How to use a mosquito plug

Updated: 23 October 2026

How to use a mosquito plug depends on whether you have a liquid reservoir or a USB tablet, and on the words printed on your own carton. The five units on the [mosquito plug comparison](/hub/pest-control/mosquito-plug) do not all print the same steps. ABL tells you to pop the refill in and plug in. It does not print a two-hour start or a room volume. Jungle Formula’s pharmacy directions are a clear labelled example, not a script for ABL or Xpel. We did not time a bottle in a lab. Liquid plug, step by step

Start with the carton you opened. For the ABL liquid heaters the bullets say the refill goes into the plug and the plug goes into a socket. Check the cap is tight. Xpel buyers describe leaks from loose caps, and one ABL one-pack arrived already leaked and low. If the bottle is wet, short, or cracked, do not seat it. Weldricks and Superdrug, for Jungle Formula, describe cap off, bottle into the heater, then the switch on, about two hours before bed, one unit for about 30 cubic metres. Superdrug prints HSE 7492 for that product. Use those steps only if your pack says the same things. ABL and Xpel do not print a red switch, a two-hour lead, or 30 cubic metres. Do not cover the heater, and do not top the bottle up from another brand.

What 45 nights is counting

A 45-night claim is not 45 full days of continuous heat. On Jungle Formula’s directions, 45 nights means about 8 to 10 hours a night. The ABL bullets say up to 45 nights and, in the next line, up to 45 days. If you leave an ABL unit on all afternoon you spend that claim on empty rooms. One buyer of the £6.99 ABL pack switched it off during the day. A review described a wire too short to reach the switch, so do not force a switch that is not connected. When you pack the bottle, put the cap on. Loose caps are how Xpel reviews say the liquid escaped. A pheromone diffuser’s advice to wait a week if the level looks static does not transfer. On these listings, a bottle that does not move is a fault sign.

When it is not working

Watch two things: warmth, and whether the liquid falls. Xpel buyers who think it is working say they can see the level drop. An ABL two-pack review describes six weeks with almost no drop, a unit that was only slightly warm, and continued bites. Treat a static bottle plus no real heat as a heater that is not vapourising. Switch it off, unplug it, and stop. A leaked bottle stays out of the heater, and a USB plate that stays cold is finished too.

Overnight limits

Keep one unit to one closed room. A branded 30 cubic metre figure, where a label prints it, is about a single bedroom, not a flat. The ABL pages do not print that volume, so do not assume it for them. Do not park a USB heater in the only port beside your pillow. Reviews describe a strong vapour at face level and a unit that ran hot. Do not cover the body or rest it on a soft furnishing. A clicking grid is a different machine, set out on the zapper comparison.

Common questions

What order do I follow for a liquid plug?
Seat the supplied bottle only if the cap has stayed tight and the fill looks intact, then plug the heater in. ABL’s own bullets stop at that. Do not add a red switch, a room volume or a two-hour start unless your pack prints them.
Does 45 nights mean 45 full days?
No. On brands that explain the figure, it means about 45 nights of 8 to 10 hours, not 45 continuous days. ABL prints both up to 45 nights and up to 45 days in adjacent bullets. Nothing here measured these bottles across 45 nights.
What if the liquid does not drop?
Treat a bottle that stays full, especially if the body is only slightly warm, as a unit that is not vapourising. An ABL review describes that pattern over six weeks, with bites continuing. Unplug it and stop. Do not open the heater to chase the element.
What if the bottle has leaked in the box?
Do not use it. Xpel reviews trace leaks to loose caps, including in luggage, and an ABL one-pack arrived low after leaking in the packaging. Dry any wet heater before it goes near a socket, and do not top the bottle up from another brand.
Can I leave it covered or against a curtain?
No. Labelled liquids warn about hot surfaces and about covering the unit. A curtain or a cushion over a live heater traps heat. The same idea applies to a USB plate that reviewers describe as running hot. Keep the body in free air and out of a child’s reach.
Is this enough on its own in a malaria area?
No. GOV.UK’s 2026 bite-prevention guidance and NHS Fit for Travel treat a plug as an extra at night where the power stays on. You still want a net and the antimalarial advice for that destination. A plug does not prevent malaria. If someone is unwell after bites, get medical help.
What is different for a USB tablet?
Open the hatch, put in one tablet, and connect USB to a computer, a power bank, a wall charger or a car port. There is no bottle level to watch. Stop if the plate stays cold, smells harsh beside your face, or runs so hot you are uneasy. Do not use the port next to the pillow.
