Corner socket buying guide: rating, USB and fixing

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are staring at a worktop corner or a desk that eats two plugs, and every search result calls itself a corner socket. This corner socket buying guide puts the checks in order before you open the [corner socket comparison](/hub/sockets-and-extension-leads/corner-socket). In this set the phrase covers a plug-in corner extension lead with a UK plug, and one fixed 13 A stainless socket you wire in. Extra outlets do not add extra current. Prices and stars sit on the main page. Products Compared did not lab-test these units. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

A corner socket is either a lead or a wired socket

Five of the six kept amazon.co.uk listings are trailing leads. They plug into a wall socket you already have and share one fuse. The Knightsbridge SKR008 has no trailing cable. You wire it in, with the base and the rear against flat surfaces. If you must leave no mark and unplug when you move, stay with a lead. A permanent worktop outlet is the wired socket. The choice is on plug in corner socket or wired socket. A stainless face can still be a lead.

Read the mains rating, not the socket count

Electrical Safety First says most domestic extension leads are rated at 13 A, the rating should be marked, and you should not daisy-chain leads. BEAMA's checklist looks for BS 1363-2, a 13 A fuse, and shutters that work. An estilo brand page prints 13 A and 3250 W. The amazon.co.uk file in this set does not. The SKR008 prints 13 A at 230 V and names BS 1363-2. BEVA prints 3250 W for the whole lead, with no separate mains amp. ToneRiso prints up to 2500 W while 4.2 A sits beside USB. ANVODE prints no mains wattage. London Fire Brigade warns against stacking kettle, toaster and microwave on one lead. If the page will not show a mains rating, stop. Job matching without a lab winner sits on best corner socket.

USB amps and joules are not extra mains current

USB ports do not raise the shared fuse. On the estilo Amazon file, 3 A and 3.1 A sit beside the USB line, not a 13 A mains rating. On ANVODE, USB-C up to 3 A each and a total of 5 V / 3.4 A do not agree. Surge figures are 900 joules on BEVA, 1050 joules on ToneRiso, and 1200 joules on ANVODE. A joule number does not add amps. One ToneRiso review says the box does not mention surge protection even though the page prints 1050 J.

Match the fixing to the room

A rented desk usually wants adhesive pads or a lead that simply sits in the corner. ANVODE lists four pads. One estilo review says the tape suits vertical fixing only. Both ToneRiso colours sit in a corner, with no fixing kit listed. BEVA lists two mounting holes and is still a plug-in lead. The SKR008 needs flat contact on the base and the rear. Reviews say there is no back, so an open rear under a cupboard is not what the Amazon bullet describes. Kitchen splash and pads beside steam belong on kitchen worktop corner socket.

Stop if the listing hides the mains rating or the lead runs hot

Heat, scorch marks, a buzzing smell or a spark are stop signs. Unplug and do not keep using the lead. Saved ANVODE UK reviews describe heat, a spark at the switch, a tripped kitchen breaker, and one report of a fire after about six months. That is a review report, not a lab finding. Do not invent 13 A from a USB line or from a brand page for a different colour. Peter F., editor for DIY & tools, updated this guide from listings scored on 21 October 2026. No lab test.

Common questions

Is a corner socket the same thing as an extension lead?
Often, on amazon.co.uk, yes: a triangular or angled bar with a plug. In this set five listings are leads. The Knightsbridge SKR008 is not. It is a fixed 13 A double-pole socket with no trailing lead listed. Read the form before you read the USB line. A stainless face on the photo can still be a plug-in lead.
What do I do if the listing prints 3.1 A and never prints 13 A?
Treat 3.1 A as a USB charging figure until a mains mark appears on the product. On the estilo Amazon file in this set, those amps sit beside USB. Do not buy on the assumption that the brand's other web page has already printed 13 A for you. A brand page can state 13 A and 3250 W while this Amazon card does not.
Does a joule number raise the amp limit?
No. Joules describe a surge-energy claim. They do not add capacity for heaters or kettles. You still need a readable mains rating and a sensible load total. In this set the printed claims are 900 J, 1050 J and 1200 J, and one ToneRiso review says the box does not mention surge protection.
What fixing matches a rented desk, and what matches a worktop I can screw into?
Pads or a freestanding corner sit suit a desk you must not mark, provided you accept review disputes about tape. A worktop permanent outlet points at the SKR008 and a competent person, not at another adhesive lead. BEVA's two screw holes are still a plug-in path into a wall socket you already have.
When do I stop and call an electrician instead of buying a lead?
When you need a permanent outlet, when the listing will not show a mains rating, when a lead already runs hot, or when you already live on stacked extensions. More wall sockets from a registered electrician beat another undocumented bar. Heat, scorch marks or a spark mean unplug and stop.
