Mite spray comparison 2026

The best mite sprays, compared.

Top pick: Johnson's Anti-Mite Extra – Highest recorded stars, 4.5 from 81 reviews, for the caged-bird title only. Best value: Zero In 2 x 300 ml – Lowest kept price, about £6.99, for a small indoor job if the physical label matches. Updated 17.10.2026.

Shoppers looking for a mite spray on amazon.co.uk are rarely looking for the same animal. One listing is a liquid for dust mites in bedding. Another is sold for red spider mite on plants. A fourth is a pump whose title says caged birds. Several of the bedding cans also claim bed bugs. The useful question is whether the label matches that host, and whether an amateur authorisation can be checked. NHS guidance and UK start with covers and a 60°C wash. For glasshouse red spider mite, Royal Horticultural Society guidance puts humidity and predatory mites ahead of spraying only the top of a leaf. The [mite spray buying guide](/hub/pest-control/mite-spray/sub/mite-spray-buying-guide) separates the rows that cannot be swapped. A mite spray is a liquid sold to be sprayed at mites. It is not an ultrasonic plug-in and it is not a mattress cover.

The best mite sprays in detail

Johnson's Anti-Mite Extra

Rank 1

Johnson's Anti-Mite Extra

∼£12

Our view

Johnson's Anti-Mite Extra is a 150 ml pump listing for mites and lice on caged birds, priced at £11.50. Its 4.5 from 81 reviews is the highest star line in this comparison, which gives it the top score under the existing rating method. Reviewers describe use around hens, canaries and pigeons, but those accounts do not broaden the title's stated caged-bird use. The amazon file names neither an active ingredient nor an approval number, and its title says two sprays while the quantity field says one. There is also no populated brand field even though the product name includes Johnson's. Do not confuse it with another Johnson's mite product carrying a different veterinary identity and ingredients. It is the top pick only for the caged-bird row after you have checked the physical label; it is not a mattress, plant or poultry-house recommendation.

Pros

  • Highest recorded star rating in the set
  • Pump format described in reviews
  • Title clearly names caged birds as the host

Cons

  • No active ingredient or approval number in the file
  • Pack wording and quantity field conflict
  • Review uses extend beyond the title's stated host

Best for: Caged-bird keepers whose physical label confirms the species, mite and method.

Less suitable: Mattresses, plants, chicken housing, or use based only on reviewer anecdotes.

Common questions

What is it sold for?

The title says a caged-bird pump spray, 150 ml, two sprays, for mites and lice. The attribute table does not name an active.

Do reviewers use it on chickens?

Yes. Reviews describe hen houses, hens, canaries, pigeons, and a hedgehog. Those uses are review reports. The title says caged birds.

Is there a brand field?

No Brand Name line. The title prefix reads LEEWAY WOODWORK and the product name in the title is Johnson's Anti-Mite Extra.

Nettex Total Mite Kill 250 ml

Rank 2

Nettex Total Mite Kill 250 ml

∼£14

Our view

Nettex Total Mite Kill is a 250 ml spray listed for poultry red mite in chicken coops and animal housing, at £14.09. The bullets describe an oily residual for cracks, which fits the places red mites hide rather than a general bedroom treatment. It has 4.4 from 20 reviews, a strong star line based on the smallest rated sample in this set. Reviewers report repeated use through summer, and one repeats every three days, but that timing is not a label instruction in the file. Another reviewer says one can covers only a small coop, so 250 ml may be limiting before a full housing treatment is complete. No active ingredient, approval number or egg-withdrawal period is recorded, and the listed 1.65 kg weight looks inconsistent with a 250 ml can. It is a narrowly targeted coop option to investigate with a vet-led protocol, not evidence that it is suitable directly on laying hens.

Pros

  • Clearly aimed at poultry red mite
  • Oily residual is intended for coop cracks
  • 4.4-star line from the recorded reviews

Cons

  • Only 20 reviews and five texts in the file
  • No active, approval number or withdrawal period recorded
  • A reviewer says one can covers only a small coop

Best for: A small coop treatment when a vet-led protocol and the physical label support its use.

Less suitable: Direct use on birds without label authority, large houses, bedding or plants.

Common questions

Is it for chickens?

The title says poultry red mite. The bullets say it cleans a chicken coop and animal housing, and they claim mites, fleas, and lice.

How often do reviewers repeat it?

One reviewer repeats every 3 days and says it does not kill them all. Another uses regular squirts through the summer. A third says the can only covers a small coop.

