensions say 7.99 x 4 x 4 cm, which reads as the packed size rather than the unrolled sheet. You cut it and press it into cracks, and nothing in those four lines is a season on a hosta pot. It costs more than the FACIACC kit and has a thinner review file, so it is a spare roll when the 10 m length is what you measured for, not a top pick.

Pros

  • Bullets say 10 m by 12.7 cm at 150 g
  • 3.9 from 9 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • One review calls it good value for snails
  • Can be cut and stapled to a wooden frame, as one reviewer did

Cons

  • Only four review texts, and one says it arrived in bad condition
  • Also sold as a rodent filler; a reviewer does not trust that use
  • Ranked in Rodent Control
  • Thinner evidence than the FACIACC kit, at a higher price

Best for: You measured a run near 10 m and you will staple or press the mesh yourself.

Less suitable: You need a larger review sample, a kit with scissors, or a rodent-proof claim the reviews support.

What do the four reviews say?

One says it works, one calls it good value for snails, one says it arrived in bad condition, and one describes stapling it to wooden frames.

Ghligna 20 pack collars

Rank 10

Ghligna 20 pack collars

∼£16

Our view

The Ghligna pack is 20 PET collars at £15.99, with a 23 cm outer ring, 11.5 cm height, a 15 cm base and a 3 cm lip on the bullets. The technical line matches the outer size at 23 x 23 x 11.5 cm and 940 g. There is no star line and no review text in the saved listing, so the score is 18 and there is nothing to quote about slugs. The listing says you press the bottom edge 2 to 3 cm into soil or mulch and that you do not need stakes. The 45 degree curve and the 3 cm lip are seller claims. It was first listed on 6 June 2026, a short time on amazon.co.uk for a garden product to collect reviews. At £15.99 the shelf price is about £0.80 a collar, cheaper per piece than the 12-packs, and that arithmetic is not evidence a plant was left alone.

Pros

  • 20 collars, outer ring 23 cm, height 11.5 cm on the bullets
  • Technical line agrees at 23 x 23 x 11.5 cm, 940 g
  • Press-in fit of 2 to 3 cm, no stakes named
  • Lower price per collar than the about £12.99 12-packs

Cons

  • No star line and no review text
  • Lip and 45 degree curve are seller claims only
  • First listed 6 June 2026, so the review file is still empty
  • You cannot check a UK report that a crop was saved

Best for: You want 20 stated-size cabbage collars and will accept a listing with no amazon.co.uk reviews yet.

Less suitable: You need review evidence, a pot band, or a collar whose height you have seen in use.

BOBILIFE 20 protection rings

Rank 11

BOBILIFE 20 protection rings

∼£25

Our view

The BOBILIFE pack is 20 green PET rings at £24.88, the highest collar price in this set, with a claimed 45 degree flared edge. The listing says 23 cm at the top and 12 cm at the bottom, and 900 g, and it does not state a height. There is no star line, no review text and no best-sellers rank in the file, so the score is 14. The fit line says no tools: align the hole, slide the ring on and press the base into the soil. It was first listed on 2 September 2026. At £24.88 you pay more than the Ghligna 20-pack at £15.99 and still have no UK review that a plant survived. It is a stated top diameter without a height or a star line, and it is the collar to leave until reviews exist.

Pros

  • 20 PET rings, 23 cm at the top and 12 cm at the base
  • 900 g, slide-on fit with no tools named
  • 45 degree flare is at least described on the listing

Cons

  • About £24.88, the dearest collar pack, with no star line
  • Height is not stated
  • No review text and no rank in the file
  • First listed 2 September 2026

Best for: You specifically want a 23 cm top and a 12 cm base and you will wait for reviews before you treat it as proven.

Less suitable: You want a reviewed collar, a printed height, or a lower price for a 20-pack.

Dooaqiin copper mesh, 12 m

Rank 12

Dooaqiin copper mesh, 12 m

∼£10

Our view

The Dooaqiin listing is a copper mesh roll at £9.82, and the bullets say 12 m by 12.7 cm, cut with scissors, sold as a slug and snail barrier and also as a mouse and rat hole filler. The rank in the file is Garden Netting, not Slug & Snail Control. There is no star line and no review text. The weight line says 10 g, which is the figure printed for a 12 m roll and is hard to treat as a full copper mesh. The title leads with slugs while the bullets also sell rodent holes, so the file does not settle which job you are buying. At this price it is the cheapest mesh in the set only if the roll matches the title, and nothing in the file lets a review check that. The score is 6 because there are no ratings and the printed weight does not sit with the stated length.

Pros

  • Bullets state 12 m by 12.7 cm, the longest mesh length in the set
  • Shelf price about £9.82, cut with scissors
  • Sold for a rim and also described as a hole filler

Cons

  • No star line and no review text
  • Weight printed as 10 g for a 12 m roll
  • Ranked in Garden Netting, with a rodent use in the bullets
  • Slug performance is a title claim only

Best for: You want a long mesh length on the label and will check the roll in hand before you trust it on a bed edge.

