How to choose pure neem oil in the UK

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are looking at cold-pressed bottles on amazon.co.uk, some with a USDA badge and some with a line about plants, and you want pure neem oil rather than a hair blend or an unauthorised pesticide. This page is the set of checks. The [neem oil comparison](/hub/pest-control/neem-oil) holds the nine bottles, with GBP prices saved on 21 October 2026. Separate a single seed oil from a blend, read a price per 100 ml, and see why a missing MAPP number matters. Products Compared read the UK listings and public sources, and did not run a lab test. What pure neem oil is

Pure neem oil, in this aisle, means cold-pressed seed oil from Azadirachta indica and very little else. It is a fixed oil. Fresh oil smells of garlic and sulphur, it clouds or sets in a cool UK room, and it sits on water. A hair blend or a dog shampoo is a different product. The word pure on a title is still a seller claim. Ourons 100 ml (B0811YYS44) is the clearest row: cold-pressed, bullets for soap, candles, crafts, hair and skin, £6.99, and 4.4 from 10,239 reviews. Organic Forest is the counter-example. One field says 100% neem, and the active-ingredients field lists essential oil, antioxidants, vitamin E and sage. Read that field before the star count. A solid bottle is covered in how to use neem oil.

Volume, origin and the organic line

Compare millilitres, not the words family size or trial. The unit price runs from £2.80 per 100 ml on the Ourons 500 ml to £39.90 per 100 ml on Bio Natural. The small bottle can look cheaper at the till and still be the expensive oil. On Ourons 100 ml a bullet says the seeds were pressed in India and the country field says United Kingdom. Fushi says a London workshop bottled it. The country line says who bottled the oil. It does not make the oil a UK pesticide. None of the nine files name the Soil Association. Organic Forest prints USDA Organic, a US mark, with no UK certifier.

The line that makes it a pesticide

The Health and Safety Executive says a product used to protect plants must be authorised before it is marketed or used. A MAPP number is the authorisation you would look up. None of these nine files print one. Azadirachtin A is approved in Great Britain until 31 August 2029. That date does not turn a cosmetic bottle into a legal spray. HSE has enforced against unauthorised neem products sold online. Ourons stays on soap, candles and crafts in the bullets, while UK reviews talk about aphids. Organic Forest, MadanWax and Bio Natural put plants or critters in the title or a bullet. That wording is an invitation, not a database entry. If the job is aphids, mites or fungus gnats, use neem oil for plants.

Reviews that do not match the bottle

Stars help when the text is about this oil. Ourons 100 ml has 10,239 reviews at 4.4, and the sampled lines name aphids, a jade plant and hellebores. The count is large, and the subject is often a garden use the listing does not authorise. The summary also notes leaf damage. SVA is 4.5 from 20,301 reviews, and sampled UK text mentions moringa, amla and black seed. You cannot read that total as descriptions of this neem bottle. Fushi and Daana talk about smell and skin. Prefer a review that names the smell, oil that set in the bottle, or a diluted use on skin.

Common questions

Is 100% pure the same as a pesticide?
100% pure claims that the bottle holds neem seed oil rather than a blend. A product used to protect plants needs an authorisation, and these files do not show a MAPP number. The Health and Safety Executive treats intended use as the point. Soap and candle bullets describe a craft oil. A plant bullet is a pesticide claim sitting on an unauthorised product, even when the oil is a single ingredient. Search the HSE amateur database for the exact product before you spray anything.
Does USDA Organic mean I can spray it in the UK?
USDA Organic is a United States organic mark. On Organic Forest it appears in the title, and the file does not name a UK certifier or a MAPP number. An organic mark, including Soil Association wording on some other oils outside this table, is not permission to protect plants. HSE authorisation is a product-by-product decision. Azadirachtin remaining approved as a substance until 31 August 2029 does not license this bottle for a rose or a houseplant.
Why does one field say United Kingdom and a bullet say India?
Amazon stores more than one origin line. On Ourons 100 ml the country field says United Kingdom and a bullet says the seeds were pressed in India. Fushi’s listing talks about bottling in London, which can describe the workshop while the seed origin sits elsewhere. Use the lines to see who bottled the oil, then judge the ingredient list, the millilitres and the reviews on their own.
What is a MAPP number and why is it missing?
A MAPP number identifies a plant-protection product authorised in the UK. You would use it to find that exact product on the HSE database. It is missing here because these listings are filed as oils for crafts, skin or hair, or they mention plants without showing an authorisation. That absence is the finding. If a seller later prints a number, search that number rather than the word neem.
Which reviews can I trust?
Trust text that describes this bottle: the garlic-sulphur smell, oil that set in a cool room, or a diluted use on skin. Treat SVA’s 20,301 reviews and Organic Forest’s mixed sample as weak evidence, because the sampled wording names other oils. Eleven reviews, or a missing star line, are too thin for a reputation. A comment that aphids died is not a UK efficacy test, and leaf damage is already noted on the Ourons summary.
