Flea spray comparison 2026

The best Flea sprays, compared.

Top pick: Indorex household twin, 2 x 500 ml Best value: FRONTLINE HomeGard, 500 ml – About £11.24 for 500 ml, the cheaper household can that still names a growth regulator, at 4.2 from 7,269 reviews. Updated October 2026.

A flea spray is what you buy when fleas are in a UK home and you need either a product for the room or a separate bottle for the coat. Those are two jobs. A household aerosol is for carpets, rugs, pet bedding and other soft furnishings. A coat spray is a small bottle for fur, and it does not treat the floor. Animal flea-killers can be veterinary medicines. Home insect-killers are biocides, under separate rules in Great Britain and Northern Ireland. About 95 percent of an infestation is in the home, so the usual purchase is a household can plus a species-correct product on every pet the same day. On a room can, look for an adulticide and an insect growth regulator, a coverage line you can set against the floor, and a label that keeps animals out until the surface is dry. A household spray stays off the coat. Keep animals and fish tanks out, then air the room. How to tell a room can from a coat bottle is in the [flea spray buying guide](/hub/pest-control/flea-spray/sub/flea-spray-buying-guide).

A flea spray is what you buy when fleas are in a UK home and you need either a product for the room or a separate bottle for the coat. Those are two jobs.

The best Flea sprays in detail

Indorex household twin, 2 x 500 ml

Rank 1

Indorex household twin, 2 x 500 ml

∼£25

Our view

The Indorex-branded twin pack is 2 × 500 ml at £25.34, with the highest star line in this set, 4.8 from 166 amazon.co.uk reviews. Fifty saved reviews describe two bottles covering a small three-bedroom house, a method of spraying one room and shutting the door, and little residual odour once the room is aired. One repeat buyer says cans that used to work did not this time, and that flea dirt remained after can after can. Another used three cans over the house. The scrape has no active-ingredient line, so pyriproxyfen is not printed here even though the title claims up to 12 months. The brand field says Indorex, not Virbac. A 4.8 from 166 reviews is a thinner file than 4.6 from 25,417, which is why this row is not the top pick. Pets and plants come out before you spray.

Pros

  • 4.8 from 166 reviews, the highest star line in this set
  • Two 500 ml cans at £25.34
  • Listing says odourless, and several reviews report little residual smell
  • Reviewers used it alongside a collar or tablets, not instead of a pet treatment

Cons

  • No active ingredients printed on this scrape
  • 166 reviews, against 25,417 on the Virbac single can
  • A heavy infestation was not cleared by repeating the same cans
  • Brand field says Indorex, not Virbac

Best for: You want two cans and this Indorex-branded listing is the one in stock, and you accept a short review file with no active line.

Less suitable: Anyone choosing on review volume, or a shopper who needs the active ingredients printed on the page.

Common questions

Who is the brand on this listing?

The brand field says Indorex, and the manufacturer field says Indorex. It does not say Virbac. The title is a 2 x 500 ml household spray with an up-to-12-months claim.

Are the active ingredients on the scrape?

No. The active-ingredient field is missing. The bullets say it kills fleas and lice, is odourless, and acts on contact.

What did reviewers say about pets?

Several say remove pets before spraying, and some used a collar or tablets as well. One review says repeated cans did not clear flea dirt.

Virbac Indorex Defence twin, 2 x 500 ml

Rank 2

Virbac Indorex Defence twin, 2 x 500 ml

∼£24

Our view

The Virbac Indorex Defence twin is two 500 ml cans at £24.49, rated 4.7 from 3,098 amazon.co.uk reviews. Fifty saved reviews say two bottles covered a three-bedroom house for several buyers, and some reached skirting after a fogger had not. A very thorough one-bed flat used nearly four bottles, so the listing’s one-can line for a three-to-four-bedroom house is a claim, not a measured floor. The smell is strong while the room is shut, and one buyer wanted a mask and fresh-air breaks. A reviewer who re-sprayed every two weeks rejected the 12-month line, and another guessed six to eight months. The active field names permethrin, piperonyl butoxide, chrysanthemum and pyriproxyfen, which this scrape prints more cleanly than the single-can file. Keep animals, aquaria and reptile vivariums out. About £12.25 a can is below the single listing’s £13.63, and you still pay for both cans whether the second one is opened.

