How to hang a decoy wasp nest

Updated: 22 October 2026

You already have a shell, or it is on the way. How to hang a decoy wasp nest depends on the listing: when to hang it, whether to fill it, and where it survives British rain. A keep-dry paper lantern is a different job from cloth, and both differ from wasps already on the plates. The twelve listings in the [decoy wasp nest comparison](/hub/pest-control/decoy-wasp-nest) were captured on 19 October 2026. Hang it before queens settle

Waspinator’s bullets say hang the twin pack before spring, and again before spring after winter storage. The Royal Horticultural Society describes the first nest as about golf-ball size. That is season context, not a promise that a dummy moves queens. July and August are the wrong month: workers are on sweet food, and a hook does not clear a picnic. The shell still has to hold a shape. Pest strike’s reviews describe frameless bags that were hung and ignored. What a hanging ball has not been shown to do is on do decoy wasp nests work.

Fill, frame, or neither

Waspinator’s bullet says fill with old plastic bags. The brand page adds a light fill, such as bin liners or newspaper, and says hang by the top loop, not the drawstring. A balloon deflated, and a 2015 review says the clip broke within about 12 weeks. WenYa is a wire you insert, 28 cm when open, with no UK review text. Plai’s bullets omit stuffing. UK reviews add it, including a burst balloon. V·Colokishi’s paper tore on the wire. JISRKP split while frames were pushed in. Dzpuhuojz does not ask for a fill. Buyers used cable ties. Which shell to buy is on the decoy wasp nest buying guide.

Eaves, shelter and the hanger

Bullets repeat the eaves, a parasol, a pergola, a shed or a tree. Plai adds about 6–8 feet up and 4–12 feet from the sitting area. That is one listing’s seller copy, not a rule for all twelve. Waspinator says up to 12 metres across. This page does not draw that circle as a measured radius. Keep-dry paper does not belong on an open line. Hang by the top loop: reviews include a clip that broke and a shell that fell. Dzpuhuojz buyers used cable ties, which do not cancel one humidity warning. If the hook needs a ladder you dislike, stop. Do not interfere with a nest already in the soffit.

Winter, and when to stop

Waspinator says take the decoys inside after summer and hang them again before spring. Dry the shell first. Storage is care, not proof the shell did anything in July. Stop when the problem is no longer an empty eave. A shell does not empty a nest in use, and it does not move workers off a plate. A loft, a path children use, or a nest above head height is a job for a professional. Do not seal the hole. If you think the insect is a yellow-legged hornet, report it and stay away. Foragers on food, or an entrance you can see, belong on decoy wasp nest vs wasp trap.

Common questions

Which month do the listings say to hang it?
Waspinator’s bullets say before spring, and again before spring after you have stored the shells indoors. Early spring is the same timing on paper-lantern wording in this search. The Royal Horticultural Society’s golf-ball nest is context for queens choosing a site. July is the wrong job. A week of quiet weather after you hang one does not date the success to that week.
Do I have to stuff every decoy?
No. Waspinator’s bullet says fill with old plastic bags. The brand page adds a light fill and says hang by the top loop, not the drawstring. WenYa says insert a wire frame and does not mention stuffing. Plai leaves stuffing out of the bullets, and UK reviews add it. V·Colokishi and JISRKP are the rows where forcing a wire through thin paper tears the shell. Follow the listing you opened.
Where do the bullets say to put it?
Under eaves, a parasol, a pergola, a shed, a deck or a tree, which is the list Waspinator and Plai actually print. Plai’s bullet adds about 6–8 feet above the ground and 4–12 feet from the sitting area. That is Plai’s bullet. Thin paper adds a dry, sheltered place. A two-metre height on a page outside these twelve files is not a rule for this set.
Can I leave a paper shell in the rain?
V·Colokishi tells you not to place it somewhere wet, and reviews describe tears and a shell ruined after the first summer storm. Waspinator says waterproof and still says fill it so rain does not collapse the shape, then take it in after summer. Dzpuhuojz says waterproof cloth, and one review cites a humidity instruction. Read the warning on your own box before you leave it on an open line.
What do I do with it in winter?
Take it indoors after summer if the listing says so. Waspinator is explicit: in after summer, out again before spring. Dry it first. A paper shell left out is the shell reviews describe as finished after a season or two. Storage is care. It is not evidence that the summer was quiet because of the decoy.
Will hanging one move wasps that are already on the plates?
No. Workers on food in high summer are a foraging problem. A dummy is a shape you hang before queens settle, and even that timing has no trial behind it. A bait trap, if you choose one, is a different product. A nest you can see is a third job, and it is not solved by moving the shell closer to the entrance.
