Pigeon deterrent buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have white streaks on a sill, a gate or the rail outside the kitchen, and the amazon.co.uk results mix stainless rows, plastic owls, pinwheels and boxes that claim to upset birds with sound. A pigeon deterrent buying guide has one job before any model is named: match the place. A narrow perch, a void, a lawn and a fence top are four different purchases. This page uses the twelve listings in the [pigeon deterrent comparison](/hub/pest-control/pigeon-deterrent), with shelf prices from 19 October 2026. It is not a lab test. Start with the place, not the gadget

Exclusion means the bird cannot land. Scaring means you hope it stays away for a while. GOV.UK lists scare devices, removing food, netting and physical barriers among non-lethal methods that do not need a licence. A feral pigeon on a sill, a gate cap or a handrail needs a continuous spike row. A recess or a light well is a void, and netting is not one of these twelve listings. WML-GU01 says mesh for pigeons should not exceed 50 mm. A lawn is an area a decoy can only buy days on, because pigeons adapt to scaring. A fence where cats walk the top is a different product. Rows against scares are on pigeon spikes vs a fake owl.

What each type in this comparison can do

Ledge spikes block the perch. Remiawy is five 304 stainless strips, about 1.2 m together and stated 101 mm deep, at £7.78, rated 4.4 from 1,714 reviews. Apluskis is PP plastic at £17.85, rated 4.3 from 1,456 reviews, with about 6 m claimed in the title. Neither closes a void. EarlyGrow is ten pieces of 50 cm at £6.95, with spikes 1.8 cm high and reviews that are mostly cats. Natural Resources Wales treats visual scaring as variable. Which row to buy is on best pigeon spikes.

Price bands on amazon.co.uk

On 19 October 2026 this basket runs up to the kite at £38.59 and the ISOTRONIC pair at £41.01. A higher price does not mean a stronger method. The dearest pigeon-named box is the ultrasonic pair, with the weakest stars. About a metre of stainless is £7.78. The claimed 6 m is £17.85.

Food, nests and when DIY stops

Bins, scraps and a neighbour feeding birds will refill a ledge you have just cleared. Close the waste, then proof the perch. You must not damage a nest in use, and feral pigeons can breed outside spring. Stop when the run is above a safe ladder, the stone is listed, or birds are trapped in old netting. The flat version is the pigeon deterrent for a balcony. Fitting starts after the nest check, on how to fit pigeon spikes.

Common questions

Should I buy spikes, netting or a decoy for pigeons?
Buy spikes when the bird stands on a narrow sill, rail or gate and you can cover the whole length. Buy netting when birds fly into a recess, with mesh that does not exceed 50 mm, and only if you can check it. Buy a decoy as a short trial on a lawn you will move. An ultrasonic box is a separate class, and the 6,144 reviews on the ISOTRONIC pair do not support it for a sill.
Do I need a licence to fit pigeon spikes?
Ordinary non-lethal proofing does not need a licence. GOV.UK lists physical barriers among methods you can use without one. You still must not damage a nest in use, or take eggs, under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Lethal licences differ between England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. They are not the reason to choose a strip.
Will an ultrasonic unit keep pigeons off a sill?
Leave it for that job. ISOTRONIC 70625 is £41.01 and rated 2.6 from 6,144 reviews. The listing describes a flashing light and pigeons sitting on the unit. Natural Resources Wales does not treat ultrasound as effective against birds. SLAJMNZH’s 5.0 is two reviews, and its band starts at 8 kHz. If the bird is standing on the sill, cover the sill.
Are short fence spikes the same as pigeon ledge spikes?
They are a different product. EarlyGrow strips are 50 cm long with spikes 1.8 cm high, at £6.95 with 4.3 from 1,980 reviews, sold against cats and foxes as well as birds. Remiawy’s strips are given as 101 mm deep. The fence product can be right where a cat walks a wall. Rank 1 in Bird Control does not change the height of the points.
What if the birds are wood pigeons on vegetables?
They are feeding across an area. A spike row on the fence leaves the leaves open. Netting the crop, or a decoy you move, matches a bed. Feral pigeons on a rail are a perch problem, and the stainless or long plastic ledge spikes match that perch. A 4 m hawk kite needs open air and is a poor fit for a courtyard bed.
When should I stop and call a pest controller?
Call when you cannot reach the whole run from a safe ladder, when the building is listed, when only netting will close a high void, or when birds are trapped. The Association describes that proofing as specialist work. A gate or a sill you can clean from the ground is still a household job, after a nest check. Screws are not in the Remiawy or EarlyGrow box.
