HomeKit smart plug buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have an iPhone, you want a lamp or charger on Siri, and amazon.co.uk is full of smart plugs that never mention Apple Home. This HomeKit smart plug buying guide is the pass-or-fail checklist before you open a product table: real HomeKit or Matter wording, a home hub and 2.4 GHz, the load and whether the body blocks the next socket, then indoor versus outdoor and plug-in versus a fitted faceplate. The [HomeKit socket comparison](/hub/sockets-and-extension-leads/homekit-socket) keeps the eight amazon.co.uk rows compared on 20 October 2026. We did not lab-test the plugs. A purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What counts as a HomeKit socket here

A HomeKit socket here means a UK Type G (BS 1363) accessory you switch from Apple Home, Siri or Shortcuts, not every Wi-Fi plug on the search page. Matter over Wi-Fi, on the meross MSS315 packs and the Amazon Basics plug, joins through a Matter controller. The meross outdoor twin uses a HomeKit code, not a Matter QR. Lightwave LP42MK2 names HomeKit and needs a Lightwave L2 Link Plus. The BG Nexus double names Siri and does not say HomeKit. Zigbee reaches Apple Home only through a bridge sold separately, as on the THIRDREALITY four-pack. Eve Energy is not among these eight rows. If the listing never says HomeKit, or Matter with Apple Home, stop before you compare prices.

Hub and 2.4 GHz before you pay

Away-from-home control needs a HomePod, HomePod mini or Apple TV left powered on the home Wi-Fi. The meross Matter listings name Apple TV 4K (2nd or 3rd generation) or HomePod mini, with iOS or iPadOS 16.1 or later. Apple also says iOS 18 or later can add a Matter accessory without a hub, while a hub remains recommended. The kept listings still say a hub is required. A local add is not remote control. These Wi-Fi rows need 2.4 GHz. A combined 2.4/5 GHz name is a common setup snag in UK reviews. None of the eight is Thread. Protocol choice is on the Matter or HomeKit Wi-Fi page.

Load, form, and the next socket

UK plugs in this set are typically 13 A, roughly 3,000 W at 230 V. Smart switching does not add capacity. The Amazon Basics plug leaves voltage, current and wattage blank, so you cannot check 13 A on the page. The meross single and two-pack print 13 A beside a two-prong Type A line. The listings do not resolve that clash. The four-pack does not carry the Type A line. Reviews say the mini body leaves the next socket free. The two-pack and four-pack put meter history in the meross app. The single has energy in the title only. None of those rows has an IP rating.

Indoor, outdoor, or a new faceplate

An unrated mini stays indoors. The meross outdoor block is the IP44 twin, cover closed, 2.4 GHz only, and the listing bans pumps. Cover detail is on the outdoor or indoor HomeKit socket page. Plug-in adaptors suit renters. The BG Nexus is a 13 A double, 3,120 W, with a 25 mm back box and BG Home on 2.4 GHz, no hub claimed. Lightwave is a stainless 2-gang at 3,000 W, HomeKit in the title, and its own hub. In England and Wales, Part P covers fixed wiring. Call an electrician for a damaged back box, a new circuit, or uncertain earthing. Scotland and Northern Ireland are not the same scheme, so do not copy that rule across the UK without local guidance.

When the checklist is done

When the Apple wording, the hub, the 2.4 GHz band and the load all match the job, open the eight-row table on the main comparison. This checklist does not crown a winner. If one of those gates fails, stop rather than shopping on price.

Common questions

Does “works with Siri” on the BG socket mean it is a HomeKit accessory?
No. The BG Nexus lines name Alexa, Hey Google and Siri. They do not say HomeKit. Control is the BG Home app on 2.4 GHz with no hub claimed. One UK review asks for HomeKit support to be added. Treat it as a fitted Wi-Fi faceplate with Siri named, not as a proven HomeKit row.
Do I need a HomePod or Apple TV before a Matter plug will switch from the sofa, and before it will switch when I am out?
For away-from-home control and automations, yes: leave a HomePod, HomePod mini or Apple TV as a home hub on the home Wi-Fi. Apple also notes that iOS 18 or later can add and control Matter accessories without a hub, while a hub remains recommended. The kept Matter listings still say a hub is required. Local switching on a recent iPhone is not the same as remote control.
Why do the listings say 2.4 GHz only?
Matter over Wi-Fi and the HomeKit Wi-Fi outdoor block in this set join 2.4 GHz, not 5 GHz. A phone left on a 5 GHz-only or combined mesh name often fails pairing. Thread Matter is a different radio path and is not stocked in these eight rows.
Is 13 A enough for a kettle or a fan heater, and what is missing on the Amazon Basics spec block?
13 A is about 3,000 W at 230 V for a typical UK plug. Stay inside the printed rating and avoid daisy-chained extensions for high loads. The Amazon Basics Matter plug leaves voltage, current and wattage blank, so you cannot verify amps from the listing. Test it on a lamp first.
Can I put the £7.99 Matter plug in the garden if the meross outdoor block is £39.99?
No. The Amazon Basics and meross mini plugs have no IP rating in the kept listings. The outdoor job in this set is the IP44 meross twin block, used with covers closed. Detail sits on the outdoor or indoor page.
When is a plug-in adaptor the right buy, and when does a Lightwave or BG faceplate need an electrician?
Choose plug-in when you rent or will not open the wall. Choose a faceplate when you are replacing a double and accept the wiring risk. Call an electrician for a damaged back box, a new circuit, or uncertain earthing. Lightwave also needs its own Link Plus hub.
Will Apple Home show energy history, or only what the meross app stores?
Live power often appears in Apple Home. The meross two-pack and four-pack put historical graphs in the meross app, from an internal meter. Matter does not guarantee full energy history inside Home. The single has energy monitoring in the title only. Amazon Basics has no energy line on the listing.
