Camping hook up cable reel: 25 m lead or UK sockets

Updated: 23 October 2026

The bollard is across the grass, and the product photo shows four UK sockets on a small drum. A camping hook up cable reel can be that drum, or it can be the long blue lead the clubs describe, and the two are not interchangeable. Leisure sites only. The set is the [CEE cable reel comparison](/hub/sockets-and-extension-leads/cee-cable-reel). Products Compared did not camp with these reels. The pitch socket is a blue 16 A outlet

On a UK club pitch the outlet is a blue socket to BS EN 60309-2, at least 16 A. Pitch outlets are interlocked, each with its own overcurrent device and a 30 mA RCD. That equipment belongs to the site. The Caravan and Motorhome Club puts the pitch socket within 20 m. Plug the van end first, then the bollard, and take the lead when you leave. A yellow 110 V plug does not belong in this blue socket.

The van lead is 25 m and 2.5 mm²

The lead the Caravan and Motorhome Club describes is continuous, 25 m plus or minus 2 m, at least 2.5 mm², with blue BS EN 60309-2 connectors and a sheath you can see on the grass. No joins. An IET note on regulation 721.55.2.6 calls for 25 m ± 2 m of H05RN-F or H07RN-F. If you have 1.5 mm², unwind it fully and reduce the load. The general unwind rule is on the how to use a cable reel page.

A 10 m reel with UK sockets is a different purchase

The reel for kettles and chargers is the VonLux HAUSUKA774A, ASIN B0G4LQBQXS, at £33.90, with 4.4 from 21 UK reviews. It has a 16 A hook-up plug, four UK 13 A sockets, 10 m of cable the bullets call 1.5 mm², a thermal cut-out, and IP44. It is the best value when you want British plugs from a bollard, and it is not the hook-up cable the clubs specify. The listing does not print a voltage. The title says waterproof and the bullets say IP44. The buying guide sets 1.5 mm² against H07RN-F.

Two CEE sockets do not replace the inlet lead

The orange Brennenstuhl Garant, B08W1Q9YN2, is £126.32, with 4.7 from 84 ratings, two CEE sockets, and H07RN-F 3G2.5. One review says the cable is under 23 m, and a reviewer still needed a separate lead for the van inlet. The £32.72 Brennenstuhl with camping in the title is 110 V CEE. The bollard is not. The best CEE cable reel page says which drum fits UK plugs and which fits blue CEE.

Common questions

What lead does the caravan club expect?
The Caravan and Motorhome Club describes 25 m ± 2 m, at least 2.5 mm², with blue BS EN 60309-2 connectors and a sheath you can see. No joins on the pitch. The IET buyer point from the caravan rules matches that length and calls for H05RN-F or H07RN-F, from the van inlet to the bollard. A drum of UK sockets is an extra, for appliances.
Is 10 m of 1.5 mm² enough for a pitch?
It can feed a light load if you unwind it, which is the camping club’s line on 1.5 mm². It is short of the 20 m between van and bollard, and short of 25 m ± 2 m at 2.5 mm². The VonLux reel is that 10 m, 1.5 mm² drum at £33.90. Use it in the awning after the van already has a proper lead.
Can you join two short leads?
The club wants a single cable, because a join can sit in a puddle even when each half is splashproof. If you are short, replace the lead with one continuous 25 m cable. The same objection applies to a 13 A joiner left outside the awning.
What is the difference between a socket reel and the inlet lead?
The inlet lead is blue at both ends and plugs into the caravan. A socket reel such as the VonLux takes a hook-up plug and offers UK 13 A sockets. You can supply the van from the bollard and, separately, run the reel for the awning if the pitch has capacity. One product does not do both jobs because both can be blue at the bollard.
Does the orange 25 m CEE reel plug straight into the caravan?
It has two CEE sockets and a CEE plug, on H07RN-F 3G2.5, at £126.32. A reviewer still needed a separate lead for the van inlet, and one review says the cable is under 23 m. There is no UK socket on that face. Budget for a coupler lead if the inlet needs one.
Should you unwind a hook-up that is longer than the pitch?
Spare length stays in a loose run, because cable left on a reel runs warmer. A 25 m lead on a 12 m pitch is normal. Wind it when the load is off. The same applies to the VonLux reel before a kettle. A 110 V reel labelled camping is still 110 V CEE. Leave it for a transformer. The bollard takes a blue hook-up lead.
