Wasp spray buying guide: foam, aerosol, or a person

Updated: October 2026

You searched for a wasp spray because something is buzzing, and amazon.co.uk has already mixed two products into one shelf. A nest foam coats a colony you can see. A fly-and-wasp aerosol knocks down insects in a room. This wasp spray buying guide is the decision before the brand: which job you have, when powder or a person is the real purchase, and why a star rating will not sort the cans. The [wasp spray comparison](/hub/pest-control/wasp-spray) holds the five prices and the table. We did not laboratory-test the cans. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Two sprays, two jobs

Rentokil's UK do-it-yourself split matches what this comparison stocked. Foam is for a visible nest. A fly and wasp killer is a room spray or a direct hit on an insect you can see. Powder is a third product, for an entrance you cannot see. Only Zero In Ultra Power 600 ml, at £12.94, is a nest foam. If you can see a nest, the detail is on wasp nest killer foam. If the problem is flies, or one wasp that flew in, go to indoor fly and wasp killer. The order of work, once you already hold the right can, is how to use wasp nest foam.

What you can see, and what you cannot

A nest in a shed, on a low soffit, or in a hedge is the foam job. The British Pest Control Association tells you not to treat a nest if you might be allergic. If you can only see an air brick, a gap, or a crack, foam that stops at the brick does not reach a nest a metre inside. Rentokil notes a GB-only change to that dust from 1 August 2025. This comparison does not include a powder.

The label beats the listing

None of the five extracts prints an HSE number. That is a gap in the file. It is not proof the cans are unapproved, and it is not proof they are approved. The Sanmex title says fly and wasp killer, and the target-species field says Ant. The Raid duo title says 2 × 300 ml, and the volume field says 100 ml. The unbranded pack has a USDA line rather than an HSE number. Do not copy an ingredient from a different Zero In size onto ZER556.

Money and risk

The extracts run from £6.22 to £19.99. A 300 ml Zero In foam was about £4.99 to £5.52 at two UK trade sellers in October 2026. That is a different can. Call 111 if a sting is in the mouth, and 999 for signs of anaphylaxis. This page stops when you can say which of the four routes you are on: foam, room aerosol, powder you will not find here, or a person.

Common questions

Do I need foam or a normal wasp spray?
Foam is for a nest you can see and stand back from. A normal wasp spray in this set, including Sanmex and the Raid aerosols, is a knockdown can for flies or a single insect in a room. It does not coat a colony.
Will the highest-rated can kill the nest?
No. The highest rating here is the Raid six-pack at 4.6 from 6,783 reviews, and its title is an indoor fly killer. Stars measure what buyers wrote about flies and the odd wasp in a room. They do not measure whether foam reached an entrance.
What if I can only see a hole in the wall?
Foam has to land on a nest. An air brick or a crack hides the colony, and spraying the opening does not send foam a metre into the cavity. Blocking the hole can send wasps indoors. Powder is the product type Rentokil describes for that entrance, and this comparison does not stock it. A hole you cannot see past is a reason to stop shopping these five cans.
How do I know the can is legal for me to use?
Read the label for an amateur authorisation number and a user line that includes the public. HSE says that number looks like HSE followed by digits, or a UK, GB, or NI code. None of these five amazon.co.uk extracts prints that number, so the page cannot clear the can for you. If the tin says professional use only, or shows no number, do not spray it.
Is a six-pack better because it costs more?
The Raid six-pack at £19.99 is more indoor spray, with a model number and a large review count. It is not a stronger nest treatment than the £12.94 foam, because it is not a nest treatment. Extra cans help if you expect a summer of flies.
When is the council or a BPCA member the right buy?
Phone when the nest is above head height, hidden in a cavity, large and established, or when anyone in the household might be allergic. Leeds uses head height as the DIY cut-off and lists £76 including VAT for its own treatment, which is not a national price. A BPCA member is the trade route when your council does not offer a visit. Another can from this shelf does not change those limits.
What if the insects might be bees?
Stop. Honey bees are a last resort for insecticide under HSE guidance, not a wasp-spray job. A suspected yellow-legged hornet should be left alone and reported with a photograph to the Non-native Species Secretariat. If you are unsure of the species, uncertainty is the reason to wait.
