Pine marten loft deterrent

Updated: 22 October 2026

You can hear scratching in a roof, or you have seen claw marks on a downpipe. If the animal might be a pine marten, you stop and ask the licensing body before you fit spikes or a sounder. This page is that roof decision: which animal, which law applies where you live, what ISOTRONIC 84025 is, and when a USB box in the loft is a different bet. The [marten deterrent comparison](/hub/pest-control/marten-deterrent) holds the nine listings. The Products Compared editorial team used amazon.co.uk text and public UK sources on 21 October 2026. The animal in the roof

Britain's marten is the pine marten, Martes martes. The Mammal Society places it in Scotland, northern England, northern Wales, the New Forest, and Ireland. A German Marder title is not a record of a stone marten in a British loft. Rats and mice are the animals in RAC Drive's October 2025 note on vehicle claims. Hazel dormice and bats are a separate stop: do not block a possible dormouse nest or bat roost with this kit. The Veddelholzer listing names dormice as a target. That bullet is not permission to aim a device at them. If you cannot tell the animal, phone NatureScot, Natural England, Natural Resources Wales, or the Northern Ireland Environment Agency. The marten deterrent buying guide covers the questions when the place might still be a car.

What the law allows you to block

NatureScot describes offences under Schedule 5 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. You must not intentionally or recklessly kill, injure or take a pine marten, damage or block a den, or disturb an animal in a den, except in the dwelling-house case NatureScot states. A loft can be both part of a house and a den. Blocking the hole while a pine marten is inside is the harm the offence describes. Northern Ireland is a different sentence. DAERA's householder leaflet says not to exclude or deter a pine marten from a building between March and August. Do not paste that closed season onto England, Scotland or Wales. The Vincent Wildlife Trust says trapping needs a licence. If you are unsure the loft is empty, ask before you obstruct the pipe or the soffit.

The downpipe belt in this set

ISOTRONIC 84025 is two V2A stainless spike strips at £17.92, rated 4.0 from 47 reviews. The bullets say the belt blocks martens, cats and raccoons on a downpipe, gutter or tree, with end caps on the spikes. A tree of 50 cm circumference or more needs more strips. There is no electrical supply. The seller estimates that about 90% of animals reach the roof via the downpipe. That percentage is not a study. A UK review said a shaped band helped against cats and was fiddly. Another called it useless. End caps are not evidence the strip is safe for a cat or a pine marten. The belt does nothing for a chewed loom. If the damage is in the bay, use the how to fit a marten deterrent in a car page only after a pine marten is out of the question. If you are allowed to fit the belt, shape the strip to the pipe before you tighten the ties.

A sounder in the loft is a different bet

Veddelholzer at £24.26 is the USB unit whose bullets name an attic, at 23–44 kHz, with a claim of up to 70 m² and a 2 m cable. It is 3.8 from 103 reviews. It is not a spike belt and not a 12 V clamp. The listing does not state a weather rating, so an open eaves in the rain is a poor place for it. The ISOTRONIC pair at £45.28 includes an attic and states a vibration sensor meant for a car. A UK review said only one of the two units worked. A sounder does not close a pipe. If you have been told you may deter an animal that has left a dwelling, the best marten deterrent page matches cells, USB or a sensor.

Common questions

Is an engine bay the same as a dwelling house?
No. NatureScot's dwelling-house exception is about a house. A car engine bay is not that case. Chewed vehicle wires are the RAC's rat-and-mouse story. They belong on the car-fitting page once a pine marten is ruled out.
Can you block a downpipe if the animal might be a pine marten?
Ask first. Obstructing a den is among the acts NatureScot says not to do. ISOTRONIC 84025 is two spike strips sold for a downpipe, and the seller's 90% claim is not a legal test. If you are told the animal has left and deterrence at a dwelling is allowed, the belt is a physical option with a fiddly fit.
What is different in Northern Ireland from March to August?
DAERA tells householders not to exclude or deter a pine marten from a building between March and August. That window sits under the Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order 1985. It is not a sentence you copy onto England. In Northern Ireland, contact NIEA before you close a gap in those months.
Does the spike belt also stop cats?
The 84025 bullets name cats, martens and raccoons. A UK review said a shaped band helped against cats and was fiddly. Another UK review said it was useless. End caps are part of the listing. They are not a safety proof for cats. You are buying a climb barrier, and the reviews disagree.
Who do you ask before you block a hole?
NatureScot in Scotland, Natural England in England, Natural Resources Wales in Wales, and the Northern Ireland Environment Agency in Northern Ireland. Ask before you fit spikes or run a sounder at a possible den. The Vincent Wildlife Trust notes that trapping needs a licence. This page does not give you that licence.