Is an active named?

No. The file has no active and no approval number. The listed weight is 1.65 kg.

Zero In ZER968 twin

Rank 3

Zero In ZER968 twin

∼£11

Our view

The ZER968 twin supplies two 300 ml cans for £11 and is listed for bed bugs and dust mites around mattresses, frames, skirting and furnishings. Its strongest comparison signal is the 4.2 rating from 8,217 reviews, by far the largest review count among these eight listings. The bullets name cyphenothrin and prallethrin and claim more than two weeks of protection, but the file does not verify that duration. The listing describes the form both as a spray and as a 300 ml aerosol, so read the can rather than relying on the attribute wording. You should patch-test fabric first because the product information warns about staining. No HSE authorisation number is present in the file, and a large review count does not replace that check. It is the most established bedding aerosol listing here, but identified bed bugs still warrant professional advice because amateur pesticide alone is unlikely to clear them.

Pros

  • Largest review count in the comparison
  • Two 300 ml cans with named actives
  • Target areas include frames and skirting

Cons

  • No HSE authorisation number in the file
  • Duration is only a listing claim
  • Fabric needs a patch test

Best for: Indoor mattress and frame treatment where the ZER968 label confirms the pest and surface.

Less suitable: Plants, animal housing, or relying on one amateur treatment for an established bed-bug infestation.

Common questions

Does it name the actives?

The bullets name cyphenothrin and prallethrin. The saved listing has no HSE authorisation number.

How long is the protection claim?

More than two weeks. That figure is a listing bullet, not a measured result in the file.

Will it mark fabric?

The indoor bullet says test a small, inconspicuous area first so it does not stain mattresses or carpets.

Zero In 4 x 300 ml

Rank 4

Zero In 4 x 300 ml

∼£14

Our view

This Zero In four-pack provides 1,200 ml across four 300 ml aerosols for £14.49, aimed at bed bugs and dust mites indoors. The bullets name cyphenothrin and prallethrin and claim more than two weeks of protection, while the listing tells you to patch-test mattresses and carpets for staining. Its 4.1 rating from 169 reviews is similar to the cheaper twin pack rather than evidence that the larger pack performs differently. Quantity is clearer here than on the £6.99 listing because the pack size and unit count both resolve to four cans and 1,200 ml. The scent field says unscented but a bullet says floral, so anyone sensitive to fragrance should not assume there is no smell. No HSE number or pet instruction appears in the file. Buy this size only if the physical label suits the intended indoor job and you genuinely need four cans; it is poor value for a single small room.

Pros

  • Clear four-can, 1,200 ml pack
  • Named cyphenothrin and prallethrin
  • Lower unit cost than buying small packs repeatedly

Cons

  • No HSE number or pet instruction in the file
  • Unscented and floral descriptions conflict
  • Requires patch testing on fabric

Best for: A larger indoor treatment where four aerosol cans match the confirmed label directions.

Less suitable: A single small room, fragrance-sensitive users, plants or animal housing.

Common questions

Can it be used on every mattress?

The page asks that. The bullet says test a small area first so the spray does not stain mattresses or carpets. It does not say every mattress is suitable.

What is in the pack?

The size line says 300 ml, pack of 4. The unit count is 1,200 ml. The model is AMZ968X4.

Is a pet instruction printed?

The page asks. The bullets do not give a pet instruction, and the file has no HSE number.

Zero In 2 x 300 ml

Rank 5

Zero In 2 x 300 ml

Our view

The Zero In twin pack gives you two 300 ml aerosols for £6.99, aimed at bed bugs and dust mites on mattresses, frames and furnishings. Its bullets name cyphenothrin and prallethrin and claim protection for more than two weeks, although that duration is a seller claim rather than a measured result in this file. The listing is inconsistent about quantity: the title says 2 × 300 ml, while the liquid-volume field says 300 ml and reviews dispute an older 500 ml figure. At 4.1 from 133 reviews, it has a useful but much smaller review base than the ZER968 twin listing. You should patch-test an inconspicuous area because the listing warns that mattresses and carpets may stain. No HSE authorisation number appears in the file, so check the physical label before using it. It is the best-value pack in this comparison on the recorded price, provided the label matches your exact indoor job.