Pros

  • Two 500 ml cans for £24.49, about £12.25 each
  • 4.7 from 3,098 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • Active line names permethrin, piperonyl butoxide, chrysanthemum and pyriproxyfen
  • Reviewers used it on carpets, pet beds and soft furnishings

Cons

  • £24.49 up front even if one can would have been enough
  • Strong smell while the surface is wet
  • A thorough spray of every nook can use more than two cans
  • One review says the can has to be turned upside down to spray

Best for: A three-bedroom house you expect to spray thoroughly, where a spare 500 ml can is the reason for the pack.

Less suitable: A one-bed flat that will finish a single can, or anyone treating the animal rather than the room.

Common questions

How many cans are in the pack?

The title is 2 x 500 ml. The unit count is 2. The active-ingredient field names permethrin, piperonyl butoxide, Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium and pyriproxyfen.

What coverage does the listing claim?

A 500 ml can will treat approximately a 3-4 bedroom house, for bedding, soft furnishings or carpet.

Do the saved reviews say it is for the pet?

Reviewers describe spraying the house and keeping animals away, including aquaria and reptile vivariums. The bullets do not say to spray the animal.

Virbac Indorex Defence, 500 ml

Rank 3

Virbac Indorex Defence, 500 ml

∼£14

Our view

Across 25,417 amazon.co.uk reviews, the Virbac Indorex Defence 500 ml can is the household flea spray with the largest file in this set, at 4.6 and £13.63. Reviewers in the 50 notes read for this row describe a contact kill on bedding and carpet, and several say one can covered a three-bedroom house or a one-bed flat. The same notes say a thorough spray of every crevice often opens a second can, and that newly hatched fleas still appear after a correct treatment. The listing claims adults for up to two months and eggs and larvae for up to 12 months, while one long-term buyer says the protection they saw was closer to three months. The volume field says 200 ml against a 500 ml title, so the title and the unit count are the pack size to trust. It is the top pick here because of that review count and a named growth regulator, pyriproxyfen, not because this page ran a lab test. Keep animals out, including aquaria, until the room has been aired.

Pros

  • 4.6 from 25,417 amazon.co.uk reviews, the largest file in this set
  • Bullets name permethrin, piperonyl butoxide, chrysanthemum and pyriproxyfen
  • Listing coverage of about a three-to-four-bedroom house
  • Reviewers report little sticky residue once the room is aired

Cons

  • A thorough whole-house spray often needs a second can
  • Volume field says 200 ml against the 500 ml title
  • The active-ingredient line only says Spray
  • One repeat buyer did not see the 12-month residual claim

Best for: A typical UK home that wants one 500 ml household can with a named growth regulator and the largest review file in this comparison.

Less suitable: A coat treatment for a cat or dog, or a flat that only wants the cheapest aerosol and will not follow a re-entry time.

Common questions

Is this a spray for the room or the pet?

The title and bullets describe a household flea spray for bedding, soft furnishings and carpet. The pet-type field says cat and dog. This scrape does not say to put the can on an animal.

What pack size should you trust?

The title and the unit count say 500 ml. The item-volume field says 200 ml. Treat that volume line as a conflict, not as the pack size.

What do the bullets name as ingredients?

Permethrin, piperonyl butoxide, Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium and pyriproxyfen. The separate active-ingredient line only says Spray.

