How to pair a remote control socket

Updated: 23 October 2026

The carton is open and you want the handset to light a lamp before anything goes behind the sofa. How to pair a remote control socket starts with the leaflet in your box, not with one timing for every brand. Most packs in the [wireless sockets comparison](/hub/sockets-and-extension-leads/wireless-sockets) are described as ready before you touch a learn button. This page is the cell, a lamp you can see, and the learn step only when you are adding a socket. Peter F. used the saved listings, an HBN manual example and a Brennenstuhl note. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Before you press anything

Fit the battery before you call the socket dead. These handsets commonly take one 12 V 23A alkaline cell, also sold as A23 or MN21. Match the polarity marks. A flat cell looks like a receiver that will not click. One HBN review found the handset battery dead on arrival. Use a dry indoor socket and a lamp you can watch. A public HBN example, B088WHF5YH, says indoor only. If you are still choosing, the remote control plug socket buying guide is the label check.

First switch-on

Press the button whose number already matches the plug. Pre-paired is the normal case. If the lamp lights, stop. Do not enter learn mode on a pack that already works. If the lamp stays dark, check the wall switch, the lamp's own switch and the cell. One HBN three-pack review said socket number 1 would not switch. Which pack suits the room is on the best remote control sockets page.

The learn control

Use learn when you are adding a receiver of the same brand, or when a pair has clearly failed. An HBN manual example says hold the side button for about three seconds until the light flashes, press ON while it flashes, then test. Work on one socket at a time.

After a power cut, and when to stop

Several HBN bullets say the outlet stays off when the mains returns. A dark lamp can be the designed state, waiting for ON. Only listings that say stays off earn that claim. A pump or a router that must restart alone is the wrong load if the lamp stays dark until the handset. Stop if the body is hot, scorched, buzzing or smelling of burning. Unplug at the wall. The outdoor remote control socket page is where a garden light needs a different product.

Common questions

Do I have to pair it before first use?
Usually no. Numbered plugs in the HBN reviews already match the handset. Fit the cell, use a dry socket, and press the button for the lamp you can see. Open learn mode only if that test fails, or if you are adding a socket of the same brand. Learn mode on a working pair can clear it. If your model differs, the leaflet in the box is the timing that counts.
Which battery, and which way round?
One 12 V 23A alkaline cell is the usual handset battery, also called A23 or MN21. Remove any film and follow the polarity marks. A flat cell imitates a dead socket. One saved HBN review found the battery dead on arrival. If a new cell is fitted correctly and the lamp stays dark, look at the receiver next, not another battery brand.
How do I add a socket of the same brand?
Learn on the new receiver only. The HBN example is a three-second hold until the light flashes, then ON on the remote, then a lamp test. Clear a wrong pair with a longer hold only if your sheet says so. Do one socket at a time. An HBN five-pack review needed a reprogram after unclear instructions. Your leaflet overrides the three-second example if the timing differs.
Will it come back on after a power cut?
Often it stays off, and that can be correct. Several HBN bullets and the HBN manual example say the outlet stays off when power returns, so press ON before you assume a fault. Brennenstuhl says the stored button map can survive a cut even when the on or off state does not. Test with a lamp. Do not put a pump, a recorder or a router on a pack whose test stays dark until the handset.
What if nothing clicks?
Check the wall socket, the lamp's own switch and a fresh 12 V cell the right way round before you hold learn. A silent pre-paired pack is not fixed by pairing it to another brand. One HBN review had a single numbered socket that would not switch. If the body is hot, smells, buzzes or trips the breaker, unplug it and stop. Do not keep holding learn on a warm casing.
Can an HBN remote pair a DEWENWILS socket?
Not from these listings. Learning is described inside one brand, not across DEWENWILS, HBN, Syantek and SURAIELEC. A second pack bought for its handset is a guess. Add a receiver the bullets say can learn, and follow that leaflet. A Wi-Fi row in a specification table is not a pairing method. It conflicts with the handset description.
When do I unplug and stop?
Stop if the plug or receiver is hot, scorched, buzzing or smelling of burning, or if a breaker trips again. Unplug at the wall and leave it out. Do not finish by putting an indoor adaptor in a box in the garden. A short lead, a weak range or a socket that failed after months is not another learn cycle. If the wall socket itself runs hot, the next step is a registered electrician, not a new handset.
