How to use an adapter plug with switch on a UK wall

Updated: 22 October 2026

The switched block is already in the wall, and you want a lamp, a router and a charger on it without tripping the fuse or levering it out of a loose twin. Safe use is one 13 A path, a seated body, switches as isolation, a like-for-like fuse, and a stop at the first smell, spark or scorch. The [adapter plug with switch comparison](/hub/sockets-and-extension-leads/adapter-plug-with-switch) lists the models. Read the [adapter plug with switch buying guide](/hub/sockets-and-extension-leads/adapter-plug-with-switch/sub/adapter-plug-with-switch-buying-guide) before you buy. There was no test of your wall plate. Follow each appliance rating plate. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Add the load before you switch on

Everything switched on at the adaptor shares one 13 A ceiling. A rule of thumb at 230 V is about 3,000 W total. Lines of 3,120 W or 3,250 W are that same path at 240 V or 250 V. Which? notes that a kettle alone can use most of one socket’s budget. Count what is switched on, not how many sockets exist. A kettle, toaster, microwave together, fan heater, iron or washing machine belongs in the wall socket on its own. London Fire Brigade says that plainly. Scottish Fire and Rescue Service adds that unplugging is the sure way to know a circuit is dead. A block switch isolates a low load. It is not permission to share a kettle. Electrical Safety First publishes indicative appliance ratings. Use those, not a guessed figure for a router. If the sum is unclear, leave one device off.

Seat the block so it stays put

A heavy block can pull out of a shallow socket or twist on the pins. Which? and UK reviewers in this category describe that failure. Wide four-gang plates weigh more than compact three-ways. Pro-Elec’s four-gang, B00LGWNJZO, often draws comments about missing spacer screws. The three-gang, B001KMR5QO, sometimes gets hand-fitted long screws in reviews. SUPHOST and Mscien supply brackets, yet reviews still dispute screw length. Test that on your wall. On a twin plate, decide whether the neighbour must stay free. Side outlets, a hanging T-shape, or TESSAN’s short lead are different answers. TESSAN’s switch field is blank, so it is a fit option, not the switched template. Do not daisy-chain. Electrical Safety First allows one extension device per wall socket. Push the plug fully home. If the block droops, fix that before you load it. When the appliances cannot reach, use adapter plug with switch vs extension lead.

What the switches do

Individual switches let you kill one outlet while the others stay fed from the same 13 A supply. That suits a lamp you want dark while a router stays on. A neon is an “outlet live” lamp. It is not evidence that a surge stage is healthy. That split is on surge protection on an adapter plug with switch. Switches do not allocate 13 A per gang. Two outlets left on still share one total. Masterplug’s thermal indicator, where the listing states it, is a different claim from a Pro-Elec neon. Read the line on your box.

Change the fuse only with the same rating

If the adaptor’s fuse blows, unplug the block before you open the holder. Fit the same BS 1362 rating marked on the unit, typically 13 A, not a 3 A fuse from a lamp flex. Electrical Safety First is explicit about like-for-like replacement. If a second fuse blows on one sound appliance, treat the wall socket as a fault. A spare fuse in a SUPHOST pack is not permission to fit a higher rating. Status 3WAISB110 may ship with a fuse even when the amazon.co.uk table omits amps. Read the cover you receive.

When to unplug and get help

Unplug and stop if you smell hot plastic, see sparks, or find scorch marks. London Fire Brigade and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service treat those as stop signs, not cues to buy a bigger adaptor. A warm plug on a low load can mean poor contact from a sagging block. Fix the seating before you add watts. Call a registered electrician if the socket is cracked, if the faceplate is hot with the adaptor unplugged, or if the consumer unit trips repeatedly on one appliance. Tenants should report a scorched outlet rather than stack another cube. If the problem is reach, use one fused lead. Do not join two extension devices on the same socket.

Common questions

How do I add up what is plugged into the adaptor?
Use each appliance’s rating plate for the items that will be on together. Compare that total with about 3,000 W and 13 A on the one wall socket. Keep kettles and heaters off the block entirely. Count only what is switched on, not every empty outlet. Electrical Safety First publishes indicative ratings if a plate is missing. Do not guess a figure for a router or a charger.
Is 13 A per switch or for the whole block?
For the whole block. Switches only remove an outlet from the live total. They do not multiply amps. Two appliances left on still share the same 13 A path even if a third switch is off. A printed 3,120 W or 3,250 W line is that same path at a higher stated voltage, not a second allowance.
Can I leave a kettle on one socket of a three-way?
No. Treat the kettle as a whole-socket load in the wall, not on a multiway adaptor. London Fire Brigade puts kettle-class heat on the wall socket on its own. A kettle can use most of the roughly 3,000 W guide before you add a toaster, a heater or anything else. The same rule covers an iron, an air fryer and a fan heater.
What are the switches for if the wall switch is already on?
They isolate one outlet at the block while the others remain energised. That is handy for a lamp you want off and a router you want left on, on a low-power setup. They are not a second fuse and they are not surge protection. A neon beside the switch usually means that outlet is live.
How do I change the fuse, and which rating?
Unplug the adaptor from the wall, open the fuse access, and fit the same BS 1362 rating marked on the body, usually 13 A on these blocks. Do not use a 3 A fuse from a lamp flex, and do not fit a higher rating because a spare came in the box. Plug back in only if you understand why the fuse blew. A second failure on one sound appliance is an electrician’s job.
What if the block sags out of a twin socket?
Do not run it half inserted. Add the support screws if the design includes them, choose a layout that clears the twin, or move to a short-lead product such as TESSAN when clearance is the problem. Which? notes that plug weight can pull a block out of the wall. Fix the seating before you add more watts. Warmth on a low load often means resistance at the pins.
Can I plug this adaptor into an extension lead?
No. Electrical Safety First advises one extension device per socket. Daisy-chaining an adaptor into a lead hides the fuse you must inspect and adds mass on the contacts. If you need reach, use one fused lead long enough for the job. If you need outlets at the wall, use one block that fits the plate. Do not use both on the same outlet.