Pros

  • Lowest recorded price in the comparison
  • Two named active ingredients
  • Twin-pack title suits a small indoor treatment

Cons

  • Pack and volume fields do not agree
  • No HSE authorisation number in the file
  • Fabric needs a patch test

Best for: A small indoor bed-bug or dust-mite job where the physical label confirms the intended use.

Less suitable: Plants, poultry, cage birds, or anyone who needs an unambiguous pack quantity.

Common questions

How much liquid does the listing record?

The title says a multipack of 2×300 ml. The liquid-volume field says 300 ml, and the unit count is 1. Reviews say a 500 ml figure was wrong and 300 ml arrived.

Which actives do the bullets name?

Cyphenothrin and prallethrin. The saved listing has no HSE authorisation number.

Should you test the fabric first?

The indoor-use bullet says test a small area first so the spray does not stain mattresses or carpets.

Professional Strength 500 ml

Rank 6

Professional Strength 500 ml

∼£10

Our view

This 500 ml Professional Strength bottle is listed for dust mites on mattresses, pillows, duvets, rugs, curtains, carpets and upholstery at £9.99. The bullets claim an effect lasting up to six months, but the file provides no active ingredient, approval number or measured evidence for that period. Its 3.9 rating comes from 84 reviews, and those review texts are shared with the three-bottle listing rather than forming a separate sample. The scent information also conflicts: the field says unscented while a bullet says fresh cotton, and one reviewer notices a cosmetic smell. Some reviewers report mites moving after the liquid dried, so it should not be treated as a complete dust-mite plan. UK health guidance puts enclosing covers and washing bedding at 60°C ahead of acaricide sprays. Consider it only after checking the bottle label and whether spraying is appropriate for the room and its occupants.

Pros

  • 500 ml bottle at a lower price than the three-pack
  • Listing covers several types of soft furnishing
  • Single bottle limits commitment before repeat purchase

Cons

  • No active ingredient or approval number in the file
  • Six-month claim is not independently measured
  • Scent description conflicts

Best for: Someone comparing one bedding bottle after covers and hot washing have already been considered.

Less suitable: Children's play areas, pillows without label confirmation, respiratory concerns, plants or animal housing.

Common questions

The scent field says unscented. A bullet says fresh cotton. One reviewer mentions a cosmetic smell.

Professional Strength 3 x 500 ml

Rank 7

Professional Strength 3 x 500 ml

∼£22

Our view

The Professional Strength three-pack contains 1,500 ml across three 500 ml bottles for £21.99, for dust mites on mattresses and other soft furnishings. It carries the same 3.9 from 84 and the same 15 review texts as the single bottle, so the two listings do not provide independent evidence. The bullets claim up to six months of effect, but the file names no active ingredient or approval number and does not substantiate that duration. Although the scent field says unscented, another line says clean cotton, leaving fragrance unclear. The three-pack bullets omit pillows, even though pillows appear on the single-bottle listing, so you should not transfer directions between pack pages. Reviews include reports of mites moving after the product dried, and UK health guidance prioritises enclosing covers and a 60°C wash over acaricide sprays. This bulk pack only makes sense after one bottle's label and suitability have been checked; otherwise it multiplies the cost without resolving the evidence gaps.

Pros

  • Three bottles provide 1,500 ml
  • Lower recorded cost per 500 ml than the single
  • Listing names several soft-furnishing uses

Cons

  • Reviews are shared with the single bottle
  • No active ingredient or approval number in the file
  • Six-month and scent claims are not well supported

Best for: Repeat soft-furnishing use only after the single bottle's physical label has proved suitable.

Less suitable: A first trial, pillow use without explicit directions, respiratory concerns, plants or animal housing.

Common questions

Does this listing include pillows?

The page asks. The bullets list mattresses, duvets, rugs, curtains, carpets, and upholstered furniture. Pillows are not in those bullets.

No. The six-month line is a bullet. The file has no active and no approval number.

READY STEADY DEFEND 1 L plant soap

Rank 8

READY STEADY DEFEND 1 L plant soap

∼£15

Our view

READY STEADY DEFEND is the only plant-specific row here, supplying a listed 1 litre of soap spray for red spider mite and two-spotted spider mite at £14.99. Its bullets name potassium salts and soya oils and include houseplants, ornamentals, fruit and vegetables, but no MAPP number appears in the file. The item-form field says aerosol while reviewers describe a trigger or pump, and some review text refers to 500 ml beside this 1 litre listing. At 3.9 from 47 reviews, feedback is mixed: one cucumber grower reports improvement after reaching the leaf undersides, while others describe mites returning after the spray dried or plants continuing to decline. That pattern matters because a contact spray has to hit mites under the leaf and may need a label-led repeat. The “until harvest” wording is a seller bullet, not proof that use on an edible crop has been authorised. It is the relevant format for plants in this set, but you should verify a current MAPP number before buying or applying it.

