Impact sockets for wheel nuts: size, wall and torque

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are on the driveway with a 1/2 inch impact wrench and a wheel nut in an alloy recess. Impact sockets for wheel nuts earn their keep only if the size matches, the wall enters the recess, and the gun is not the last word. Peter F., the DIY & tools editor, wrote this on 20 October 2026 from the amazon.co.uk listings in the [impact sockets comparison](/hub/sockets-and-extension-leads/impact-sockets). We did not remove a wheel in a lab, and we will not quote one torque for every UK car. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Fitting steps are on [how to use impact sockets](/hub/sockets-and-extension-leads/impact-sockets/sub/impact-sockets-how-to-use).

Sizes you actually meet

On many UK family cars the hex is 17 mm, 19 mm or 21 mm. Some are 22 mm. That is a pattern, not a promise your car is 19 mm. Check the socket that already fits, or measure the flats. A locking nut needs its key. The nearest hex will round the lock, and that is a tyre shop, not a bigger gun. One KIRXST buyer received two 16 mm sockets and no 17 mm, so that box was not a wheel set that day.

Recess, thin wall and sleeves

A thick wall hits the alloy before it reaches the flats. Thin-wall impact sockets are the design response, and they are not a thin chrome hand socket. Sleeves lower the chance of a scratch. They do not correct a wrong size. BILITOOLS describes rotatable sleeves and a knockout rod. Deep sockets cover a stud that would hit the roof of a shallow socket. Milwaukee is the shallow example here. Try the fit with the gun off: the socket should sit on the flats.

WORKPRO W003129 is £12.99, 4.7 from 132 reviews, with only four texts. The bullets name 17, 19 and 21 mm, chrome molybdenum and a 3 inch extension. It is the best value pick for that short list. There is no 22 mm. BILITOOLS is £33.99, 4.9 from 32 reviews and no texts, with 22 mm, thin walls and sleeves in the bullets. The piece-count field prints 1, so read the four-socket list. Ginour includes the wheel sizes through 32 mm and has the largest review count, and the wall may still be too thick. Who should skip which set is on the best impact socket set page.

Undo with the gun, tighten with a wrench

Crack the nuts loose before you jack, with the tyre on the ground, in short bursts. If nothing moves, stop for oil, the locking key or a breaker bar. KATSU notes include a crack on a third wheel nut. Start the new nuts by hand, run them snug, then stop. The last tightness is a torque wrench at the maker’s figure. We will not invent 110 Nm or 140 Nm for every car. Under-tightened nuts let a wheel shift. Over-tightened nuts warp discs and snap studs. A torn wall after the first corner means you change socket before the other wheels.

When to stop and call a tyre shop

Stop if the locking key is missing, if a stud spins, if the socket cracks on a nut that is still tight, or if the flats are too rounded to bite. A tyre fitter can remove a lock or finish the torque. Also stop if the only fitting socket is a chrome hand socket and you were going to use the gun. How that fails is on impact sockets vs chrome sockets. Drive and alloy order come before price.

Common questions

Do I need a deep or a thin-wall socket for alloy wheels?
You need whichever seats on the flats inside the recess. Thin-wall sockets, often as flip pieces with sleeves, enter narrow alloy holes that a thick wall cannot. Deep sockets cover studs that would bottom out in a shallow socket. Milwaukee’s shallow set suits open family-car nuts in reviewer comments, and it will not suit a long stud. Try the fit with the power off.
Are flip lug-nut sets enough for one car?
Yes, if that car’s nuts are among the two or three sizes on the flip and you are only changing wheels. WORKPRO covers 17, 19 and 21 mm. BILITOOLS adds 22 mm, thin walls and sleeves on the listing. Neither replaces a deep metric set for brakes and suspension. Check a second car before a shared boot kit is the only kit.
Will a thick socket wall fail to enter the recess?
Yes, that happens. The wall hits the alloy before the flats engage, and you either scar the rim or round the nut. A thin-wall flip socket is the usual fix. A plastic sleeve reduces metal-to-paint contact and can still tear. If the thick socket from a deep set will not enter, do not force it with a longer extension. Change socket.
Do plastic sleeves stop rim scratches?
They lower the chance, which is why BILITOOLS describes rotatable sleeves. They do not guarantee a mark-free rim if the gun is cocked, the size is wrong, or the sleeve has already split. Keep the square in line with the stud, and stop if you see plastic shredding into the recess. A correct thin wall matters more than a perfect rim.
When should I call a tyre shop?
Call when the locking key is lost, a stud spins, the socket cracks on a nut that is still tight, or you have no torque figure and no torque wrench. Also call when the wheel was removed and you are not confident the nuts are seated. Those are ordinary workshop jobs. They are cheaper than driving on a wheel that was finished by guesswork with the gun.
