How to use a Thermacell mosquito repellent

Updated: October 2026

You have switched a Thermacell on as everyone sits down, and the bites start before anyone has checked that it is alight. How to use a Thermacell is a sequence of heat, then vapour, then a wait, and the zone is not there in the first two minutes. This page follows manufacturer steps and the amazon.co.uk extracts behind our [Thermacell mosquito repellent comparison](/hub/pest-control/thermacell-mosquito-repellent), updated on 16 October 2026. We did not time a unit in a garden. If you cannot see that it is on, you do not have a zone yet.

Before you switch it on

Use it outdoors, on a table, a bank, or a pitch, and keep it out of rain. Thermacell’s where-to-use guidance says the devices are for outside. The US mat label of 1 April 2022, a US restriction set and not a GB certificate, says not indoors, not in tents, not in windy conditions, and not in rain. Cover food. The grill gets hot, so it does not belong on a bare knee or against a nylon flysheet. A porch is not a free pass. The Backpacker instruction sheet bars caravans, tents, boats, and cars because of carbon monoxide, and a zipped awning can be the same enclosed volume.

Lighting a butane unit

Put a fresh mat under the grill, blue side as the sheet shows, and screw the Thermacell butane cartridge home until it is tight. Switch the unit on, wait about 5 to 10 seconds, then press start until you see an orange glow. That glow is the sign a fuel unit is actually burning. No glow means you do not have heat, and you do not have a zone. Thermacell says allow 10 to 15 minutes for maximum effect, and to place the unit upwind if there is a breeze. The stated life on fuel models is still about four hours a plate, so a mat fading from blue towards white is not an order to swap it at twenty minutes.

The Backpacker and the E55

The Backpacker does not take that butane cell. It sits on an EN417 canister, about 70% butane and 30% propane on the instruction sheet, and the canister is not in the box. Do not force an MR-300 plate or cell onto it. The E55 is a button and a liquid cartridge, not a glow you hunt for in daylight. Charge the battery, fit the cartridge, and use the one button. The bullet claims up to 5.5 hours a charge and a 12-hour refill. Butane mats do not fit this body. Who should buy which of these is on the best Thermacell mosquito repellent page.

If nothing happens

An empty cartridge, a half-turned thread, or a grill clogged with a spent mat leaves you with no glow. Thermacell’s fuel steps say: full cartridge, tight thread, on for about 10 seconds, click start, look for the glow, clear the grill, then wait about four minutes and try again. If it still will not catch, let gas flow for about two minutes to purge, then start once more. A very windy day reduces the effect. Do not turn that into a wind speed. Stop if you smell a leak or the seal is wet with fuel. Move the unit outside, away from the tent, and do not keep clicking. A worsening bite is an NHS question, not a lighting question. On a disease-risk trip, skin repellent is the layer GOV.UK names, which is why that split sits on Thermacell versus mosquito spray.

Common questions

How do I know a fuel unit is actually on?
Look for the orange glow after you press start. Thermacell’s fuel sheets treat that glow as the sign the butane is burning under the mat. If you cannot see it, switch off, check that the cartridge is full and tight, clear the grill, and start again.
How long before I should judge it?
Allow 10 to 15 minutes for the manufacturer’s maximum-effect line, with the unit upwind of where you are sitting. The MR-300 bullet says 15 minutes. The US mat label also allows up to 30 minutes when you want a larger area. A review that says “a few minutes” is not a new official time. Judge it after that wait, in still air.
Where do I put it if there is a breeze?
Place it upwind, so the vapour drifts through the seats rather than away from them. Thermacell says a very windy day makes it less effective. The US label says not to use the mats in windy conditions. Keep both statements. A light drift across a patio is a placement job. A gusting bank may never hold a zone, and a skin product then does the job the device cannot.
When do I change a mat that has gone pale early?
Not on colour alone. Fuel mats are stated at about four hours, and the blue can fade before that clock is finished. Change a mat when the stated hours are done, or when the indicator the packet describes says it is spent. Putting a new mat in at the first pale patch wastes a refill that reviewers already call dear. Do not use a mat past the date on the foil if the pack arrived out of date.
How is the Backpacker start different from an MR300?
The MR-300 screws a Thermacell butane cell in from below and heats a blue plate. The Backpacker clips to an EN417 camping-gas canister, about 70% butane and 30% propane on its instruction sheet, and it uses Backpacker mats. The canister is not in the about £37.99 box. Do not force the MR-300 cell or plate onto the Backpacker. The carbon monoxide warning on that sheet also bars tents, caravans, boats, and cars.