Less suitable: You need reviews, a stated copper weight that matches 12 m, or a product that is only a slug barrier.

How we compared

Twelve amazon.co.uk listings were scored on 19 October 2026. Pellets, collars, tape, mesh, and traps were not lab-tested. A seller lip angle, a mucus claim, or a pet-friendly line stays a seller claim. Which? did not test the pellet ASIN on this page. The RHS lettuce trial is not a test of these collars. The top pick is the highest score. A very small review count cannot take that place, even at 4.9 or 5.0. Best value is the lowest shelf price with a review sample over 100. That badge is price plus sample, not proof the band stops slugs.

1

Stars

40%

amazon.co.uk rating divided by 5, times 40, rounded. A listing with no star line scores 0 on this block.

2

Review sample

25%

0 reviews scores 0. 1–2 scores 4. 5–9 scores 8. 20–49 scores 14. 100–249 scores 18. 1,000 or more scores 25. Bands between those cuts sit in the notes for each listing. If the review text is another product, these points are withheld.

3

Listing consistency

20%

20 points when the size lines agree. Points come off for a missing length, three sizes in one file, a 10 g weight on a 12 m roll, or review text about a different product.

4

On-topic reviews

15%

Snail protection buying guide

Start with the job, then the place, then whether you will use a pesticide. Snail protection is a collar, a felt disc, tape, mesh, a pellet, or a trap. They are not substitutes. Nothing on this page is a laboratory test.

What snail protection is for

Snail protection is the range of products UK gardeners use against slugs and snails on seedlings, brassicas, strawberries, hostas, and dahlias. A wet climate keeps the question open, including what replaced metaldehyde. The product has to match the job. New holes across a bed point to a thin scatter of bait where you cannot cover every plant. One small plant points to a lipped collar, and only while the plant still fits the ring.

Best for

  • Seedlings and brassicas through a wet fortnight, with a method that matches the bed
  • Patio pots, hostas, and dahlias, where the rim can be kept free of leaves
  • A household that will follow a pellet label, or that would rather use no bait

Not ideal for

  • A mature hosta crown inside a collar of about 15 to 26 cm
  • Indoor use, a heap of pellets, or a dog, hedgehog, or child who might eat them
  • Reading decking-tape reviews, or an empty star line, as proof a slug barrier works

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

A collar after the plant is wide

Lipped collars in this search are about 15 to 26 cm. A mature hosta does not fit, and reviewers say the ring is harder to seat once the foliage is already out. Fit it while the plant is still small. A felt disc is a mat, not that lip.

  2. 2

    A leaf over the tape

Copper tape and mesh are a rim treatment. A leaf that touches the soil or bridges the band is a path. The RHS barrier trial found no less lettuce damage from copper tape. Reviews also describe slime over the band and peel within a summer. A mucus line on the listing is a seller claim.

  3. 3

Heaped pellets, or the wrong review file

Scatter thinly and follow the label. Pet-friendly and OF&G are not a licence to let a dog eat pellets. Do not score a bait only by corpses on the surface. Do not treat a star line as slug control when the review text describes decking tape, and do not assume a beer trap includes the beer.

What to weigh up

Job, place, and plant size

High

A bed with new holes points to bait. One small plant points to a lipped collar. A pot rim points to tape or fastened mesh. A trap only catches what finds the beer. Collars of about 15 to 26 cm will not take a mature hosta. Felt is a mulch mat. Tape needs a clean dry rim, and a collar needs soil you can press.

Pesticide rule and whether the file matches

High

Outdoor metaldehyde has been illegal to sell and use in Great Britain since 1 April 2022. Ferric phosphate is the active public sources still discuss. Follow the label, and do not heap. Trust a listing when the size lines agree and the reviews describe that product. A missing length, a 10 g weight on a long roll, or decking-tape reviews are reasons to mark the file down. Captured shelf prices on 19 October 2026 run from about £3.99 to about £24.88.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

A vegetable bed in a wet fortnight

New holes across a bed point to a thin outdoor scatter, not a ring on every plant. Provanto Slug & Snail Killer Max 800 g at about £7.32 is the top pick: 4.4 from 6,699 amazon.co.uk reviews, with OF&G named on the bullets. The technical table does not print an active or a MAPP number. UK reviews often report damage stopping, and also mice, mould, and another scatter after rain. It is outdoor bait. Skip it if you want a barrier and no pesticide.

Hostas and dahlias in pots

A mature hosta does not fit a collar of about 15 to 26 cm. The job is a rim you can keep free of leaves. kanta copper slug tape, 20 mm, at about £3.99 is the best value: 4.1 from 221 reviews, the lowest shelf price here with a sample over 100. The listing does not state a length. Many of the first 50 reviews report peel, tarnish, or slugs crossing. Skip it if you need a printed metre count before you start.

