How to use bed bug spray

Updated: 22 October 2026

The can is on the side, the bed is stripped, and you are about to spray the frame before anyone sleeps there again. How to use bed bug spray, for the household products in this set, is a sequence: laundry first, people and pets out, a light pass on the surfaces the label names, then a long gap before you vacuum. The [Bed bug spray](/hub/pest-control/bed-bug-spray) table is the product choice. This page is the order of work. Prices are the saved amazon.co.uk listings of 20 October 2026. Peter F., editor for DIY & tools at productscompared.co.uk, did not run a lab test, and this is not a dose. A purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. The label you received overrides a general description.

When a spray sequence is the right job

Use this sequence for one room you can leave, after travel or a second-hand bed, with a general-public product whose label you have read. The Health and Safety Executive says you use only biocides meant for the public and you follow that label. The NHS says a do-it-yourself treatment is unlikely to finish an infestation. If the insects are in more than one room, or if nobody can go elsewhere while the spray dries, stop and contact the council or a pest controller. The products differ, so the sequence is not one set of minutes for every ASIN. Zero In aerosols claim protection for over two weeks and tell you to spot-test. NOPE!, the 500 ml water-based trigger at £13.99, claims up to three months. Pestshield's card does not state a residual time at all. You do not invent a dry time the listing left blank. You keep people and pets out until the surfaces are dry.

Laundry and the room before you spray

Take the bedding off before any insecticide goes near the bed. The NHS says wash bedding at 60°C and tumble dry on hot for at least 30 minutes. Sheets, pillowcases and duvet covers are that load. Pillows are asked on a Zero In page and not answered. Unwashable items can be bagged and frozen. The NHS interval is two to three weeks. The BPCA has cited at least three days in a freezer. Do not average them. Vacuum first, before any spray, so you are not sucking wet residue an hour later. Move pets, fish tanks, and food. Cypermethrin, the active named on NOPE!, is very toxic to aquatic life. None of these listings answers safe for pets. Take animals out until the spray is dry and the room has been aired. Spot-test a hidden patch when the Zero In label tells you to. The bed bug spray for mattress page stays on the bed itself.

Spray, leave, and leave the residue

Work the places bed bugs use: mattress seams and the underside edge, the frame joints, the headboard, the skirting, and the carpet beside the bed. A pass across the middle of the mattress only is the error that wastes the can. You still follow the pack's own rate if it prints one. This page does not invent millilitres per metre.

When to stop using the can

Stop if a bug you soaked is still moving hours later and the same thing happens on the next pass. That report exists for the two-pack, for NOPE!, and for Pestshield. The BPCA has described pyrethroid resistance as widespread. Another can of a related pyrethroid is not a new method. One Pestshield buyer went through 12 cans and then paid a professional. Stop if bites continue after you have checked again a week or more later, or if you find insects in a second room. Amateur treatment can move bed bugs rather than finish them.

Common questions

How long must I stay out of the room?
Until the spray is dry and you can breathe normally. These listings share no minute count. Zero In reviews describe choking fumes, and one buyer who is home all day could not use the three-pack. If you cannot leave, do not start. Your bottle's label overrides this page.
Can I spray sheets and pillows?
Wash sheets, pillowcases and duvet covers at 60°C and tumble dry on hot for at least 30 minutes. That is NHS advice. Spray the mattress, frame and skirtings the listing names. A pillow question on a Zero In page is unanswered.
When can I vacuum the carpet?
Not the same day. Vacuuming soon strips the residue. Medway Council says at least 15 days. The BPCA says at least two weeks. If your council or the label is stricter, follow that. Vacuum before you spray, not straight after.
Why am I still getting bitten?
Eggs can hatch in about a week, and spraying only the mattress top misses the joints. Reviews include bugs alive after a direct spray. The BPCA describes pyrethroid resistance as widespread. A positive second check, a week or more later, is a reason to get help.
Will one bottle clear a flat?
No. A can covers surfaces in a room you can leave. The BPCA warns that amateur spraying can spread bed bugs. One buyer used 12 Pestshield cans, then paid a professional. A second room needs the council or a pest controller.