Zero In AMZ026, 2 x 300 ml

Rank 4

Zero In AMZ026, 2 x 300 ml

Our view

Zero In AMZ026 is a twin pack of 300 ml aerosols at £8.99, rated 4.3 from 591 amazon.co.uk reviews. Each can is listed for up to 15 square metres of carpet, rugs, soft furnishing and pet bedding, and the bullets call it an off-pet treatment. Fifty saved reviews mention the spare can for a second pass, and one buyer reported no carpet discolouration. Many one-line reviews say it did not kill fleas, and the smell is a repeated complaint, including fog, a cough, and one COPD buyer who vomited. The bullets name cyphenothrin and prallethrin while the active line says permethrin, and no growth regulator is named. One of two cans failed to spray in a saved review, and a house plant died. It is the cheapest household pack in this set, and it is not the best value if you want a named insect growth regulator.

Pros

  • £8.99 for two 300 ml cans, the lowest household price here
  • Each can listed for up to 15 square metres
  • 4.3 from 591 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • A spare can in the pack for a second pass

Cons

  • No insect growth regulator named on the listing
  • Bullets and the active line name different substances
  • Strong chemical smell and respiratory irritation in reviews
  • One saved review had a can that would not spray

Best for: A small floor area, about 15 square metres a can, when you want the lowest household shelf price and will accept the ingredient conflict.

Less suitable: A three-bedroom house that needs a named growth regulator, or anyone who reacts to a strong aerosol smell.

Common questions

What does one can cover, according to the listing?

Each 300 ml can treats up to 15 square metres. The title is a twin pack. The liquid-volume field says 600 ml.

Which ingredients are named?

The bullets say cyphenothrin and prallethrin. The active-ingredient line says permethrin. Those lines conflict. The scrape does not resolve them.

Is it for the pet?

The bullets call it an off-pet treatment for carpets, rugs, soft furnishing and pet bedding. They do not say to spray the animal.

FRONTLINE HomeGard, 500 ml

Rank 5

FRONTLINE HomeGard, 500 ml

∼£11

Our view

Across 7,269 amazon.co.uk reviews, FRONTLINE HomeGard is a 500 ml household spray at £11.24, with a 4.2 line. The listing says never spray it on animals, keep pets out until the surface is dry, about one hour, then air the room. Fifty saved reviews praise a nozzle that empties and dead fleas on the carpet the next day when dogs were kept out. Several of those reviews say an Indorex can worked after this one did not, and that frequent hoovering shortened the protection they expected. The active field prints only methoprene, while the bullets also name permethrin and (S)-methoprene. It is the best value among the 500 ml cans that still name a growth regulator. The 4.2 line sits below the Indorex rows, and the cat warning is easy to miss if you only read the short bullets.

Pros

  • £11.24 for 500 ml, below the Indorex single can
  • Bullets name permethrin and (S)-methoprene
  • Listing states a dry time of about one hour, then air the room
  • 4.2 from 7,269 reviews, the second-largest file in this set

Cons

  • Several reviews say Indorex worked after HomeGard did not
  • Active field names only methoprene
  • Strong smell, and one review reports a rash after repeated spraying
  • One can does not go far in a home with many pets

Best for: You want a cheaper 500 ml household can that still names an insect growth regulator, and you will keep pets out for about an hour.

Less suitable: You want the largest review file, or you need the listing to state a bedroom count the way the Indorex page does.

Common questions

Can you spray this on a cat?

No. The listing says never spray it on animals. Permethrin is described as toxic to cats above certain concentrations. Keep pets in another room until the surface is dry, about one hour, then air the room.

What ingredients does the listing actually print?

The active-ingredient field says methoprene. The bullets also name (S)-methoprene and, in the warning, permethrin.

Where does the listing say to spray?

Carpets, rugs, sofas and other nooks. It says the spray can be used in homes with dogs and cats when animals are kept away until it is dry.

