Bug spray buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have typed bug spray into amazon.co.uk and the first rows mix a fly aerosol, a plant trigger, a bed-bug multipack and, often, something meant for skin. A bug spray buying guide is the job check before the stars: which insect, which surface, and whether the millilitres agree. The [bug spray](/hub/pest-control/bug-spray) table holds the six listings kept on 20 October 2026. Prices are saved shelf prices, not a live basket. Peter F., editor for DIY & tools at productscompared.co.uk, did not spray these cans in a lab. A purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Four jobs hiding in one search

The search phrase does not describe one product. In this kept set the jobs split four ways, and a high star line on the wrong job is still the wrong can. Flying insects indoors are the Raid and Sanmex aerosols: flies, and a wasp that is already in the room. Crawling insects on hard surfaces indoors are Rentokil Insectrol, 250 ml at £6.30. Plant pests are Provanto Ultimate Bug Killer, two 1 litre triggers at £9.98, including box tree caterpillar. Bed bugs and fleas on textiles are PestShield, six 200 ml cans at £11.99. Spraying Provanto at kitchen flies is off the plant job. If the job is bites on skin, that split is on bug spray vs mosquito repellent.

What the label has to show

The Health and Safety Executive says most garden and home pesticides are for amateur use only when you follow the label. Keep children and pets away during treatment and until surfaces are dry, and do not contaminate food or drains. None of these six cards answers the pet question in a separate field. Only Insectrol prints an active: permethrin and D-allethrin. Do not fill a silent card with a US ingredient list. Insectrol's bullets say long-lasting protection for crawling insects indoors. Provanto says up to two weeks on plants. The flying aerosols talk about knockdown in seconds, not a band that lasts for months. If you are about to treat a patio wasp and the only card in your hand says indoor, stop and read again.

Pack price inside one job

Compare millilitres per pound only with another product that does the same job. Across jobs the cheap litre is often the wrong tool. Where the figures agree, Provanto is about £4.99 a litre. PestShield is about £9.99 a litre for 1.2 litres at £11.99, though its volume field is blank and you are adding the title. Insectrol is about £25.20 a litre for a single 250 ml can at £6.30. The Raid duo at £8.70 should not be divided until you have checked the box. The title says 2 × 300 ml. The saved volume fields show 100 ml and a 1.0 millilitre unit count.

When you stop buying and call someone

A single wasp in a room is not a nest in a loft. The British Pest Control Association treats nest work as a professional job. On plants, the Royal Horticultural Society says you keep people and pets off foliage until it is dry, you avoid open flowers because of pollinators, and you use a chemical only as a last resort. Provanto's two-week line is a listing claim, not permission to soak a hedge in flower. If the label job, the active and the pack still disagree with the insect in front of you, leave the can. The best bug spray UK page will not repair a mismatch.

Common questions

Should I buy a fly spray or a plant bug killer?
Buy the fly spray when the insects are in the room, and the plant killer when they are on leaves the bottle lists. Raid and Sanmex are the flying aerosols here. Provanto, £9.98 for 2 litres, is the plant trigger, including box tree caterpillar, with a claim of up to two weeks.
What does an indoor-only line change?
It limits where you may spray. Insectrol states indoor use for crawling insects. Both Raid listings say indoors. Sanmex does not print a use line on the saved page, so you wait for the can. Provanto's indoor line means indoor plants, not a treated room.
Why do wristbands appear when I search for bug spray?
The live search mixes kill sprays with skin repellents and wearables. Those files were removed from this comparison because they are not insecticide sprays. A bracelet does not clear flies from a kitchen.
Which listing names the active?
Only Rentokil Insectrol names permethrin and D-allethrin on the saved page. Raid, Sanmex, Provanto and PestShield do not. A blank active means you read the label on the tin, and you do not borrow an ingredient list from another country's listing.
How do I compare multipack prices?
Stay inside one job and divide the shelf price by the millilitres that agree. Sanmex at £6.22 for 900 ml is about £6.91 a litre. Raid's six-pack at £19.99 for 1.8 litres is about £11.11 a litre. Provanto is cheaper per litre and is still a plant spray. The Raid duo's card does not agree with its title, so do not treat £8.70 as a proven litre price.
Can a bed-bug multipack replace a treatment plan?
Not on the evidence in this set. PestShield is six 200 ml cans at £11.99, 4.0 from 614 reviews, with no active and no residual time on the card. Some buyers report fewer bites. Others say the insects were unaffected after many cans, including a case of twelve cans followed by a professional visit. If live insects remain after label-rate use, stop adding cans.
When should I leave this to a professional?
Call a pest controller for a wasp nest, especially in a loft or cavity, rather than treating it with a room aerosol. Do the same if bed bugs continue after you have followed the label. Use the poisons line on the can if someone has swallowed spray or inhaled a large amount.
