Sockets and extension leads

Updated: October 2026Hub-Seite

Sockets and extension leads covers UK wall sockets, plug-in adaptors, extension leads, cable reels and the small fittings that sit on the same 13 A circuit. A tower, a flat bar, a reel and a wireless socket solve different jobs, and none of them raises the fuse in the wall plug.

The cards are the way in. Each comparison holds the amazon.co.uk listings saved for that product, including the plug, the cable and the price, because those lines move.

Common questions about sockets and extension leads

What is the 13 A limit on one UK wall socket or extension lead?
Most UK household sockets and extension leads are rated at 13 A. That is one fuse and one budget for every appliance on the strip together. A title that says 3,250 W is often 13 A times 250 V written as watts. UK mains are nominally 230 V, so the same 13 A is about 2,990 W. A typical kettle can use almost all of that on its own. A joule surge figure does not raise the continuous limit. Electrical Safety First says to use only one extension device per socket and not to daisy-chain.
Is a wall plug on this hub the same as a 13 A mains socket?
No. Here a wall plug is a plastic rawl plug for a screw in brick, block, stone or concrete. BS 1363 is the UK 13 A plug standard, not a rating for those sleeves. A 13 A outlet, a USB charger and a travel adapter are different products. For a mains point on the wall, use the surface-mounted socket or USB socket comparisons. For fixing a picture or a shelf, use the wall plug comparison.
Is a wall-mounted extension lead the same as a surface-mounted socket?
No. A wall-mounted extension lead is still a portable strip on one Type G plug. Screwing it to a wall does not create a new circuit. A surface-mounted socket is fixed wiring in a pattress or metal-clad box. If you need sockets in the same place every day, more wall sockets beat another lead. Do not run an ordinary extension into a bathroom.
Can you daisy-chain extension leads?
Electrical Safety First advises against daisy-chaining extension leads. A second lead plugged into the first puts every load through the single wall socket and its fuse. Use one lead inside its marked current, or add fixed sockets instead of a second strip. A UPS C14 lead is a different shape and does not plug into a wall socket at all.
What is a UPS extension lead for?
A UPS extension lead has an IEC C14 plug that goes into a C13 outlet on a UPS or PDU. You use a UK four-gang when a device still has a BS 1363 plug-top. You use C14-to-C13 when the device already has a kettle inlet. It is not a wall surge strip and none of the seven listings in that comparison prints a joule rating. Treat the feed as 10 A unless the UPS manual prints less.
When does a new socket need a registered electrician?
In England and Wales, Part P makes some work notifiable. A new circuit, work in a kitchen, bathroom or outdoors, or anything you cannot match to an existing circuit needs a competent person. Replacing like for like on an existing circuit is often a different case, but heat, burning, or a socket that stays live with its switch off are stop signs. Bathroom-zone sockets belong at least 2.5 m from a bath or shower.
Do you still need a new telephone socket on full fibre?
On full fibre the optical network terminal replaces the copper master, and Digital Voice plugs a phone into the hub. Openreach's traditional lines are due to be digital from 31 January 2027. A new analogue wall socket is the wrong buy when the phone already plugs into the router, unless a provider has told you to reuse the master. Check master versus secondary before you buy a BS 6312 plate.
Do Wi-Fi sockets need 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi?
Most of the eight Wi-Fi socket listings in this hub are 2.4 GHz only. Silence in the title is not dual-band. Pairing usually needs the phone on 2.4 GHz during setup. Tapo, Smart Life or Tuya, BG Home and NOUS Smart Home use separate apps. A phone watt graph is not your electricity bill, and none of the listings prints a BS 1363 check or an outdoor IP rating.