Isabella's Clearly CATS, 60 ml

Rank 6

Isabella's Clearly CATS, 60 ml

∼£20

Our view

Isabella’s Clearly CATS is a 60 ml lavender and rosemary topical spray at £19.99, rated 3.8 from 53 amazon.co.uk reviews. The title and the pet-type field say cats, the age-range field says Adult, and the listing claims up to eight hours. Fourteen saved reviews include a pleasant scent and, in a few notes from outside the UK, less scratching. UK reviews in the file say it did not work, was not worth the money, or was not concentrated. More than one note says cats hated the hard spray, and a buyer asked for a mister instead. The dog-breed-size field says Small, which conflicts with a cat title. At £19.99 for 60 ml it is the expensive bottle in this set, and it is a hydrosol rather than a household aerosol. It does not name an insect growth regulator, and the kitten question on the page is unanswered.

Pros

  • Title and pet type name cats, in a 60 ml lavender and rosemary spray
  • Listing claims up to eight hours on the coat
  • Several reviews like the scent
  • 3.8 from 53 reviews, a larger file than the peppermint coat spray

Cons

  • UK reviews in the file say it did not stop fleas
  • £19.99 for 60 ml, the highest price per bottle for a coat spray here
  • The spray force upset some cats
  • Dog-breed-size field says Small on a cat product

Best for: An adult cat whose owner wants a lavender topical and has already read that the UK reviews in this file are weak on fleas.

Less suitable: A room infestation, a kitten, or a shopper who wants a named household insecticide and a growth regulator.

Common questions

What animal is this spray for?

The title and pet type say cats. It is a 60 ml lavender and rosemary topical spray. The dog-breed-size field says Small, which conflicts with the title.

How long does the listing say it lasts?

Up to 8 hours. The age-range field says Adult. The kitten question on the page is not answered in the scrape.

Did reviewers say it stopped fleas?

UK reviews in the file say it did not work, was not worth the money, or was not concentrated. A minority of reviews, several from outside the UK, liked the smell or reported less scratching.

LIXINGLY coat spray, 100 ml

Rank 7

LIXINGLY coat spray, 100 ml

Our view

LIXINGLY is a 100 ml coat spray of peppermint oil and eugenol at £8.49, rated 3.8 from 26 amazon.co.uk reviews, and the listing says it is not a veterinary medicine. Eight saved reviews include two dogs whose scratching stopped straight away, and a buyer who used it on seven cats and liked the smell before forest walks. A small dog still scratched after a week, one verified review says it did not work, and another is only the words “Not for cats”. Concentrations are not on the listing. A non-purchaser in the file warns that peppermint oil and eugenol can be toxic to dogs when the strength is unknown. There is no room-coverage line, so this is not a household can. Blue Cross says herbal flea remedies are not an effective long-term method, which is the limit on this bottle.

Pros

  • 100 ml at £8.49, aimed at the coat rather than the room
  • Peppermint oil and eugenol are named on the listing
  • Some dog reviews report scratching stopping the same day
  • The listing also mentions bedding, not a whole-house coverage claim

Cons

  • Only 26 reviews, with eight texts saved in the file
  • A verified review says it is not for cats
  • Concentrations of peppermint oil and eugenol are not listed
  • The listing says it is not a veterinary medicine

Best for: Occasional coat use on a dog between walks, when a species-correct flea product is already in use and you only want a scented spray.

Less suitable: A cat household treating rooms, or anyone expecting this bottle to kill fleas the way a household insecticide can does.

Is this a household flea can?

No. It is a 100 ml spray of peppermint oil and eugenol for the coat of cats and dogs, and the listing also mentions bedding. It says it is not a veterinary medicine.

Can it be used on kittens or puppies?

The listing asks those questions. It does not answer them. Concentrations of peppermint oil and eugenol are not given.

Some report less scratching on dogs or cats and a pleasant smell. Others say a dog still scratched, that it did not work, or that it is not for cats.

How we compared

Seven amazon.co.uk listings are scored from the star line alone. A 4.8 becomes 96, because the score is that average times 20. Review volume, a named growth regulator, pack size and listing conflicts do not add points. They are written in the assessment and they decide the awards. The top pick is the household can with the largest review count, not the highest score. Best value is the cheaper 500 ml household can that still names a growth regulator. On-coat sprays are not badged. This is not a flea-kill test.

