Add a Matter plug to Apple Home

Updated: 23 October 2026

The plug is on the wall, Siri works on the sofa, and the Home app goes blank when you leave the house. That pattern is usually a missing home hub, not a dead outlet. This page shows how to add a Matter plug to Apple Home on an iPhone or iPad, what the hub does for remote control, and how to recover a plug that will not join or later shows no response. The [HomeKit socket comparison](/hub/sockets-and-extension-leads/homekit-socket) is where the eight rows sit. We follow Apple’s public set-up notes and the listing lines. We did not lab-test pairing. Add it in the Home app

Add accessories from an iPhone or iPad. A Mac cannot add them. Power the plug, stand nearby with Bluetooth on, open Home, tap Add, then Add Accessory. Scan the Matter QR or HomeKit code, or hold the phone near the accessory if Apple offers that path. Allow it to join, assign a room and a name, then finish. If it is already paired in another app, use More options. The original QR will not work a second time. A multipack QR can enrol the pack in one scan. That is an if on Apple’s page, not a promise that every meross box includes it. Those boxes list plugs and a manual. Add plugs one by one if each has its own code. The outdoor block uses the same flow with its HomeKit code, still on 2.4 GHz.

The hub that makes away-from-home work

Local control beside the router is not control from work. A HomePod or HomePod mini becomes a home hub when set up. An Apple TV becomes one when you assign it to a room. Only the home owner can add it, and it must stay powered on the home Wi-Fi. If the app says Home Hub Required or Software Update Required, update the hub and power-cycle it. The kept Matter listings still say a hub is required. iOS 18 may add a Matter accessory without one. Remote control still needs the hub. The outdoor listing names an iPad. Apple’s current guidance says an iPad is not a supported home hub. Use a HomePod, HomePod mini or Apple TV. Confirm the plug still answers away from the router. See the HomeKit socket buying guide before you buy.

When the plug will not join

If the Home app says the network is incompatible, the phone is usually on a band the accessory does not use. These plugs are 2.4 GHz only. Move the phone onto a 2.4 GHz name, or briefly separate bands if a combined mesh name blocks discovery. Keep Bluetooth on, update iOS or iPadOS, and confirm the account can add accessories. If the code was already used, or the accessory lived in another home, reset it with the manufacturer’s method, then add it again. This comparison does not record a button-hold time for meross or Amazon Basics. Do not invent one. A claimed plug will not behave like a new unit until that reset succeeds. Finish any firmware update in the maker’s app before you assume Matter itself is broken.

Offline after it had been working

If a plug later shows no response, follow Apple’s order: Bluetooth on, restart the plug, update firmware in the maker app, restart the hub, remove the accessory and add it again after a reset, then restart the router. Keep the phone, plug and hub on the same Wi-Fi. Lightwave pairs with a Lightwave L2 Link Plus, not a bare HomeKit code. THIRDREALITY stays on Zigbee until Smart Bridge MZ1, sold separately, is present. The BG Nexus names Siri without HomeKit. Pair the outdoor block the same HomeKit way. Sharing one Matter plug with Alexa is on the Matter or HomeKit Wi-Fi page.

What to check before you blame the plug

If it works beside the router and fails when you leave, power a HomePod, HomePod mini or Apple TV as the home hub before you replace the plug. If Add Accessory says the network is incompatible, move the phone to 2.4 GHz. If the code was already used, reset with the maker’s method and add it again. A Mac, an iPad used as the hub, or a Zigbee pack without its bridge will not finish this flow.

Common questions

How do I add a Matter plug in the Home app?
On an iPhone or iPad, power the plug, open Home, tap Add, then Add Accessory, scan the Matter code or hold the phone nearby, allow network joining, then assign a room and a name. If it already lives in another Matter app, use More options.
Can I add it from a Mac?
No. Apple’s add-accessory guidance is iPhone or iPad only. Use one of those devices on the home network, with Bluetooth on, and stand near the plug while you scan.
The plug switches beside the router and shows no response when I am out. What is missing?
A home hub left powered at home, typically a HomePod, HomePod mini or Apple TV assigned to a room. Local success does not prove remote control. Check Home Hubs and Bridges, and keep the hub on the home Wi-Fi.
What does network incompatible mean on a 2.4 GHz-only plug?
The phone is on a Wi-Fi band the accessory cannot use. Move to 2.4 GHz or separate a combined network name, then try Add Accessory again. These Matter and HomeKit Wi-Fi rows do not join 5 GHz.
The code was already used, or the accessory was in another home. What now?
Reset the plug using the manufacturer’s instructions, then add it as new. Do not expect the original QR to enrol a claimed accessory without that reset. This page does not print a button-hold time for these listings.
Does one QR code add every plug in a meross multipack?
Only if the pack includes a multi-device QR code, which Apple describes as a possibility. The boxes list plugs and a manual. Scan what you have, and add plugs individually if each one has its own code.
Why will the Lightwave socket not appear from a HomeKit code alone?
Voice and app control need a Lightwave L2 Link Plus. Pairing is with that Link Plus, not a stand-alone HomeKit sticker path. A HomePod does not replace that hub.
The outdoor listing mentions an iPad as the remote device. Does current Apple guidance still treat an iPad as the home hub?
The listing still names an iPad among remote devices. Apple’s current hub-error article says an iPad is not a supported home hub on the latest Apple Home. Prefer a HomePod, HomePod mini or Apple TV.
