Gira socket buying guide: plug, frame, then finish

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have searched Gira socket on amazon.co.uk and the results mix white inserts and anthracite outlets. This Gira socket buying guide puts the checks in the order that stops a Schuko part landing in a British 13 A box. Plug system comes before colour, and colour comes before the £6.99 price that looks like a bargain. The six listings in our set, captured on 20 October 2026, are all Schuko or System 55 inserts. None of them is a BS 1363-2 socket. The ranked table is the [Gira socket comparison](/hub/sockets-and-extension-leads/gira-socket). What you are actually buying on amazon.co.uk

In this extract, a Gira socket means a 16 A Schuko outlet or a System 55 insert where the listing states a current. Type F, Schuko, and no plug on an insert all point the same way: two round pins, not the three rectangular pins of a UK plug. Gira’s catalogue also contains BS 1363-2 articles, including the 2776 family, with screw fixing and a 13 A rating. Those articles are not in the six rows we kept. If your appliances use UK plugs, a pure white Gira photo is still the wrong socket. Price and stars do not change the pin geometry.

Checks in order: plug, frame, finish, shutter, box

Start with the plug system. Read the title and the technical block for Schuko, Type F, or 16 A. If any of those appear and you need a UK 13 A socket, stop. The Gira Schuko vs BS 1363 page is that fork. Do not make it fit with pressure on the pins. The IET has warned that non-matching pins damage shutters. Next, ask whether a frame is in the box. 044027 says the frame is not included. The Gira System 55 socket page explains insert, cover, and frame.

Shutters and Safety Plus, without the child-proof claim

A shutter closes the contact openings until a plug pushes it aside. 445303 cites DIN VDE 0620-1 for increased touch protection, which Gira calls Safety Plus. That is a shutter test description, not a promise that a child cannot defeat the outlet, and not a UK safety certificate. VDE’s guidance warns against selling shutters as child-proof. If a listing does not mention a shutter, do not fill the gap from the star rating. 418827 has 4.9 from 128 ratings and still does not state one. 445303 at about £14.00 also prints 32 mm depth and 1.5–2.5 mm² conductors.

Price bands and listings that do not add up

Compare insert-only prices with insert-only jobs. 044027 at about £6.99 is the mechanism. One 5.0 rating, with no review text, tells you almost nothing, and T.N.O. on that listing is not a BS 1363 approval. Matt 418827 at about £12.94 states 16 A and 230 V, without depth or a shutter line. Charcoal 418828 at about £12.71 has the same gaps. Glossy 445303 at about £14.00 is the step up when you want those gaps filled in. The older 018828 at about £7.87 has no reviews and no ampere line, so use it to match an old order number. Confirm 418327 with the seller before you pay about £15.87.

When to leave this category

Leave when the plug in your hand is BS 1363. Gira’s catalogue numbers 2776 and 2782 are described to BS 1363-2, and they are outside this amazon set. Stop and get a competent person when the back box is a mystery, the room is a bathroom or a shower location, or you would be changing a UK socket into a Schuko outlet. Fitting limits sit on the how to fit a Gira socket page.

Common questions

Will a Gira socket from amazon.co.uk take a normal UK plug?
Not the six listings in this comparison. They are Schuko or Type F System 55 inserts, rated 16 A where a current is stated. A BS 1363 plug has rectangular pins and a fuse, and it will not seat safely in a Schuko shutter.
Do I need a separate frame for System 55?
Often, yes. System 55 is a 55 mm module, and the visible surround is a separate design-line part. 044027 states that you are buying an insert. The other listings do not clearly include a frame, so do not assume the £12–£14 rows are complete plates.
What is the difference between matt, glossy, and satin white?
They are different surface finishes, not three names for the same white. 418827 is pure white matt, 445303 is pure white glossy, and 418327’s title is pure white satin. A review on the matt listing tells buyers to choose matt or gloss on purpose. Match the finish already on the wall, then compare shutters.
Which listings state a shutter?
445303 states a shutter and Safety Plus, with DIN VDE 0620-1 cited on the listing. 418327 mentions a shutter in the title, beside conflicting fields, so treat that as unconfirmed. 418827, 418828, 018828, and 044027 do not state a shutter in the capture.
Is Safety Plus the same as child-proof?
No. Safety Plus on 445303 is Gira’s wording for increased touch protection under the DIN VDE 0620-1 citation. VDE tells manufacturers not to advertise electrical outlets as child-proof on the back of a shutter. A shutter reduces one way of touching live parts.
Can I swap this onto my existing UK back box?
Not as a cosmetic plate swap. UK flush boxes to BS 4662 are square, with fixing centres that suit screw-fixed BS 1363 faceplates. Many Schuko inserts use claws and a round device box. If you cannot see the box type, or the circuit is still a UK ring, stop before you order.