Flea spray buying guide

Start with the job. A household aerosol treats carpets, bedding and soft furnishings. A coat spray does not. On a room can, look for an adulticide and a growth regulator, a coverage line, and a re-entry rule. Shelf prices captured here run from about £8.49 to about £25.34. The top pick is the household can with the largest review file. Best value is the cheaper 500 ml can that still names a growth regulator. The score is the amazon.co.uk star line times 20, not a flea-kill test.

What is a flea spray?

A flea spray on amazon.co.uk is two products sold under one name. A household aerosol is an insecticide for carpets, rugs, pet bedding and other soft furnishings. A coat spray is a small bottle for fur. They are not substitutes, and a plant-oil bottle is not a cheaper household can. Spot-ons, tablets, collars and foggers are outside this set. Animal flea-killers can be veterinary medicines.

Best for

  • A home treating carpets and soft furnishings, with pets out until dry
  • A small flat that will finish one 500 ml household can
  • A three-bedroom house where a second can is likely

Not ideal for

  • Putting a household can on a cat or a dog
  • Treating the carpet with a 60 ml coat spray
  • Expecting a plant-oil bottle to replace a veterinary product

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

Spraying the pet with the household can

Indorex and HomeGard say not on animals. PDSA says a household spray or a dog flea product on a cat is an emergency. Animals stay out until the surface is dry, then the room is aired. A pet-type field that says cat does not change that.

  2. 2

Using a coat bottle on the carpet

LIXINGLY is 100 ml and Isabella's Clearly CATS is 60 ml. Neither has a room-coverage line. Blue Cross says herbal flea remedies are not an effective long-term method. Do not treat one animal and leave the other.

  3. 3

Judging the can on day one

Pupae can still hatch after a correct spray. Do not vacuum the residue off at once or soak polished wood. A thorough three-bedroom job is where reviewers often open a second can. The one-can coverage line is a label claim.

What to weigh up

Job and growth regulator

High

A flea spray listing is either a household aerosol for carpets, rugs, pet bedding and soft furnishings, or a coat product whose label allows that species. Do not rank them as substitutes. Spot-ons, tablets, collars and foggers are out of scope. Five listings here are household cans. Two are coat sprays. Blue Cross recommends a household spray that contains an insect growth regulator. Pyriproxyfen is named in the bullets of Virbac Indorex Defence, on the 500 ml can and on the Virbac twin.

Label limits and coverage

High

What you must not spray matters as much as the active. Indorex and HomeGard say not on animals. PDSA says a household spray or a dog flea product on a cat is an emergency, and that a household permethrin spray is for the room only: animals out, about half an hour vacant, then at least an hour of ventilation. Blue Cross says never use permethrin sprays on cats, and that flea spray is highly toxic to fish. HomeGard says pets out until dry, about one hour, then air.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

A cat in the home

You need a re-entry rule, not a spray on the coat. Virbac Indorex Defence, 500 ml, at about £13.63 is the top pick: a household can, 4.6 from 25,417 reviews, with pyriproxyfen named in the bullets. Animals stay out until the room has been aired, including aquaria. It is the wrong can if you meant to spray the cat. A pet-type field that says cat does not put this aerosol on the coat.

One can for a small flat

A small flat may finish one 500 ml can, and you want the cheaper can that still names a growth regulator. FRONTLINE HomeGard, 500 ml, is about £11.24, with 4.2 from 7,269 reviews. The listing says never spray it on animals, and pets stay out until dry, about one hour, then you air the room. Several reviews say an Indorex can worked after this one did not. Skip it if you need the largest review file.

