Ant spray in the kitchen with pets

Updated: 22 October 2026

An ant spray in a kitchen with pets is a limits problem, not a search for the cheapest bottle. You need to know which surfaces are banned, when the dog can walk back in, and why a pet-safe bullet is not an answer the listing left blank. The [Ant spray](/hub/pest-control/ant-spray) comparison holds the five products. This page does not rank a winner. Food surfaces are off the list

Do not spray food, utensils, pet bowls, or the surfaces where food is prepared. A contact kill on the crumbs is not a reason to wet the board. Move the food, wipe the spill, and put the spray on the skirting, the bin edge, or the door frame if the label allows those hard surfaces. Dethlac's FAQ allows kitchen use on firm surfaces and rules out food-preparation surfaces. Doff's own product page says the same about food-contact surfaces. Those are maker texts. The saved Amazon listing for Doff does not print them, so the bottle wins if it is stricter. HSE says follow the label and keep the pack away from children and pets. If the ants are only on the chopping board, treat the entry, then wash the board with washing-up, not insecticide.

Children, pets, and fish

Keep children and pets out while the film is wet, and keep them off pet bedding. Dry time is the re-entry rule these UK texts share. It is not a promise that the dry film is harmless. HSE tells authorisation holders not to call a biocide non-toxic, harmless, or natural. Dethlac's FAQ says children and pets stay away until dry. These sprays are very toxic to aquatic life. Cover tanks, and Tesco's text for a 300 ml Raid can says to switch off the air pump. Do not spray towards the water or tip leftover product down the sink. Pet and child questions are unanswered for Doff, Deadfast, and both Raid packs. Dethlac's bullets say pet safe and still leave the pet question blank. An unanswered question is a gap.

Smell in a small kitchen

A strong smell in the reviews is a limit on the room, not a hint to spray food more lightly. Deadfast and Raid reviewers describe a heavy odour indoors. One Doff reviewer reported sneezing for about two hours in a confined space. Open the window, leave, and come back when the surface is dry and the air has cleared. If the room is a small galley with no through-draught, that pattern is a reason to reconsider an aerosol there.

Indoor-only cans

Raid's six-pack title says indoor use. That pack is the indoor aerosol in this set, at £21.09 for six 300 ml cans. Tesco's separate 300 ml page adds indoor only, no soft furnishings, ventilate, keep off until dry, cover aquaria, and a bat warning under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, with cypermethrin 0.092% and imiprothrin 0.092%. The twin-pack listing does not print those lines. Do not take the indoor six-pack onto the patio. Soft furnishings and pet beds stay unsprayed. If the ants are still there the next day, bait used away from this spray, or a professional, is the next tool.

Common questions

Can I spray the worktop where I chop food?
No. Food, utensils, and food-contact surfaces are off the list. Dethlac's FAQ and Doff's product page both exclude food-preparation surfaces. Treat the skirting or the entry the label allows, clear the crumbs, and wash the board as you normally would. A shorter burst on the chopping board is still insecticide on a food surface.
How long until the dog can walk on the floor?
When the treated surface is dry, and only if the label allows that floor. Keep the dog out of the room while you spray and while the film is wet. Pet bedding is not a surface to treat. Dry time is the re-entry line in the UK texts used here.
The bullet says pet safe. Can the cat stay in the kitchen?
No. Dethlac's bullets say pet safe, and the same listing does not answer the pet question separately. The maker's FAQ still says children and pets stay away until dry, and it excludes pet beds. HSE does not allow harmless-style claims on a biocidal label. The cat leaves the room. The bullet is not permission to spray with the animal present.
Is the red Raid can only for indoors?
The six-pack title says indoor use. Tesco's 300 ml page, a different retailer text, says indoor only, no soft furnishings, and a bat warning. The twin pack's saved Amazon listing does not print that indoor line or the active. Do not carry the indoor six-pack outside to chase the same trail onto the patio. Ventilate, and cover a fish tank in the room.
What about the fish tank on the sideboard?
Cover the tank and switch off the pump before you use an aerosol in that room. Tesco's Raid text says so, and Dethlac's FAQ says the product is toxic to fish and tanks should be covered. Do not spray towards the water or rinse the can into the sink. These products are very toxic to aquatic life even when the ants are only by the bin.
Why does the spray smell so strong if it is for a kitchen?
Reviewers of Deadfast and Raid describe a strong indoor smell, and one Doff review describes sneezing for about two hours in a small space. The smell is a reason to ventilate and leave until the surface is dry. It is not evidence you should spray the food surface more gently. If the room cannot be cleared and aired, an aerosol in that kitchen is a poor fit.
