Neem oil for hair and an itchy scalp

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have an itchy scalp or a dry patch of skin, the smell of neem does not put you off, and the amazon.co.uk titles mention eczema, acne or head lice. This page is about neem oil for hair as a cosmetic oil: which bottles are skin oils, how strong to start, and where NHS and NICE pages stop. The [neem oil comparison](/hub/pest-control/neem-oil) lists all nine bottles, with GBP prices from 21 October 2026. Products Compared read the UK listings against NHS and NICE pages, and did not run a clinical trial. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What the skin bottles actually are

Fushi is 50 ml at £9.98, about £19.96 per 100 ml, 4.2 from 146 reviews, with a London workshop claim and dark glass. Daana is 120 ml at £9.99, about £8.33 per 100 ml, 4.3 from 125 reviews, for face, hair and body. SVA is 118 ml at £9.99 with a dropper and 4.5 from 20,301 reviews. Ourons 100 ml and 500 ml also mention skin, and they are clumsy as a scalp bottle. One Fushi buyer still noticed the smell after two washes. SVA’s 20,301 reviews also name moringa, amla and black seed, so that count is not a neem hair sample.

How strong to start

Absolute Aromas says not to use neem oil undiluted and not to go above 10% neem in another carrier. Patch-test first. That 10% ceiling is a UK seller instruction, not a medical dose. The Daana listing itself talks about a few drops. Put the diluted oil on the inner forearm and wait 24 hours. Redness or a spreading itch means you stop. One Daana reviewer who applied the oil neat said not to. The Neem Team does not recommend it in pregnancy or for internal use. Keep it away from cats: a 2009 Veterinary Record letter records adverse reactions. If a child has swallowed the oil, contact NHS 111.

Eczema and head lice

NICE’s public note on eczema guideline CG57 says the evidence for complementary therapies, including herbal medicines, is weak. Neem is not listed there as a treatment. An itchy patch is a reason to use an emollient you already know, or to ask a pharmacist or GP. The NHS advice for head lice is wet combing with conditioner on days 1, 5, 9 and 13, then a check on day 17. NICE also discusses dimeticone and malathion. Fushi’s head-lice bullet is not in that list, and the file shows no medicine licence. A 50 ml oil at £9.98 does not replace the comb.

Which bottle if the job is skin

Choose Fushi for a 50 ml dark-glass bottle with a UK bottling claim and reviews about this oil’s smell. Ignore the lice line. Choose Daana for about 120 ml at a lower price per 100 ml, and ignore the scent field that says Coconut. Choose SVA only if you need the dropper and you have already discounted the review pool. Ourons 100 ml is the top pick on the best neem oil page for a first plain oil, and it is still a craft bottle. The buying guide holds the ingredient-line checks. None of these skin bottles is an authorised pesticide.

Common questions

Can I rub it on my scalp neat?
UK seller guidance from Absolute Aromas says not to use it undiluted, and to stay at or below 10% in another carrier after a patch test. A Daana reviewer who put the oil on neat said not to. The garlic smell will also sit in the hair, which Fushi buyers already report after washing. Start with a teaspoon-scale blend on a small patch of scalp, not a palmful of neat oil from a 500 ml bottle.
Why does my hair still smell?
Because unrefined neem oil smells of garlic and sulphur, and that smell is stubborn. One Fushi reviewer still noticed it after two washes. A deodorised oil would behave differently, and these titles are selling the crude oil. Plan the wash for an evening when you do not need to sit close to other people the next morning. If the smell is sour or like paint, the oil is oxidised and should not go on skin at all.
Will it clear eczema?
NICE does not list neem as an eczema treatment. The public CG57 guidance says evidence for complementary and herbal therapies is weak, and the BNF summary stays with emollients and topical corticosteroids. A marketplace bullet is not that guidance. Use an emollient suited to dry skin, and speak to a pharmacist or GP if the skin is broken, infected or not settling. Children need that caution even more than adults.
Is it an NHS head-lice treatment?
No. The NHS method is wet combing on days 1, 5, 9 and 13, with a check on day 17. NICE also discusses dimeticone and malathion. Fushi’s head-lice bullet is seller wording without a medicine licence in the file. A neem oil can sit in the bathroom and still leave the lice where they were. Buy a detection comb before you buy another 50 ml bottle.
Which bottle in the set is actually a skin oil?
Fushi 50 ml and Daana 120 ml have reviews about smell, texture and skin, which matches the way they are listed. SVA is listed for skin and has a dropper, with a review sample that wanders onto other oils. Ourons is a craft oil that also prints skin on the label. HJFRONGF, MadanWax and Bio Natural are too thinly reviewed to call a skin recommendation. Prices are the 21 October 2026 snapshot.
Can I use it in pregnancy or on a child?
We do not recommend that. The Neem Team says its oil is not recommended in pregnancy, and NICE tells people to be careful with herbal products on childhood eczema. These amazon reviews are not an infant or pregnancy study. Head lice in a child are a wet-combing job under the NHS page. If a child has swallowed the oil, contact NHS 111 or a doctor.
