Ultrasonic mouse repeller vs traps

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are in the kitchen with fresh droppings, a gap under the kickboard, and two ideas: a battery sounder, or something that blocks the hole and shows whether an animal is still there. On ultrasonic mouse repeller vs traps, public UK pages pick the hole and a trap you can check. A speaker does not close a gap. This page leaves the Isotronic catalogue. The ten listings stay on our [Isotronic mouse repellent comparison](/hub/pest-control/isotronic-mouse-repellent). Rentokil’s page is a firm’s account, not a neutral lab. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Sound loses when the hole and the food are still there

Defra’s poultry-farm rodent code says ultrasonic devices have generally produced disappointing results and lack verifiable trials. The scope is farms, not your kitchen. Testimonials are not efficacy evidence, on the Advertising Standards Authority’s pest-repellent advice. Rentokil’s UK page says mice habituate if food and shelter remain, and that the sound does not cross walls or furniture. Saved reviews match that limit: rats over units, rats beside food, then rain, a loft that stayed noisy. The £26.95 one-unit 70624 is still a battery speaker.

Proofing is the job the speaker cannot do

The BPCA’s house-mouse page says 5 mm. The mice page on the same site says 6 mm. A speaker aimed at that gap does not fill it. The method those pages describe is wire wool in a hard filler, after you know what is using the hole. Do not block air bricks, and do not block every opening on day one while animals may still be inside. A loft, cellar or garage changes the order. That stop sits on the loft page. Find the run first, then fill the opening you have identified.

Traps are the check you can see

A break-back trap is the DIY check the BPCA describes: on the run, close to the wall, out of reach of children and pets, and checked daily. If you will not check, do not set it. Drowning is not an acceptable dispatch. This page does not describe how to deal with a missed strike. Glue traps are not your alternative. GOV.UK’s licence route is for professionals. This page does not teach a bait. Rat-sized droppings are a technician’s job, on the BPCA’s line.

If you already own an Isotronic

Keep an Isotronic only as an extra, in one closed room, after you have found the gap. Place and cycle are on the how to use page, including the 25-second pause on the 70632 sheet. Switch it off if a cat or a child reacts. The 12–24 kHz band is partly audible. A quiet week is not proof the sound won. Call the council, which may charge, or a BPCA or NPTA technician when droppings are rat-sized, cable is chewed, you suspect bats, or activity returns after proofing. Another multi-pack is not the next step.

Common questions

Should I buy the repeller or traps first?
If you can see droppings and a gap, spend the effort on the gap and a break-back trap you will check daily. A battery sounder does not close a 5 mm or 6 mm hole, and UK public pages do not treat ultrasound as a proven clearance. Buy another Isotronic pack only after that work, and only if you still want a speaker in one closed room. The £26.95 one-unit is a listing choice, not the first job.
If I already own one, do I throw it away?
You do not have to. Use it as an extra in one room after the hole is found, aimed at the resting place. It is not a substitute for filler or for a trap you can see. If a pet avoids the room, switch it off. Owning it is not a reason to skip the gap.
Will ultrasound replace proofing?
No. The sound stops at walls and furniture. Proofing is wire wool in a hard filler in the gap you have identified, once you know the animals are not bats and are not still shut inside. Do not block air bricks, and do not fill every hole on day one. A speaker left on for three weeks, the window the 70632 sheet mentions, still leaves the opening there for the next animal.
Are glue traps an alternative in the UK?
Not for you. GOV.UK requires a licence for glue traps, and that route is for professionals. Householders do not use rodent glue traps as the stand-in for a break-back trap or for a repeller. If you do not want to check a break-back trap, the next step is a technician through the council, the BPCA or the NPTA, not a glue board from a shop.
Where do break-back traps go, in one sentence?
On the run, close to the wall, out of reach of children and pets, and checked every day. If you will not check, do not set the trap. This page does not go further into setting or into what to do with a missed strike, beyond the professional code: drowning is not acceptable, and an untrained dispatch is a reason to call someone. Rat-sized droppings are a technician’s job.
