You have a strip in the hallway, or you are about to order one, and the last attempt left a clean metre in the middle with pigeons on both corners. How to fit pigeon spikes is mostly a continuous run on a clean, sound surface. Check the nest and clean the ledge

If birds are building or sitting a nest, stop. Damaging a nest in use, or taking eggs, is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. The RSPCA notes that feral pigeons can breed beyond spring. Dampen droppings, wear gloves, and bag the waste. The ledge then has to be dry and sound. Measure the whole run, including each return. Remiawy is about 1.2 m and Apluskis claims about 6 m.

Screw, tie or glue

Remiawy’s base is pre-drilled for zip ties, screws or nails, and screws are not in the box. Push the plates on the right way up. If the stone is wider than the 101 mm depth, add a parallel row. Apluskis lists screws, tape or zip ties. A UK review could not stick these strips to a butyl roof. EarlyGrow recommends screws, and glue only where screws will not go. Windows, gaps and tips

Do not glue a row in front of a casement that has to open. PestFix and EnviroGuard both say this. Ordinary screws can crack uPVC. Butt the strips at corners, downpipes and the end of a pier. A 5 cm gap is a perch. Natural Resources Wales says sharpened tips are not the UK form. The RSPCA rejects spikes meant to impale. If birds still land next week, walk the run. When you should not be on the ladder

If you cannot reach every centimetre from a ladder you would trust for gutter cleaning, call a proofing firm. A strip you cannot inspect will shed. Listed stone and a landlord’s facade need permission before you drill. A flat has the extra limits on the pigeon deterrent for a balcony. Old netting with a bird caught in it is a rescue: in England and Wales call 0300 1234 999. Fit the whole length in one go once the nest is clear.

Common questions

Do I screw or glue pigeon spikes?
Screw or tie them when the listing allows it and the edge is sound. Remiawy is pre-drilled for ties, screws or nails. Apluskis allows screws, tape or ties. EarlyGrow prefers screws and mentions glue only where screws will not go. Glue is the fallback on a clean, compatible surface, with a one-section test if the plastic is polypropylene. Screws are not in the Remiawy or EarlyGrow box.
What has to happen before I fix the first strip?
Confirm there is no nest in use, dampen and bag the droppings with gloves on, and make the ledge dry and sound. Then measure the full run, including returns. Remiawy is about 1.2 m, Apluskis claims about 6 m, and EarlyGrow is 5 m of 50 cm pieces. Fixing a short sample in the middle of a dirty sill is the mistake reviews describe as birds that still sit.
Can I glue them in front of a window that opens?
Leave that sill clear. PestFix and EnviroGuard both say not to glue spikes across an opening casement. The sash will hit the points, or you will stop using the window. Birds on the frame need a trade clip, and those clips are not in these cartons. On uPVC, do not drive ordinary screws into the frame and hope the drainage survives.
Why do pigeons still land after I fitted spikes?
Walk the corners, the downpipe and the pier. A gap of a few centimetres is enough. Also check for a peeled strip, plates fitted the wrong way, and a ledge wider than one row. Trade guides add a parallel row for width. A plastic owl does not repair a gap. If the birds fly into a recess, you needed netting, which these boxes do not include.
Are very sharp spikes allowed?
Natural Resources Wales says sharpened tips are not the UK form, and square-cut tips are what its fact sheet allows. The RSPCA wants an uncomfortable perch, not impalement. If the tips are needle-sharp, do not fit them below about 2 m where someone could fall on them. The tips in these three listings have not been certified here. The check is the packet in your hand.
What if the ledge is higher than I can reach safely?
Stop. If a normal ladder will not put you safely along the whole run, the job belongs to a proofing firm. Listed stone and a landlord’s wall also need permission before any hole, even when the ladder would reach. A strip you cannot check will come loose, and the untreated end becomes the new perch.
Are screws in the Remiawy or EarlyGrow box?
No. Remiawy is pre-drilled and you supply ties, screws or nails. EarlyGrow says screws are recommended and not included, and it does include two warning signs. Apluskis names screws, tape or ties and does not promise a full fixing kit either. Add fixings matched to timber, metal or masonry when you order the strips.