A household with a dog

Pet-friendly wording is not a clearance for a dog to eat pellets. If you want no bait at all, HanYun is 12 PET collars at about £12.99, and the title and the technical line both say 21 cm by 12 cm. The line is 4.9 from 7 reviews, too small a sample for the top pick. Reviewers say fitting is harder once the plant is wide. Read the pack label before any pellet goes down, and store it away from children and dogs.

Common questions about Snail protection

What is snail protection?
Snail protection is any product you use to limit slug and snail damage on seedlings, brassicas, strawberries, or pot plants. It is not one object. A lipped collar, a felt disc, copper tape, copper mesh, a pellet bait, and a beer trap answer different jobs. A collar only works while the plant fits the ring. Tape and mesh need a rim without a leaf bridge. A trap only catches animals that enter the bait. A pellet is a thin outdoor scatter, not a heap and not an indoor treatment.
Which snail protection is the top pick, and which is best value?
The top pick is Provanto Slug & Snail Killer Max 800 g at about £7.32. It has the highest score: 4.4 from 6,699 amazon.co.uk reviews, and the bullets name OF&G. The technical table does not print an active or a MAPP number. Reviews often report less damage, and also mice, mould, and another scatter after rain. The best value is kanta copper slug tape, 20 mm, at about £3.99, with 4.1 from 221 reviews. The length is not stated. Many reviews report peeling or slugs crossing.
Can I still buy metaldehyde slug pellets?
No. In Great Britain, outdoor metaldehyde sale and use ended after 31 March 2022. Selling and using it has been illegal since 1 April 2022. GOV.UK and Defra set that date to protect wildlife. Ferric phosphate is the pellet active that AHDB, Which?, and the RHS still discuss. An old tub that might be metaldehyde should not go on the garden or the compost. Take banned pellets to the council. On any pellet you do use, follow the label, scatter thinly, and store the pack away from children and dogs.
Should I choose pellets, a collar, tape, or a trap?
Choose by the job. New holes across a bed point to a thin pellet scatter. One small plant points to a lipped collar of about 15 to 26 cm, fitted before the plant is wide. A pot rim points to tape or fastened mesh, kept clear of leaves. A beer trap only catches what finds the beer, and you should assume the beer is not in the box unless the listing says so. A comparison that stays on pellets is the slug pellets comparison.
Does copper tape or mesh stop slugs?
Do not treat that as settled. The RHS barrier trial found no less lettuce damage from copper tape, eggshells, grit, bark, or wool. Amazon reviews on tape and mesh are split. Some buyers report pots left alone. Others describe slime trails over the tape, snails sitting on it, or slugs crawling over mesh. If you try a band, keep the rim clean and free of leaf bridges. A title that says slug tape is not slug evidence when the reviews describe another product.
Are organic or pet-friendly pellets safe for a dog?
No product on this page is safe for a dog, a hedgehog, or a child to eat. Pet-friendly wording is not a clearance to heap pellets or to let a dog eat them. OF&G is an organic-inputs mark, not a pet-safety certificate. The RHS advises against slug pellets, including organic ones. HSE guidance is a thin scatter and storage in the original pack, away from children and dogs. If a pet has eaten pellets, use the pack label and get help.
Will a slug collar fit a hosta?
Only while the crown still fits the ring. Collars sold for this job are about 15 to 26 cm across. A mature hosta does not fit, and fitting is harder once the plant is already wide. Pots in an RHS lettuce trial lost far less leaf than open soil. For hostas and dahlias in pots, the usual physical job is a rim you can keep clear. Tape and mesh are that shape. A collar is the wrong object for a wide clump.
When should I stop and get help?
Stop if a pet has eaten pellets, if an old tub might be metaldehyde, or if the product is missing from the HSE garden pesticides information. Slugs established indoors are outside a garden bait. One reviewer returned an outdoor pellet after a kitchen try. Banned pellets go to the council, not the compost. Do not score a pellet only by corpses on the surface. AHDB says feeding stops and death is often underground within about three to six days.

Our verdict

The top pick is Provanto Slug & Snail Killer Max 800 g at about £7.32. It is the highest score: 4.4 from 6,699 amazon.co.uk reviews, and the bullets say the tub is OF&G registered for organic growing. The technical table does not print an active substance or a MAPP number. Across the first 50 UK reviews, damage often stops, including on hostas and vegetables, and the same sample repeats mice, cold-frame mould, and another scatter after heavy rain. It is outdoor bait, and it is the wrong buy if you want a barrier and no pesticide. The best value is kanta copper slug tape, 20 mm, at about £3.99, with 4.1 from 221 reviews. That is the lowest shelf price here with a sample over 100. The length is not on the listing. Many reviews report peel or slugs crossing. Neither score is a laboratory result, and a bed, a seedling, and a hosta pot are different jobs.
