How to use flea spray

Updated: 23 October 2026

How to use flea spray, for a household aerosol, is a sequence: clear the room, spray the surfaces the listing names, stay out for that can’s time, then air it. It is not a method for a 60 ml coat bottle, and it is not one averaged clock for every brand. Products Compared did not run a treatment. The steps follow the Indorex client leaflet, Frontline’s HomeGard page, Blue Cross, and the separate rules Medway Council and the British Pest Control Association publish for a professional visit. The [flea spray comparison](/hub/pest-control/flea-spray) is where the cans are ranked. A qualifying amazon.co.uk purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Before you spray

Vacuum the floors, the sofa edges and the pet beds before you open the aerosol, then empty the machine outside. Blue Cross pairs that vacuum with a wash of bedding at 60 degrees. People and pets leave the rooms, including dogs, cats, birds and fish you can move. Cover a tank you cannot carry out and switch the pump off. Indorex’s leaflet also wants reptiles and aquaria kept away. Test a hidden patch of fabric first. Do not spray the animal. The household can is for carpet, rugs, soft furnishings and pet bedding. If you have cats, the harm and the charity wording sit on flea spray if you have cats. A 60 ml lavender spray or a 100 ml peppermint spray is not the tool this sequence describes.

How much and where

Hold an Indorex can about 50 cm from the surface. The client leaflet says to turn it upside down, and the rate is a five-second burst for about one square metre. HomeGard’s page is about 1.3 seconds per square metre. Do not mix those numbers. Using the Indorex burst on a HomeGard instruction will empty the can on the first room. Work carpets, rugs, the gaps under cushions, skirting and pet bedding. Do not soak polished wood. Indorex says one 500 ml can treats about a three-to-four-bedroom house. Reviewers who did every crevice often started a second can. Zero In lists each 300 ml can for up to 15 square metres. A flea bomb is a different product. One residual layer, from the can you chose, is enough for the day. Which can to buy is the flea spray buying guide.

How long to stay out

HomeGard says keep the room vacant until the surface is dry, about one hour, then air it, and never spray the product on animals. Indorex’s client leaflet says leave the rooms closed for half an hour, then ventilate for at least an hour. Those are two labelled routines. They are not an average of 45 minutes. Medway Council says stay out for at least two hours and do not vacuum for 14 days. BPCA says do not wash or vacuum for two weeks after a professional residual treatment. That fortnight is not the Indorex leaflet. Use the time on your can. Air the rooms before anyone sleeps in them. A rash, a cough, or a pet on wet carpet means stop and ventilate.

Fleas the next week

Live fleas the next morning do not, by themselves, mean the can was empty. Pupae in cocoons are not killed by the spray. The Indorex leaflet tells you to vacuum floors and upholstery for seven days after a home treatment so those pupae hatch onto the residue, and to empty the vacuum outside. That is the opposite of the professional instruction not to vacuum for a fortnight. Your can’s leaflet wins for a can you sprayed yourself. Your controller’s note wins after their visit. If fleas are still obvious after that hatch window, and every pet has a species-correct product, a second can is the coverage question. Call a vet or a pest controller if bites continue for weeks, the building is shared, a cat was sprayed, or you cannot ventilate.

Common questions

Do I vacuum before or after?
Both, and the after depends on who sprayed. Vacuum before you start and empty the machine outside. After Indorex at home, the client leaflet says vacuum for seven days so pupae hatch. After a council or other professional residual treatment, Medway and BPCA say do not vacuum for about two weeks.
How long do pets stay out of the room?
For HomeGard, until the surface is dry, about one hour, then air the room. For Indorex, half an hour closed, then at least an hour of ventilation. For a Medway council treatment, at least two hours. The can you bought is the clock you use.
Should I use a flea bomb instead?
A fogger is a different product. Use one approach for the day, not a bomb and a heavy spray on top of each other. If a controller is coming, follow their preparation sheet rather than adding your own fog the night before.
What do I do with a fish tank I cannot move?
Cover it and switch the pump off so the aerosol is not drawn into the water. Blue Cross says flea spray is highly toxic to fish. Moving the tank out is better when you can lift it.
When do I stop and call a pest controller?
Call when bites continue for weeks after a correct room treatment and a species-correct product on every pet, when fleas are moving through a shared block, or when you cannot ventilate. Twitching, drooling or seizures in a cat are a vet call the same hour.
Does this sequence apply to a 60 ml coat spray?
No. Isabella’s Clearly CATS and the LIXINGLY peppermint spray are coat products with no room-coverage rate. You do not walk a five-second burst across the carpet with a 60 ml bottle, and you do not put the household aerosol on the cat.
