Ant spray vs ant bait

Updated: 22 October 2026

Ant spray vs ant bait is the choice between killing the insects you can see and giving workers something they carry home. Use a spray when you need those ants off a hard surface today. Use a bait when the job is the colony and you will leave the ants on the gel. Both on the same trail blocks the bait. The [Ant spray](/hub/pest-control/ant-spray) comparison is the sprays. This page does not review bait products. Peter F., editor for DIY & tools at productscompared.co.uk, did not run a laboratory test. What a spray is built to do

A ready-to-use ant spray is a contact insecticide, sometimes with a residue, for skirtings, frames, cracks, and patio edges the label allows. The ants that cross the band die. That clears a floor you need to walk. It is a poor description of colony control. BPCA treats a general spray as a knockdown the colony can replace. Waltham Forest's garden-ant sheet says ants may keep crossing a sprayed edge for days, so the next morning often means more workers. In this set only Deadfast's listing prints a nest-transfer claim. Dethlac's carry-back line lives on the maker's FAQ, not in the Amazon field.

What a bait is built to do

A bait is food the workers collect and share. The insect has to live long enough to get home. BPCA prefers bait when the aim is the colony, and the wait is days to weeks. Do not put a pyrethroid spray on the same skirting. Waltham Forest says sprays on the baited run kill the ant before it carries the bait. If you have already sprayed, use bait only on a fresh trail. This page does not review bait products and does not call bait non-toxic. The spray remains the tool when you need knockdown today and accept that the nest may still be under the patio.

The one spray that claims the nest

Deadfast is the exception inside this spray category, and only on its own timing. The saved listing names lambda-cyhalothrin and says workers carry micro-capsules to the nest. Garden Health's page puts the nest effect at two to three weeks and tells you not to clean the band while pests remain. Ants dead in a minute are the contact kill. About 10 ml along one metre is that maker's dose, not a dose for Raid or Doff. Spraying Deadfast over a gel you laid this morning cancels the bait. A printed nest claim is not an identification of the species.

When neither DIY spray nor a shop bait is enough

Pharaoh ants and ghost ants are the point where both DIY routes go wrong. They are small, they favour warm buildings, and colonies split when a repellent insecticide hits the trail. BPCA calls spraying those trails counterproductive. Call a BPCA member if the ants are tiny and the flat is warm all year, if numbers stay high after a label-rate treatment, or if the nest is inside a wall. Black garden ants from a patio slab remain the amateur case: spray for the surface today, bait for the colony over the following weeks, never both on the same run.

Common questions

Will any ant spray kill the nest?
No. A typical spray knocks down the foragers that cross it. BPCA describes that as a knockdown the colony can replace. In these five listings only Deadfast states a nest effect, and the maker's timing is two to three weeks. Dethlac's carry-back line lives on the maker's FAQ, not in the Amazon nest field.
I sprayed yesterday and they are back. Did I buy a fake?
Not from that fact alone. Garden ants often keep crossing a sprayed edge for days, and the nest can send more workers after a knockdown. A fake is the wrong conclusion if you mopped the band, sprayed into the air, or laid the spray on top of bait. Check the label rate and the place of use.
Can I put gel down and spray the same skirting?
No. The ant has to live long enough to carry bait home. A pyrethroid spray on that run kills or repels the courier. Waltham Forest and BPCA-based advice both say not to combine them. If the skirting is already wet from a can, do not add gel there.
When is a spray the right tool anyway?
Use a spray when you need the ants off a hard surface today and the label allows that surface. A trail across the kitchen floor before visitors arrive is that job. Use a bait when the nest is the target and you will leave the workers on the gel for days to weeks. One method on the run, not both.
What if the ants are tiny and the flat is always warm?
Stop and get them identified. Pharaoh and ghost ants in heated buildings are a BPCA-member job. Spraying a repellent pyrethroid on those trails can split the colony into more nests. A shop bait placed without a species check is not a safe fallback.
Does Deadfast's nest sentence make bait unnecessary?
No. It makes Deadfast the only spray in this set with a printed nest-transfer claim, on a two-to-three-week clock, if you leave the band uncleaned. It does not empty the nest in an hour. If you would rather use a food the colony shares, use bait and do not spray that trail.