Pros

  • Only plant-specific product in the comparison
  • One-litre listed volume
  • Potassium salts and soya oils are named

Cons

  • No MAPP number in the file
  • Aerosol field conflicts with trigger-bottle reviews
  • Some reviews refer to 500 ml rather than 1 litre

Best for: Plant growers who can verify the current UK authorisation and reach mites under the leaves.

Less suitable: Use on edible crops without a checked label, or any mattress, bird or poultry treatment.

How we compared

Eight mite sprays are on this page, drawn from a wider amazon.co.uk set. Each card score starts from the listing star rating, converted on a 0–100 scale and then shown from 1 to 10. That is not a laboratory result. The weights follow the buying order in the digest: host first, then whether an amateur authorisation can be checked, then duration bullets, eggs and allergen, then pack and price.

1

Host match

30%

Plant soap, bedding spray, poultry aerosol and a cage-bird pump are not substitutes. Bed bugs stay a different insect even when a title also says dust mite.

2

Label and authorisation

25%

The public may use only products meant for them, and only as the label says. Plants need a MAPP authorisation. A household insecticide needs a biocidal authorisation.

3

Duration claims

15%

More than two weeks, up to six months, and until harvest are seller bullets. NHS sources say no dust-mite spray clears a home.

4

Eggs and allergen

15%

Bird-mite and bed-bug eggs can need a second treatment after they hatch. House dust mite allergen sits in the droppings and dissolves in water.

5

Pack and price

15%

Kept shelf prices run from about £6.99 to about £21.99. No saved listing states a treated floor area, so pack size is matched to the job rather than to a coverage figure.

Mite spray buying guide

A mite spray only helps when the can, the host and the label are the same job. Price bands on amazon.co.uk run from about £6.99 to about £21.99, and a higher price does not change a poultry aerosol into a plant soap. Read the host, then the authorisation, then the duration bullet.

What is a mite spray?

A mite spray in this comparison is a liquid sold to be sprayed at mites. It is not an ultrasonic plug-in and it is not a mattress cover. On amazon.co.uk the same search mixes four jobs: dust mites in bedding, red spider mite on plants, poultry red mite, and mites on a cage bird. Several bedding cans also claim bed bugs. Quality is whether the label matches that job and whether an amateur authorisation can be checked. NHS and Allergy UK start with zip covers and a 60°C wash.

Best for

  • Households already using mite covers and a 60°C wash
  • Growers who can reach red spider mite under the leaves

Not ideal for

  • Anyone hoping one can will clear plants, beds and hens
  • Asthma or eczema that someone hopes a spray will treat

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

One product for every mite title

Plant soap, bedding spray, poultry aerosol and a cage-bird pump are different products. A dust-mite title that also says bed bugs does not make the can a bed-bug clearance plan.

  2. 2

Spraying only the top of the leaf

Red spider mite and two-spotted spider mite sit on the underside. A contact spray that misses that surface, or a single pass against eggs, leaves the infestation in place.

  3. 3

    Trusting a duration bullet

More than two weeks, up to six months, and until harvest are seller lines. None of these files prints an HSE number, a MAPP number or an egg-withdrawal period.

What to weigh up

Name the host

High

Plant soap, a bedding spray, a poultry aerosol and a cage-bird pump are different products. READY STEADY DEFEND, 1 litre at about £14.99, is the only plant listing. Bullets name potassium salts and soya oils for red spider mite, two-spotted spider mite, aphids and whiteflies. The item-form field says aerosol, while reviews describe a trigger, and some text mentions 500 ml beside this 1 litre listing. No MAPP number is in the file.

Read the label and the authorisation

High

The Health and Safety Executive says the public may use only products meant for them, and only as the label says. Plants need a MAPP authorisation. A household insecticide needs a biocidal authorisation. A product that claims both needs both. Great Britain uses GB BPR. Northern Ireland uses EU BPR. Physical-only devices sit outside biocides, so an ultrasonic plug-in is not a spray. None of these eight files prints an HSE number, a MAPP number or an egg-withdrawal period.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Dust-mite households

You have been told to cut house dust mite. Covers and a 60°C wash come before a can. If you still want an indoor aerosol with named actives on the bullets, the Zero In ZER968 twin is the listing with the largest review count, after the physical label confirms the pest and the surface.

