Outdoor remote control socket UK

Updated: 23 October 2026

You want the garden lights or a water feature off from the kitchen, and a white plug-in adaptor looks quick. An outdoor remote control socket UK homes actually need, once rain hits the face, is a fixed weather-rated socket, not an indoor radio adaptor left outside. The [wireless sockets comparison](/hub/sockets-and-extension-leads/wireless-sockets) is the indoor packs, prices saved on 21 October 2026. This page is the stop. Peter F. used those listings, the Knightsbridge OP9R sheet and Electrical Safety First. No lab test was run, and no amazon.co.uk price was saved for the outdoor socket. Indoor packs stop at the door

The plug-in sets here are for dry rooms. HBN's example B088WHF5YH says indoor use, not bathrooms and not moisture. A white adaptor in a plastic box on the patio is still an indoor product. DEWENWILS B07SR3KL8D shows IP65 beside indoor bullets, plus Wi-Fi and 12 V rows that fight the description. If rain will hit the face, stop. Indoor checks sit on the remote control plug socket buying guide.

What an outdoor remote socket is

The example is the Knightsbridge OP9R, a fixed 2-gang outdoor socket with a key fob. ML Accessories lists IP66 and IK06, 230 V, 13 A, 2,990 W and Class I, so it must be earthed, with a stated range up to 30 m. The fob takes two CR2016 cells, not the 12 V 23A cell in indoor handsets. The manual says install to BS 7671, and ask a qualified electrician if in doubt.

Who should fit it

Adding the point is wiring, not pairing. The manual points at BS 7671 and a qualified electrician when you are unsure. A DIY Doctor guide argues for at least IP66, a 30 mA RCD and a Part P electrician with a minor works certificate. Treat that as a trade path, not as the statute. Class I needs the earthing the instructions describe. The learn button on an indoor pack, on the how to use a remote control socket page, does not install this faceplate.

Range, price, and lights that stay indoors

Up to 30 m on the OP9R is the maker's figure. The datasheet says greater than 30 m. An app is a different product, on the remote control socket vs smart plug page. No amazon.co.uk price for the OP9R was saved. Trade counters on 21 October 2026 showed about £38.58 and about £45.43.

Common questions

Can I leave a plug-in remote socket in the garden?
No. The indoor packs here are not outdoor kit, even when a review describes lights switched from indoors. A plastic box around a white adaptor is not an IP rating. The IP65 cell on DEWENWILS B07SR3KL8D conflicts with indoor bullets and is not approval to leave it in the rain. Use a fixed weather-rated socket if the face will get wet.
What is actually made for outside?
A fixed IP-rated outdoor socket. The example is the Knightsbridge OP9R: IP66, IK06, Class I, 230 V, 13 A, 2,990 W, 433 MHz, two CR2016 cells in the fob, and a stated range up to 30 m. The datasheet lists 0.2 W standby. It must be earthed and installed to BS 7671. It is not one of the plug-in ASINs in the indoor comparison.
Do I need an electrician?
Yes, if you are adding an outdoor point or you are unsure of the wiring. The OP9R manual says install to BS 7671 and the Building Regulations, and consult a qualified electrician if in doubt. A trade guide also points at a registered electrician, a 30 mA RCD and a minor works certificate. That guide is not the statute text. Pressing the fob is the part you do afterwards.
What IP rating should I look for?
The OP9R is sold as IP66. The manual warns that a drain hole can reduce that rating under jets, so do not add holes. A trade article argues for at least IP66 outdoors. That is practical guidance, not a regulation quoted as law here. An IP65 or IP53 cell on an indoor plug-in listing is a different claim. Read the rating on the fixed product you are fitting.
Will the fob work from the kitchen?
The OP9R states up to 30 m, and the datasheet says greater than 30 m, on 433 MHz. That is the maker's claim, not a test through your walls. Indoor packs print similar figures and still vary. One indoor review managed about 20 m. Try the fob from the chair you care about before you rely on it after dark. It is a radio button, not an app that works from the shop.
Is the DEWENWILS IP65 row enough?
No. B07SR3KL8D is an indoor-style five-pack whose table also says IP65, Wi-Fi and 12 V. Those cells fight the bullets. They are not an outdoor certificate. The indoor comparison keeps the pack for lamps and flags the clash. A garden socket is a fixed outlet in the OP9R class, installed properly, not a white adaptor with a hopeful IP number on the table.
What does the Knightsbridge socket cost?
No amazon.co.uk price was saved, so this page does not invent one. Trade counters on 21 October 2026 showed about £38.58 and about £45.43. Those are trade-counter prices, not the amazon.co.uk shelf, and they may move. Indoor three-packs in the saved files were about £17 to £20. That lower figure buys a dry-room adaptor. It is not a cheaper version of an IP66 outdoor face.
