How to fit a corner socket: pads, screws or wiring

Updated: 23 October 2026

The parcel is on the table and the search results are already teaching you a hole saw for a pop-up worktop socket. This page is how to fit a corner socket from the six amazon.co.uk listings in the [corner socket comparison](/hub/sockets-and-extension-leads/corner-socket). Five of them are plug-in leads: you place pads or screws, then use a wall socket you already have. One of them, the Knightsbridge SKR008, has no plug. Fitting that unit stops at isolate, earth and a competent person. Products Compared did not lab-test these products. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

A plug-in corner lead uses the socket you already have

Unwind the cable fully before you load it. Electrical Safety First asks for one extension device per wall socket and no daisy-chains. Place the body where air can move. Do not hide a warm case under bedding or inside a sealed void. ANVODE lists four adhesive pads. The Brennenstuhl estilo bullets claim pads with no drilling, horizontal or vertical. Both ToneRiso colours sit in a corner; no screw kit is listed. BEVA lists two mounting holes for a desk edge, a wall or under a cupboard. None of those steps turns the lead into a fixed socket. You still finish by putting a Type G plug into a BS 1363 wall outlet.

Check the fixing the listing actually prints

Trust the Amazon file more than a no-drill headline. One estilo review says the tape suits vertical fixing only. Some ANVODE buyers say the pads failed. BEVA's two holes are the screw path; a tool-free claim is not printed. A ToneRiso that only sits in a corner can walk if a plug is yanked. Kitchen steam changes what a pad can hold; that room sits on kitchen worktop corner socket. If a shutter fights the plug, stop.

The SKR008 is not a lead you plug in

The Knightsbridge SKR008 Amazon file lists no mains lead. The bullets describe a socket you wire in. Reviews say there is no back, so the rear needs a wall or an enclosure. Base and rear must sit against a flat surface. An open back under a cupboard without a rear plane is not that instruction. If you opened the box expecting a trailing lead, stop and return it or replace it with a plug-in model. Do not invent a plug. A Type G field is not proof that a flex is included. Who should not buy a wired socket is on plug in corner socket or wired socket.

Isolate, earth, and a competent person

The SKR008 manual says the product is Class I and must be earthed, for indoor use, and that a competent person should install it. Isolate the circuit, and do not insulation-test the product. Terminal colours are brown live, blue neutral and green/yellow earth. That is a safety block, not a DIY licence. Reviews mention a tight cable-entry grommet, small connector blocks and covers that go missing. One saved review describes an earth assembly fault on arrival. Check the terminals before the circuit is energised. IP20 on the manual is an indoor dry rating, not splash-proof, and the Amazon table does not print an IP rating.

In England, notifiable is a short list

Approved Document P (2013) is narrower for England than older pages: adding a socket on an existing kitchen circuit is not, by itself, notifiable. A new circuit, a consumer-unit change, and bath or shower work still are. Not notifiable is not the same as anyone may connect it. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own rules. The SKR008 still needs someone competent. If the mains rating is unclear, use the corner socket buying guide. Peter F., editor for DIY & tools, set these limits from the listings and the SKR008 manual on 21 October 2026. There was no lab test.

Common questions

Can I fit every corner socket in this set myself?
You can place a plug-in lead's pads or screws and plug it into an existing wall socket. The SKR008 is not a plug-in lead. The manual asks for a competent person, isolation and an earth. If you are not competent to isolate and terminate, hire someone who is.
Do I need a hole saw?
Not for these six products. Hole-saw pop-ups are a different market. This set either sits or sticks as a lead, or screws as a surface socket against flat planes. A pop-up cut-out is not a step on the SKR008 or on any of the five trailing leads.
Are adhesive pads enough in a kitchen?
Sometimes on a clean vertical face, and sometimes not. Estilo and ANVODE reviews already dispute tape. Steam and weight beside a kettle are reasons to prefer screws or a wired socket. One estilo review says the tape suits vertical fixing only.
What does the SKR008 manual require before connection?
Isolate the circuit, earth the Class I housing, keep the unit indoors, and follow the competent-person instruction. Do not insulation-test the product. Terminal colours in the manual are brown live, blue neutral and green/yellow earth. That is the manual's safety block, not a licence to connect it yourself.
Is every kitchen socket notifiable in England?
No. Under Approved Document P (2013), adding a socket on an existing kitchen circuit is not automatically notifiable. New circuits, a consumer-unit change, and bath or shower zones still are. Competence is a separate question. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are not this English list.
When should I stop and call an electrician?
When the unit has no plug, when you cannot isolate safely, when a lead already runs hot, or when you need extra wall sockets instead of another trailing lead. Heat, sparks or a shutter that will not take a plug are stop signs, not fitting tips.
