Wall mounted extension lead surge protection

Updated: October 2026

You are looking at a wall mounted extension lead surge protection claim, and you want to know if that word is a joule rating or a 13 A fuse in bigger language. On the nine amazon.co.uk listings in our [wall mounted extension lead comparison](/hub/sockets-and-extension-leads/wall-mounted-extension-lead), call it surge protection only when that page prints joules. A fuse does a different job, and neither figure lets you plug in more watts. This page unpacks the DEWENWILS clash and the TOPREK joule lines, from the listings read on 16 October 2026. Joules are not the 13 A fuse

A joule figure, when a listing prints one, is a claim about surge energy. The continuous limit is still one 13 A plug, about 2,990 W at a nominal 230 V. A BS 1362 fuse opens on overload or a fault. Electrical Safety First describes that as overload protection, not as a joule rating. If the lead is dead after a surge, replace a fuse or the lead. Do not open the housing. The other buying checks are on the buying guide.

DEWENWILS prints 270 J and also 13 Amps

The DEWENWILS 6-way, B091DRYXDQ, at £16.99, prints both kinds of claim. The safety bullet says 270 joules and a 13 A resettable breaker. The surge attribute says 13 Amps, not joules. Quote both. Reviewers name surge as a reason to buy the bar for a PC. That is a motive, not a measurement of 270 joules. The skip-if on the best page covers the switch-count clash. Treat 13 Amps as the current limit the bar already had.

BOCHLION and Alpheus say surge and print no joules

The BOCHLION 5-way, B0G5GTMYCG, at £25.99, puts surge in the title and prints no joules. Reviews say the unit is marked overload protection, not surge. One review says the block is not stamped BS 1363. That is a marking comment, not a joule test. The Alpheus 7-way, B0GTPY8GLM, at £28.99, says a surge protection system and gives no joules. One review suspects the claim is the fuse in the plug. The garage page treats that strip as a bench mount. It does not invent a joule figure. The PIBEEX, toomke, ANVODE, and ROOTOMA also print no joules.

Where a joule number is actually printed

The pages that print joules and repeat them are the two TOPREK bars. The 3-way, B0DT64B91Z, at £18.99, prints 1,800 J. The 6-way, B0F6CRXCDC, at £22.99, prints at least 2,100 J, and the attribute repeats 2,100 joules. Both are wood-effect plastic on a 2 m cable, and large plugs can block a neighbour on the 6-way. Do not rank 270 J against 1,800 J against 2,100 J as a test of which one protects more. None of those figures raises the 13 A limit.

Common questions

What is a joule rating on an extension lead?
It is a printed claim for how much surge energy a protector is said to absorb. It is not the 13 A the strip can carry in normal use. At a nominal 230 V, 13 A is about 2,990 W for the whole bar. A joule figure does not add watts. A listing that never prints joules has not given you that claim.
Does the DEWENWILS listing say 270 J or 13 A?
It says both, in different places. The safety bullet says 270 joules and a 13 A resettable breaker. The surge attribute says 13 Amps, not joules. Quote both. The £16.99 price and 4.6 from 2,224 reviews do not decide which line is the surge claim.
Why do BOCHLION reviews say overload when the title says surge?
Because the title says surge and the page prints no joules. The safety bullet lists overload and related cut-offs. Reviewers say the unit is marked overload protection. That limits current. It is not a joule rating. The cable length on that listing also conflicts, which is a separate reason to read past the title.
What surge figure does Alpheus print?
None. The bullet says a surge protection system and does not give joules. One review found no description on the product or the box and suspects the fuse in the plug. That is a review, not a measurement. The strip is a 7-way metal bar at £28.99, stated at 13 A, with no cable length on the listing.
Which of the nine print 1,800 J or 2,100 J?
The TOPREK 3-way prints 1,800 J. The TOPREK 6-way prints at least 2,100 J, repeated in the attribute. The DEWENWILS bullet prints 270 J beside an attribute that says 13 Amps. The PIBEEX, toomke, ANVODE, ROOTOMA, BOCHLION, and Alpheus do not print joules. The ROOTOMA still says integrated surge suppression.
Does a higher joule number let you plug in more watts?
No. The continuous limit remains one 13 A plug, about 2,990 W at a nominal 230 V, whether the page says 270 J, 1,800 J, 2,100 J, or nothing. A heater and a kettle on the same bar are still an overload. We are not ranking those joule numbers as a safety test.
Is a 13 A fuse the same as surge protection?
No. A 13 A BS 1362 fuse opens when the current is too high. A joule rating is a claim about energy, and you only have it when the listing prints joules. An attribute that says "13 Amps" under surge protection is repeating the current limit. If the lead is dead after a surge, Electrical Safety First's steer is a replaceable fuse or a new lead, not a housing you open.
