What you are actually trying to stop

A pine marten and a mouse in a parked car are different problems, and the listing title often uses one word for both. The Mammal Society and the Vincent Wildlife Trust describe the pine marten as a woodland species in Britain. A stone marten in an engine bay is a mainland European pattern. The RAC reported a 28% rise in rodent-related vehicle claims in 2024, and an average claim of £2,494 from Aviva figures in that article. That average is not your quote. The AA has described mice, rats, squirrels and foxes damaging vehicles.

Three mechanisms and the listing to open

Scent, ultrasound and a climb barrier are the three mechanisms. Who should buy which row is on the best marten repellent page. The BMUT MS-500 is 500 ml geraniol at £16.00, 4.1 from 385 reviews. The £5.99 Kunagone single, 3.8 from 108, is the cheapest pouch with a review count. The £5.86 single has no star line. The £24.99 four-pouch set is 2.8 from 13, and its UK reviews are about badgers. Technaxx at £9.98 prints 12–24 kHz. HONGXIAN at £18.90 is 4.8 from 15, with UK mouse comments and a conflicting power field. ISOTRONIC 84025 is the belt at £17.92. Kilohertz and square-metre lines are maker claims.

Rules that remove options

HSE says a chemical repellent falls under the GB Biocidal Products Regulation, while a purely physical device does not. Northern Ireland follows the EU BPR. The Advertising Standards Authority has not accepted efficacy claims for electronic pest scarers on testimonials alone. GOV.UK says trapping a pine marten needs a licence. This guide does not tell you to set one. A chewed loom sits on stop animals chewing car wires.

A five-line decision

If you will not touch the battery, start with the £5.99 pouch or the £16.00 geraniol spray. If you want a printed frequency, open Technaxx at £9.98. If you weigh the UK mouse comments, open HONGXIAN and live with the power conflict. A downpipe is the ISOTRONIC belt. A chewed loom, or a possible pine marten den, means a garage or the wildlife body first.

Common questions

Are pine martens protected in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland?
Yes. In Great Britain the pine marten is on Schedule 5 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, which NatureScot explains as a bar on intentional killing, injury or taking, and on damaging or blocking a den. Northern Ireland protects the species under the Wildlife (NI) Order 1985, as DAERA's leaflet sets out. A dwelling-house exception on disturbance, described by NatureScot, is not permission to block a den or to trap an animal. GOV.UK says a pine marten trap needs a licence.
Can I buy a scent spray because it prints a German number?
You can buy the bottle. The number does not do the legal work for you. BMUT prints N-111079 and says the spray is made in Germany. This scrape does not show that code as a GB biocidal authorisation. HSE treats a chemical repellent as a biocidal product, and Northern Ireland uses the EU BPR. Read the label that arrives. A printed foreign code is a line of text until an HSE record says otherwise.
When is a spike belt the right type instead of a box?
Buy a belt when the route is a climb you can see: a downpipe, a gutter or a tree trunk. ISOTRONIC 84025 is two stainless strips at £17.92 and says a circumference over 50 cm needs more strips. A belt does not sit on a wiring loom, so an engine bay is the wrong job for it. If the fitting point is above a ladder you are unsure of, that is a roofer's visit rather than an afternoon with cable ties.
What should I ignore when one field says solar and the bullets say 12 V?
Ignore neither line. Treat the conflict as the fact. HONGXIAN's power field says solar, and the bullets say a USB adaptor, 4 AA cells or vehicle power. One UK review also mentions 12/24 V. The same listing prints 10 × 10 × 10 millimetres and 170 g. Buy it only if you will open the box and confirm the lead. Technaxx, at £9.98, states AA cells, a 12 V cable or USB-C in one kit if you want the power options to agree on the page.
Do star ratings prove the device works?
They prove how amazon.co.uk reviewers scored that listing. They do not prove a clearance. The ASA has not accepted efficacy claims for electronic pest scarers on testimonials alone. In this set, 4.8 from 15 reviews scores higher on the star-times-20 method than 4.1 from 385, and the top pick still follows the larger file. A Best Sellers Rank is Amazon's list order. No row here is a UK trial.
Who do I ask before I block a hole in a loft?
If the animal might be a pine marten, contact NatureScot in Scotland, Natural England in England, or Natural Resources Wales in Wales before you seal the hole. Blocking a den is a Schedule 5 issue, not a gadget choice. A dwelling-house note on disturbance is not a DIY licence. For chewed copper, a no-start, or battery wiring you cannot fuse, the call is a garage. For a gutter you cannot reach safely, the call is a roofer.
