Tower extension lead buying guide

Updated: 24 October 2026

You are comparing a vertical lead for a UK desk, and the title is already mixing jobs. It may promise twelve devices, 3,250 W, and a cable that another line shortens. This tower extension lead buying guide puts the checks in order before you open the [socket tower comparison](/hub/sockets-and-extension-leads/socket-tower). Read the plug and the fuse first, then the current, then how many holes are mains sockets. Length, switches and any surge figure come after that. Prices and stars are the amazon.co.uk figures captured on 21 October 2026. Products Compared did not lab-test these towers. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Start with the plug and the fuse

A tower for a UK wall socket needs a BS 1363 plug, the square-pin type with a fuse, and sockets in that family. The fuse is normally a BS 1362 13 A fuse. Regulation 35 of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 expects a standard plug or a proper fused conversion. GOV.UK allows UKCA, CE, or CE plus UKNI, so a missing CE mark is not the whole story. BEAMA’s checklist asks for BS 1363/A on the plug and the sockets, shutters, and a cable as long as the advert. In this set the attribute row does not always say Type G. Kemelo B0B3DJG5RN is filed as Type B, while a review describes 13 A 3-pin sockets. HAFINO B0BMZTKS5P prints Type B and Type G on different rows. hotimy B0BXCM6M46 and KLINTOS B0CN9MNZSM are filed as Type C. toomke B0CVXNS84B prints Type B and Type G together. Type B is a North American description. Type C is the two-pin Euro description. Neither is a BS 1363 plug. Look at the pins in the box.

Read 13 A before you read 3,250 W

Most titles print 13 A and 3,250 W. At about 250 V those are the same budget written twice. Extra faces do not add capacity. Every mains socket on the column shares the fuse in the wall plug. A kettle near that limit leaves almost nothing else, which is why the how to use a tower extension lead page keeps kettles and heaters in the wall socket. Count AC sockets separately from USB. TESSAN B09C29CGMS has eight AC sockets and three USB ports. An 11 outlets line is the sum. Eight mains sockets will not become twelve because a phone port is present. Do not average current cells that disagree. TESSAN prints 8 A and a maximum of 101 A, so you read the plate. SE UKASE prints 13 A and 3,120 W at 240 V. Sameriver prints 13 A, then 3,250 W in a bullet and 2,990 W in the highlight. USB watts sit on the same plug and are small beside 13 A. What they can charge is on the tower extension lead USB C page.

Length, thickness, and listings that disagree

Measure the run before you trust the title. A socket beside the desk is a 1.8 m or 2 m job. The HAFINO night-light tower, the Addtam and the toomke eight-way are listed at 1.8 m. TESSAN, SE UKASE, hotimy and Wolf Power are listed at 2 m. Kemelo and the toomke 12-way state 3 m. KLINTOS puts 5 m in the title, at a captured £28.03, with Type C still on the plug rows. Sameriver B0F18D1K1G is the clash to leave unresolved. The title and the item length say 10 m. One bullet says 2 m. A reviewer describes 5 m. The captured price is £31.34. Until you measure the flex, you do not have a 10 m tower. On thickness, BEAMA allows 1 mm² up to 2 m, and 1.25 mm² or 1.5 mm² beyond that, on a 13 A lead. Most staged listings omit a cross-section. SE UKASE does print 1.25 mm² on a 2 m lead. None of the twelve has an IP rating. A Sameriver sentence about patios does not make an outdoor tower.

Switches, surge figures, and what can wait

A side switch lets you kill one face without crawling to the wall. The HAFINO night-light tower, Wolf Power, KLINTOS and both toomke models claim several switches. TESSAN has one switch on top. Addtam does not state a switch. SE UKASE claims a kill switch, and a reviewer could not find it. A switch does not change the fuse, and it may leave USB on. Surge lines are maker claims. This page did not measure joules. TESSAN states 1,700 joules, the HAFINO night-light tower 1,800, and KLINTOS 1,400. HAFINO’s 12-way puts 3,250 watts in the surge cell, which is the load, not stored energy. Pay for a joule line only when you want that claim in writing. It does not add amps. Stability comes last. TESSAN reviewers say the tower will not stand with oversized plugs, and hotimy has a toppling report. Who each tower is for sits on best tower extension lead.

Common questions

How many mains sockets do I actually need?
Count the 13 A plugs you will use together, including chargers with a mains brick, and leave USB out of that count. Eight AC sockets cover a modest desk. Twelve helps when a large adaptor blocks its neighbour, which reviewers mention on Wolf Power and the toomke 12-way. Either layout still shares one 13 A fuse. A kettle plus a toaster is a reason to use the wall socket, not to buy a taller tower.
What if the title and the bullet disagree on cable length?
Treat the length as unknown until you measure it. On Sameriver B0F18D1K1G the title and the item length say 10 m, one bullet says 2 m, and a review mentions 5 m. The captured price is £31.34. BEAMA asks whether the cable matches the advert. A reach you cannot verify is a weak reason to prefer that listing over a 3 m lead whose length at least agrees with itself.
What should I do if the listing says plug type B or C?
Look at the pins. Type B, on Kemelo and on one row of the HAFINO 12-way and the toomke eight-way, is a North American description. Type C, on hotimy and KLINTOS, is the Euro two-pin description. A review may still describe a UK 3-pin plug. Keep both statements. Return a lead whose plug does not match a UK wall socket, rather than guessing that the attribute is a typo.
Is a joule number a reason to pay more?
Only if you want a surge-energy claim written down. TESSAN, the HAFINO night-light tower and KLINTOS print 1,700, 1,800 and 1,400 joules. Others say surge or overload without joules, or they put 3,250 W in the surge cell, which is a load figure. None of those numbers was measured here. A joule line does not let you add a heater to a full desk.
When is 1.8 m or 2 m enough?
It is enough when the wall socket is beside the desk or the TV and the flex will not cross a walkway. The 1.8 m listings include the HAFINO night-light tower, the Addtam and the toomke eight-way. The 2 m listings include TESSAN, SE UKASE, hotimy and Wolf Power. Step up to the 3 m Kemelo or toomke 12-way, or the 5 m KLINTOS title, when the socket is further away, and check the plug rows on those longer leads first.
Does a thicker-cable claim past 2 m matter?
BEAMA’s checklist allows 1 mm² up to 2 m, and 1.25 mm² or 1.5 mm² on a longer 13 A lead. Most of these listings never print a size. SE UKASE does print 1.25 mm², on a 2 m lead. For a 5 m or disputed 10 m title, ask for the conductor size before you treat the lead as heavy duty.