Plant growers

Red spider mite and two-spotted spider mite sit on leaf undersides. READY STEADY DEFEND is the only plant row in this set. Humidity and predatory mites come first in RHS guidance, and the file has no MAPP number, so check a current authorisation before you spray.

Chicken keepers

Poultry red mite is a coop problem, not a bedroom problem. Nettex Total Mite Kill is the row aimed at that host. It needs a vet-led protocol and a physical label. It is not evidence for spraying laying hens, and it is not a mattress product.

Common questions about mite sprays

Which mite spray is the top pick in 2026?
Johnson's Anti-Mite Extra, about £11.50 for a 150 ml title, is the top pick because 4.5 from 81 reviews is the highest star line here. That figure is a star conversion, not a laboratory result. The title names caged birds. It is not a winner for mattresses, plants or a poultry house. The amazon file names no active and no approval number, so read the physical label before use.
How much does a mite spray cost?
Kept amazon.co.uk prices run from about £6.99 to about £21.99. The lower band is the Zero In 2 × 300 ml pack at about £6.99, Professional Strength 500 ml at about £9.99, the Zero In ZER968 twin at about £11, and Johnson's at about £11.50. Around £14 to £15 you will see Nettex, the Zero In four-pack and the 1 litre plant soap. The three-bottle pack is about £21.99. Price does not tell you which mite the can is for.
What should you check before buying a mite spray?
Name the host first. Plant soap, a bedding spray, a poultry aerosol and a cage-bird pump are not substitutes. Bed bugs are a different insect even when the title also says dust mite. The Health and Safety Executive says the public may use only products meant for them, and only as the label says. Plants need a MAPP authorisation. A household insecticide needs a biocidal authorisation. None of these eight files prints an HSE number or a MAPP number.
Do dust-mite sprays replace covers and a hot wash?
No. Cambridge University Hospitals and Allergy UK start with allergen-proof covers and washing bedding at 60°C. Cambridge University Hospitals does not recommend acaricide sprays. Allergy UK says the allergen is in the droppings and dissolves in water, and it advises care with carpet sprays, and not on pillows, soft toys or where children play. A can is not a plan for clearing house dust mite from a whole home.
Can one mite spray treat plants, beds and hens?
No. READY STEADY DEFEND is the only plant row, and the file has no MAPP number. Nettex is listed for poultry red mite, not for a bedroom. Johnson's title says caged birds, and it is a different product from Johnson's Anti-Mite and Insect Spray, Vm 01759/5003. Zero In bullets name cyphenothrin and prallethrin for indoor bed bugs and dust mites. Do not move a household pyrethroid onto laying hens.
When should you call a pest controller?
Call a professional for identified bed bugs, bites after a roof nest, pale combs or blood-spotted eggs, and asthma or eczema that someone hopes a spray will treat. The British Pest Control Association says amateur pesticide is unlikely to clear bed bugs, and that a bird source should be removed first. Do not destroy a nest that is in use in England. A different indoor insect spray is the silverfish spray comparison.
Were the two-week and six-month claims measured?
No. Zero In says more than two weeks. Professional Strength says up to six months. The plant listing says reapply as needed and until harvest. Those lines are seller bullets. NHS sources say no dust-mite spray clears a home. Cyphenothrin is an approved biocidal active until 31 January 2030, which does not authorise any Zero In can in this file. Do not treat a 2024 EU prallethrin approval as Great Britain law.
Is an ultrasonic plug-in a mite spray?
No. A mite spray here is a liquid sold to be sprayed at mites. Physical-only products sit outside biocides, so an ultrasonic plug-in is not this category. Great Britain uses GB BPR and Northern Ireland uses EU BPR. For house dust mite, start with covers and a 60°C wash. For red spider mite, Royal Horticultural Society guidance puts humidity and predatory mites ahead of spraying only the top of the leaf.

Our verdict

These eight listings do not share one job. Johnson's Anti-Mite Extra is the top pick only for the caged-bird title, because 4.5 from 81 reviews is the highest star line under this conversion. The Zero In 2 × 300 ml pack is the best value at about £6.99, with the pack-quantity conflict and the missing authorisation number still on the card. Plants, poultry and bedding each need their own label.
