Slug collar buying guide: ring or disc

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have sown lettuce, or you have just set brassicas out, and the leaves are going overnight. A slug collar buying guide starts with the object in the parcel, because amazon.co.uk returns a tall plastic ring and a flat felt disc under the same words. This page is the order of decisions: which shape matches the damage, then which pack has a size you can read, then what the shelf price buys. The [snail collar comparison](/hub/pest-control/snail-collar) holds the ten listings, the stars, and the prices. Figures are amazon.co.uk listings. We did not run a garden trial. Lip ring or flat disc

Leaves shredded at the crown are a climbing problem. A raised ring is a wall with a lip, green PET or plastic in this set, pushed into the soil with an open top. HanYun states a 45° downward lip on a 21 cm by 12 cm ring. Ghligna states a 3 cm lip at 45° on a 23 cm outer ring. A wilting brassica is a different pest. The Royal Horticultural Society describes cabbage root fly, Delia radicum, and a flat collar of about 8–15 cm so eggs stay off the soil at the stem. The 15 cm felt pack, Nogotizam’s polyethylene discs, and Reyuvidep’s discs sit in that range. Bettsolt’s felt is listed at 27 cm, wider than that note. An open ring does not seal the stem the way a flat disc does, and a disc has no wall. The slug collar versus cabbage collar page stays on that contrast.

Size and pack in this set

Raised rings run from about £10.99 to £23.99. McBlast and VETOLAKA are £10.99 for ten. HanYun and KAHEIGN are £12.99 for twelve. Ghligna is £15.99 for twenty, 23 cm outer and 11.5 cm high, with no reviews. AOOWU is £23.99 for twenty-four. The listing does not state one ring’s diameter, and a UK review returned that set as thin and damaged. Flat discs run from £3.59 to £8.99. Reyuvidep is £3.59 for twenty-five, material not named, no reviews. Nogotizam is £4.09 for twenty-five polyethylene discs at 15 cm, 4.5 from four reviews. The unbranded felt pack is £6.99 for twenty-five and 4.4 from 52 reviews, with wind lift in the text. Bettsolt is £8.99 for twenty-five at a stated 27 cm, and no review line.

When the listing cannot tell you the size

Three ring listings do not give you one number you can trust before checkout. KAHEIGN’s title says 20 cm by 12 cm, a bullet says a 26 cm side and 12 cm height, and the technical line says 15 x 10 x 20 cm. VETOLAKA’s title says 23 cm and the technical line says 10 x 8 x 6 cm. AOOWU prints the parcel, 27.9 x 24.8 x 22 cm, and leaves the piece size blank. If the lines disagree, measure on arrival. HanYun’s 21 cm by 12 cm lines agree, and Ghligna’s 23 cm outer, 11.5 cm high, and 3 cm lip agree, with no reviews. Bettsolt states 27 cm and also prints a packed size of 15 x 8 x 1.5 cm.

What not to expect

The RHS barrier trial on lettuce found that eggshells, grit, wool, bark, and copper tape did not cut damage. Do not add copper tape to a lip and call that a proven upgrade. No listing here carries an HSE number. A 24-pack is not automatically the better buy, and a £3.59 disc is the cheapest shelf price here, with no material name and no reviews. Buy the shape that matches the damage, then a listing whose size lines agree.

Common questions

Do I want a lip ring or a flat disc?
Buy a lip ring when slugs or snails are eating leaves and the plant is still narrow enough for the ring to pass over the crown. Buy a flat disc when the worry is cabbage root fly at the stem of a new brassica, in the RHS range of about 8–15 cm.
What diameter suits a seedling versus a cabbage transplant?
A seedling wants a ring you can fit before the leaves sprawl. HanYun’s agreed figure is 21 cm across and 12 cm high. A cabbage transplant for root fly wants a flat collar around 8–15 cm, where the 15 cm discs sit. A 27 cm felt disc is wider than that note.
Is a 24-pack better because it costs £23.99?
AOOWU’s £23.99 buys 24 PET rings and a 4.0 rating from 35 reviews. It does not buy a stated diameter or a measured wall thickness. More pieces help on a row of small plants you will press in. They do not help if you needed a known size and then pinned a thin ring against the wind.
Why do three lines on one listing disagree?
KAHEIGN and VETOLAKA both print more than one size, and AOOWU prints only the parcel. Do not average those lines into a guess. Choose HanYun or Ghligna if you need the centimetres before you pay. Ghligna has no review line yet.
Is a £6.99 metal collar from the RHS shop a different buy?
Yes. The RHS Plants zinc collar is about £6.99 and about 23.7 cm by 16 cm, and it is outside this amazon.co.uk set. The £6.99 product inside the set is twenty-five 15 cm felt discs, with 52 reviews and a wind-lift complaint.
Does reusable PET mean a measured lifespan?
No listing in this set gives a tested year-count. Ghligna asks about lifespan and leaves the answer blank. The felt listing says many years, and a UK reviewer was not sure after one season. Replace a piece that no longer sits tight.