A thorough three-bedroom spray

Reviewers of a thorough three-bedroom spray often open a second can. Virbac Indorex Defence twin, 2 x 500 ml, is about £24.49, with 4.7 from 3,098 reviews. The listing still claims one 500 ml can for about a three-to-four-bedroom house, which is a claim, not a measured floor. You pay for both cans whether the second is opened. Leave it if a one-bed flat will finish a single can, or if you meant to treat the animal.

Common questions about Flea sprays

Which flea spray is the top pick in 2026?
The top pick is Virbac Indorex Defence, 500 ml, at about £13.63. It is the household can with the largest amazon.co.uk review file in this set, 4.6 from 25,417 reviews, and the bullets name pyriproxyfen. The score is the star line times 20, so a 4.8 from 166 reviews is a higher number and is not the top pick. A thorough spray often needs a second can. The volume field says 200 ml against the 500 ml title.
Which flea spray is the best value?
The best value is FRONTLINE HomeGard, 500 ml, at about £11.24, with 4.2 from 7,269 reviews. It is the cheaper 500 ml household can that still names a growth regulator, (S)-methoprene, and the bullets also name permethrin. The listing says never spray it on animals, keep pets out until the surface is dry, about one hour, then air the room. Several reviews say an Indorex can worked after this one did not.
How much does flea spray cost?
Captured amazon.co.uk prices run from about £8.49 to about £25.34. About £8 to £9 covers LIXINGLY or the Zero In twin. About £11 to £14 covers FRONTLINE HomeGard at about £11.24 and Virbac Indorex Defence 500 ml at about £13.63. About £20 to £26 covers Isabella's Clearly CATS or a 2 x 500 ml twin. The higher coat-spray price is a hydrosol, not a larger household can.
What should I check before I buy a flea spray?
Check the job first. A household aerosol is for carpets and soft furnishings. A coat spray is for fur, and the two are not substitutes. On a room can, look for an adulticide and a growth regulator, a coverage line, and a label that keeps animals out until dry. Read conflicts on the page: the Indorex 500 ml volume field says 200 ml against a 500 ml title, and Zero In's bullets and active line name different substances.
Can I use a household flea spray on a cat?
No. PDSA says a household spray or a dog flea product on a cat is an emergency. FRONTLINE HomeGard says never spray it on animals, and permethrin is toxic to cats above certain concentrations. Keep pets out until the surface is dry, about one hour, then air the room. Blue Cross says never use permethrin sprays on cats, and that flea spray is highly toxic to fish. A cat that was sprayed, or is twitching, needs a vet.
Is a coat spray the same as a household flea spray?
No. Five listings here are household insecticides for the room. Two are small coat sprays: LIXINGLY, peppermint oil and eugenol, 100 ml, which says it is not a veterinary medicine, and Isabella's Clearly CATS, lavender and rosemary, 60 ml. Blue Cross says herbal flea remedies are not an effective long-term method. Do not spray the carpet with a 60 ml coat bottle, or the pet with the household can. Spot-ons, tablets, collars and foggers are outside this comparison.
When should I call a vet or a pest controller?
Call a vet or a pest controller if bites continue for weeks after a correct room spray and a pet treatment, if fleas are in a shared block, if a cat was sprayed with a household can or is twitching, or if you cannot ventilate. Do not keep adding cans on day one while pupae can still hatch. If the insects are in the mattress and a flea can is the wrong job, see the bed bug spray comparison.

Our verdict

The top pick is Virbac Indorex Defence, 500 ml, at about £13.63. It is the household can with the largest amazon.co.uk review file in this set, 4.6 from 25,417 reviews, and the bullets name pyriproxyfen. The numeric score is only the star line, so the Indorex-branded twin at 4.8 from 166 reviews scores higher and is not the top pick. A thorough spray often needs a second can, and the volume field says 200 ml against the 500 ml title. The best value is FRONTLINE HomeGard, 500 ml, at about £11.24, with 4.2 from 7,269 reviews. It is the cheaper 500 ml household can that still names a growth regulator. The listing says never spray it on animals. None of these scores is a flea-kill test.
