Adapter plug with switch buying guide for UK sockets

Updated: 22 October 2026

One UK socket has to feed a lamp, a router and a charger, without a flex across the floor. Check the fuse and the shared current first, then shutters and switches, then fit, and only then surge or USB. The [adapter plug with switch comparison](/hub/sockets-and-extension-leads/adapter-plug-with-switch) holds every row, from amazon.co.uk on 19 October 2026. There was no lab test. What you are buying

A UK adapter plug with switch is still one plug into one BS 1363 socket. It is not a second circuit. Domestic adaptors for British plugs are meant to be shuttered and fused under BS 1363-3. Travel adaptors under BS 8546 are a different product. Regulation 35 of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 requires a plug-in device for UK home use to suit a BS 1363 outlet. You gain outlet count at the wall, and you can kill one appliance without unplugging the rest. You do not gain headroom for a kettle and a toaster together. The 13 A figure is the total for everything switched on, not 13 A per switch. A rule of thumb at 230 V is about 3,000 W on that path. Lines such as 3,120 W or 3,250 W are the same 13 A written at 240 V or 250 V.

The four checks that come first

Start with the fuse. The Plugs and Sockets etc. (Safety) Regulations 1994 require a BS 1362 fuse in a standard UK plug, and Electrical Safety First says to replace like with like. Several rows say fused in the item type and then leave the amp blank. If the table is silent, read the fuse label on the unit. Shutters belong on a proper British adaptor. Treat missing shutters as a stop. Switches matter because they isolate one load. A neon means that outlet is on, not that a surge stage is healthy. That split is on surge protection on an adapter plug with switch. Then read the combined amp or watt line. Pro-Elec PL10031 prints 13 A, 230 V and 3,120 W. Status S3WASPSCX2 prints 13 A and 250 V. Status 3WAISB110 leaves amps blank. A switch does not raise the rating.

How it sits on a UK twin socket

A sound listing can still fail your plate. A T-shaped three-gang may hang below the socket, or it may cover the second outlet on a shallow twin. UK reviews disagree by wall box. Four-way plates add weight. Which? notes that plug weight can pull a block out of the wall, which is why spacer screws matter. Pro-Elec’s three-gang, B001KMR5QO, often gets praise for screws fitted by hand. PL10031 often gets the opposite comment: no spacers in the box. Side sockets help when the block is deep. Masterplug B004I5BQ42 puts outlets on the front and sides. TESSAN B092M738G8 uses a short lead so the body sits beside the twin, and its switch field is blank, so it is a fit story. If clearance is the bottleneck, measure once and read adapter plug with switch vs extension lead.

What to leave until last

Surge and USB come after fuse, current, switches and fit. Ten of eleven rows claim surge or similar language. Only LENCENT B0B5X8L9GB states joules, 350 J. You cannot rank those bullets as if they were tested equally. LENCENT splits USB-A at 2.4 A and USB-C at 3 A. TESSAN states PD 20 W on one USB-C port. USB watts do not increase the 13 A total. About £16.99 for LENCENT buys a joule line, a 13 A fuse and two switched AC sockets. About £5.99 for Status 3WAISB110 buys switches and a large review file with a missing amp field. Read the loading steps before you switch the block on.

When to stop shopping for an adaptor

Stop when the load is kettle-class. Electrical Safety First, London Fire Brigade and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service put high-power heat and motor loads in the wall socket on their own. A kettle can use most of the 3,000 W guide before you add anything else. An iron, air fryer, washing machine or fan heater belongs in the same group. Stop when the fixed socket is hot, cracked or smells. A second blown fuse on one sound appliance is an electrician’s job. If you live on adaptors every day, ask a registered electrician about extra sockets. BS 1363-3:2023 exists, but the 2016 edition remains in transition until 30 June 2026, and none of these listings print “2023”. When the checklist passes, sort by outlet count, joules, USB or rotation, not by stars alone.

Common questions

Does each socket on a three-way adaptor get 13 A?
No. Thirteen amps is the shared limit for everything that is on at once through that one wall socket. Switches only remove one outlet from the sum. They do not create three allowances. A watt line of 3,120 W or 3,250 W is the same path written at 240 V or 250 V, not extra capacity beyond about 3,000 W at the UK nominal 230 V.
What fuse should a UK multiway adaptor have?
A BS 1362 fuse marked to match the adaptor, typically 13 A for these blocks. The Plugs and Sockets etc. (Safety) Regulations 1994 require that fuse in a standard UK plug assembly. Replace only with the same rating after you have unplugged, as Electrical Safety First advises. If the listing leaves the amp blank, read the fuse cover on the unit you receive.
Are shutters required on a British adaptor?
Proper UK adaptors for British plugs are specified to be shuttered under the BS 1363-3 family. Treat an adaptor that behaves like an open cube as out of scope for permanent use at home. You do not need the full standard text to apply that stop. Travel adaptors under BS 8546 are a different product from these domestic multiway blocks.
Will a wide four-way block the other half of a twin socket?
It depends on the plate and the body. Reviews in this set split both ways. Measure your twin plate. Side outlets, as on Masterplug B004I5BQ42, or a short lead, as on TESSAN B092M738G8, are different answers to the same clearance problem. Wide four-gangs add weight, and missing spacer screws make a loose socket worse.
When is a fixed extra socket the real answer?
When you rely on a block every day, when the loads are legitimate but the room lacks sockets, or when the wall outlet itself is damaged, hot or cracked. A registered electrician installs fixed outlets. An adaptor is a multiplier on one existing path, not a second circuit. Tenants should report a scorched outlet rather than stack another cube.
