Ants in the kitchen: use a bait station safely

Updated: October 2026

A line of ants runs from the skirting board to a drop of jam beside the toaster. For ordinary black garden ants, the first response is to remove accessible food and place a permitted indoor bait station on the route, not on the chopping board. This guide explains how to manage ants in the kitchen with a bait station while protecting food, children and pets. You can compare the current station packs on our main [ant poison page](/hub/pest-control/ant-poison). If the insects are tiny, pale or spread through a permanently warm block, stop before treating: they may not be the usual garden ant.

Recognise the usual kitchen ant

The common household visitor in Britain is the black garden ant, Lasius niger. Workers are glossy dark ants, commonly around 3–5 mm long, and they often form a route to sugar or sweet liquid in warmer months. The kitchen is a feeding destination, not the whole nest. Remove the reward first. Seal sugar, cereal and pet food, clear toaster crumbs and throw away food the insects have contacted. In a food business, contaminated food requires the business's food-safety procedure, not a domestic tidy-up. Avoid drenching the route with bleach or insecticidal cleaner immediately before baiting. A strong residue can divert the trail or kill workers before they carry bait away. For the method trade-off, read ant bait stations versus spray.

Where the station goes

The station belongs on or beside the workers' route, in a stable position the physical label allows. A floor edge behind a plinth or a protected gap near the entry point may work. A chopping board, a worktop beside uncovered food, a cutlery drawer or a shelf of packets does not. Food Standards Agency business guidance says bait and spray must not contact food, packaging or food-contact surfaces. Activate the station before you place it. Nippon-style cases may need lugs snapped. The Ferris four-pack says press the centre until it clicks. If the access point stays sealed, ants can walk around a station that looks ready. Our guide to using ant bait stations covers these differences. Do not squeeze liquid onto the skirting board. Leave feeding workers alone. More activity on day one can mean they have found the bait, and no listing here supports a guaranteed overnight result.

Cats, children and the phrase pet safe

Some retailer titles use pet safe without defining the conditions. In this set, beedopure and Jawell listings use that wording while their bullets do not explain it or name the active. UK biocide advertising rules do not allow animal friendly or harmless to replace safety information. A reassuring title is not permission to leave a station beside a feeding bowl. Choose a spot that ants can reach and children and pets cannot. A fixed void may work; a station loose under a rug does not. The Jeweeio 12-pack says keep the stations out of reach of children and pets, which is more concrete than an unexplained pet-safe title. If the route cannot be separated from a child's play area or a pet's food, do not force the product into that setting. Our ant bait station buying guide explains why a keep-out-of-reach line is more useful than an unsupported slogan.

When the kitchen is the wrong DIY job

Very small yellowish or pale ants in a warm block of flats may be pharaoh ants. They can live inside heated buildings and spread between units. Spraying can trigger budding, in which parts of a colony split and establish elsewhere. Stop retail experimentation, notify the landlord or managing agent and use a BPCA- or NPTA-member professional. A café kitchen falls outside this domestic method. Food businesses must follow their food-safety system, discard contaminated food and use competent pest control where needed. Even for ordinary black ants, call for help when the route persists after correct label use, or when the nest appears shared with another property.

Common questions

Why are ants appearing on the worktop?
Workers are usually following food odours and an established route from an outdoor or structural nest. Remove exposed sweet food, clean contaminated preparation areas and trace the line back towards an edge or entry point. Put any bait on a permitted protected route, never beside uncovered food.
Can I put a bait station next to the sugar jar?
Move and seal the sugar instead. A station should not contact food, packaging, utensils or a food-preparation surface. Place it on the ant route in a stable, inaccessible position permitted by its label. If that separation is impossible, use hygiene and exclusion while seeking safer advice.
Are black garden ants dangerous in a kitchen?
They are commonly treated as a nuisance in homes, but insects can contaminate food and surfaces. Throw away food they have contacted and clean preparation areas. Do not use the lower domestic risk to relax hygiene in a café, bakery or other food business.
Should I clean the ant trail with bleach first?
Clean food-contact areas, but do not combine a freshly treated insecticidal or strongly repellent route with bait. Remove the food source and follow the bait label. If residual spray has already been used, check its cleaning and persistence directions before deciding where or when bait can be placed.
Is a pet-safe title enough for a home with a cat?
No. It does not explain dose, access conditions or the active substance. Keep every station physically out of reach and inspect it for movement or leakage. If the ant route is also the cat's route, choose another protected position or seek professional advice.
What if the ants are tiny and pale?
In a permanently warm building, that description raises concern about pharaoh ants. Do not spray or treat flats independently, because disturbance can spread the colonies. Contact the landlord or managing agent and arrange professional identification and coordinated control.
What changes in a café kitchen?
A food business must follow its documented food-safety and pest-control procedures. Contaminated food is discarded, bait cannot touch food or contact surfaces, and a competent contractor may be needed. A household station recommendation is not an adequate commercial treatment plan.
