TV aerial wall socket: which plate matches the cable

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are replacing one TV aerial wall socket, and the amazon.co.uk titles look like the same white square. By the end you should know which connector you already have, whether direct current must pass, and whether the back box is deep enough. A TV aerial wall socket ends a 75 ohm downlead. It is not a BS 1363 mains socket. Prices sit on the [aerial socket comparison](/hub/sockets-and-extension-leads/aerial-socket). Screening is on the [screened or unscreened TV socket](/hub/sockets-and-extension-leads/aerial-socket/sub/aerial-socket-screened-or-unscreened) page. Peter F. used the listings and public UK sources, not a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What a UK TV aerial wall socket actually is

A house aerial usually wants a female IEC outlet and a male-to-male fly-lead, because the television input is female too. A male plate is for a female lead or a loop-through. Satellite uses a threaded F-connector. A bullet that only says satellite has not shown you that connector or a direct-current path. In this set only the BG Electrical 960-0J states female IEC, at about £2.10, with a 25 mm minimum box. Ignore a Display Port field and 50/60 Hz. BS 3041 is the outlet pattern. BS 5733 is not a screening class. A single plate will not restore a second feed.

Isolated, non-isolated, or a second connector

Isolation is a direct-current choice, not a picture grade. A non-isolated plate can feed a masthead amplifier, an LNB or a remote eye. An isolated plate blocks that current. Schneider Electric UK puts a communal system on the isolated side. The MK leaflet says an isolated outlet will not power a masthead amplifier. None of these twelve listings states an isolation voltage. An isolated plate on a powered aerial looks like a dead roof aerial. In a flat, ask the managing agent before you change the shared plate. Voltrique, Whispern Cloud and TIANXUAN mention satellite and do not name an F-connector. The Nexus plate at about £5.99 does not state gender or isolation.

Back box and metal plates

BG specifies a minimum 25 mm box for the 960-0J, only just enough for a coax loop. A Knightsbridge screened euro module at Screwfix, £4.49 including VAT, needs 35 mm. If the cable must fold hard, the break-up is a kink, not a weak transmitter. The back box is not in the BG pack. Earth a metal plate where BS 7671 requires it, and do not share the box with mains above 50 V. The DRUT plate and the Nexus plate are the metal finishes here. A metal face beside live mains is a competent-person job. Do not work on the aerial in a thunderstorm.

Claims to ignore on a cheap listing

Flame-retardant wording, a bronze core and a screwdriver in the packet are packing notes. If the signal is already strong and you are copying a female IEC plate, start with the BG 960-0J. If you need screened, F-type or isolated printed for a communal system, buy the plate that says so.

Common questions

Female or male on the wall?
Use a female IEC plate for a normal house television, then a male-to-male fly-lead, because the set’s aerial input is female too. A male plate suits a female lead or a loop-through. In this set only the BG 960-0J states female IEC. Satellite uses a threaded F-connector, which is a different socket.
When is isolated the wrong upgrade?
Isolated is the wrong plate when something on the cable needs direct current: a masthead amplifier, an LNB, or a remote eye. Schneider Electric UK reserves isolated outlets for communal systems. An isolated plate on a powered aerial looks like a dead roof aerial, because the amplifier has no supply. None of these twelve listings states which type is in the packet, so isolated on a different brand’s page is not evidence for these ASINs.
Does satellite on the bullet mean an F-connector?
No. Voltrique and Whispern Cloud mention satellite beside TV and FM and never name an F-connector or a DC path. An F-connector is threaded and has a centre pin. If the page does not say that, you still have an IEC-shaped claim. A dish lead will not make the wording true. Buy a plate that prints F-type if that is the plug in your hand.
Is 25 mm enough, or do I need 35 mm?
The BG 960-0J states a 25 mm minimum, which is the usual flush box and only just enough for a coax loop. The Knightsbridge screened module listed at Screwfix for £4.49 including VAT needs 35 mm. If the sheath kinks to get the plate flush, the box is too shallow. Depth is unstated on most unbranded listings here.
Can this plate share a box with a mains socket?
No. The MK leaflet says not to install the outlet in an enclosure with mains above 50 V, and a metal plate has to be earthed where BS 7671 requires it. Coax and a 13 A socket are different jobs. If the existing box already contains mains conductors, stop and use a separate box or a competent person. The aerial plate is not a way to add a power outlet.
What should I ignore on a cheap listing?
Ignore 50/60 Hz, Display Port, and a high star line built on a handful of reviews when the connector is unstated. The TIANXUAN cable field says Display Port on a TV faceplate. Flame-retardant plastic is not EN 50083-2. A screwdriver in the pack does not tell you whether current can pass. Read gender, isolation, screening and box depth, and treat silence as unknown.
