How to use an ultrasonic fogger

Updated: October 2026

You have a ceramic disc, a bowl or a pond, and a mains adapter, and the cloud is either missing or spitting across the table. How to use an ultrasonic fogger, in this set, is mostly the water depth that listing actually states, a dry transformer, and the habit of unplugging before your hand goes in. The [ultrasonic fogger comparison](/hub/pest-control/ultrasonic-fogger) is the twelve amazon.co.uk listings behind these steps. Products Compared did not run the units in a lab. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Which ASIN to buy stays on the [best ultrasonic fogger](/hub/pest-control/ultrasonic-fogger/sub/ultrasonic-fogger-best) page.

Set it up before you care about the cloud

Start with a container you already trust, not with the colour of the LEDs. Most of these heads do not include a pot. A MOXTOYU review says you supply the container. BrightArk is the exception: a 20 cm cauldron is in that box. Fit the splash guard if the listing gave you one, and fit the float if the water is deeper than a bowl. Outdoors, plug into a socket that already has a 30 mA RCD. A new fixed outdoor circuit can fall under Part P, and that job is an electrician. Put the mains block on a dry surface before you add water. The first check is a fine cloud, not a spray. Nothing in the reservoir should be an insecticide. That limit is the versus an insect fogger page.

Depth is a listing figure, not a single number

GlintBay’s bullet says keep the fogger 3–5 cm above water level. Aobiforu says a container lower than 30 cm may splash. MUALROUS says 6–7 cm on the board, and the buoy if the water is deeper than 7 cm. The £129 Mxmoonant says use the float for depths over 8 cm. If your listing is silent on depth, cover the disc by a few centimetres, watch for spit, and stop.

Water, scale, and the disc

Use clean water. Scale on the ceramic is a common reason a disc goes quiet. Do not add glycol, dye, or insecticide. The machine is built to lift water. When the mist thins, the disc is the consumable. Unplug first. Listings with a key, such as the Mxmoonant kits, expect you to undo the ring. Yosoo-style spare notes say the white side faces up. Mxmoonant buyers said the paper was not enough to see how the three 20 mm discs fitted. Wandou’s kit bullet does not include spares.

Leave the transformer on the dry side

The part that fails in the Wandou reviews is often the supply, not the cloud. Texts describe units that die after days or months, and supplies that run hot. A 24 V head does not make the water safe to touch, and it does not make the adapter a pond object. MUALROUS marks its 400 W supply IP67 and then says do not immerse it. The £129 Mxmoonant says the IP67 transformer is not submersible, while the board is described as IP68. Rengue’s file has an IP67 supply and no immersion warning, which is a gap, not a permission to sink it. The £129 Mxmoonant bullet says continuous operation should not exceed 6 hours. MUALROUS has a one-hour figure in an attribute and does not repeat it in the bullet. Follow the bullet on the ASIN you own. If the block is too hot to rest a hand near, unplug it. Pond placement is on the ultrasonic pond fogger page.

When to stop

Stop when it spits, when a light only flashes, or when the supply runs hot. On Wandou and on MOXTOYU, reviewers reported a shock with a hand in the water while the unit was on. Unplug before you top up, before you lift the head, and before you change a disc. If an RCD will not reset, or if you have already had a shock, that is an electrician. A flashing light and no mist, after the depth that listing states, is a fault. It is not a prompt to add a chemical to the water.

Common questions

Why does it spit instead of mist?
The water is usually too shallow, the guard is off, or the head is drifting. Clean the disc with the unit unplugged. Do not keep it running in the hope that the spit becomes mist.
Can I put my hand in to top it up while it is on?
No. Unplug it first. Two UK reviews, on Wandou and MOXTOYU, describe a shock with a hand in the water while the unit was running. A 24 V head is not a promise that the water is safe to touch.
How do I change the ceramic disc?
Unplug the adapter. Undo the ring with the key if your kit has one, and fit the new disc white side up if you are following a Yosoo-style spare. If the listing included no spares, buy a disc that fits that head.
What water should I use?
Clean water, without bleach, glycol, dye, or insecticide. Scale is what you are trying to avoid. Vinegar on the ceramic is what House of Hydro tells its own buyers, and then you rinse and dry the spring under the disc. These amazon.co.uk listings do not publish a water recipe. They also do not authorise anything but water in the tank.
The light flashes and there is no mist. What now?
Unplug, check the depth against that listing, and clean the disc. If it still only flashes, or it only runs with the plug half in, stop testing it. That is a return or a dead supply, not a reason to put your hand in the water.
