Gira System 55 socket: insert, cover and the frame

Updated: 23 October 2026

The amazon.co.uk title says Gira System 55 socket while the photo shows only a white square. That square is often the insert. The surround can already be on the wall, or it can still be a separate order. This page explains the 55 mm module, what an insert, a cover, and a frame each do, and how Standard 55, E2, and Esprit share that module. The examples are the six Schuko rows in our [Gira socket comparison](/hub/sockets-and-extension-leads/gira-socket). We checked those listings on 20 October 2026 and did not fit the parts. The 55 mm module

Gira treats System 55 as a platform built around a 55 mm insert, so switches and sockets can share one frame. The phrase on a title is a module size, not a promise that the carton holds a complete plate. The 55 mm figure is the insert, not the outer size of the plate on the wall. A frame is wider because of its border. The module also leaves the plug standard open. UK mains are 230 V, and in the six listings we compared the outlets are Schuko, with two round pins. A shared platform does not make those pins a UK 13 A socket. Settle that on the Gira Schuko vs BS 1363 page before you spend time on frames.

Insert, cover, and frame

A finished outlet is three pieces. The insert holds the contacts, the current rating, and the fixing. The cover is the cap your plug meets. The frame is the surround and the design line. 044027 states System 55 and does not include the frame. On 20 October 2026 it was about £6.99, which buys the mechanism only. A cover is a different part. Cover numbers such as 492003 were left out of this set because they are not sockets. Matt 418827 at about £12.94 does not say a frame is included, and the stored fields do not mark System 55.

Standard 55 and other design lines

Standard 55 is a frame range inside System 55. Gira’s FAQ says the name is the surround and the module stays 55 mm. You still buy the frame when the row is insert-only. E2 and Esprit use that same module, so an E2 insert can sit in an Esprit frame, though the edges will not look like one range. Mix them only when you accept that mismatch. 044027’s title lists compatible design lines and remains insert-only. Those names mean the mechanism clips into those frames. They do not put a frame in the carton.

What this amazon set usually ships

On 20 October 2026 the shelf prices were about £6.99 for 044027, about £7.87 for 018828, about £12.94 for 418827, about £12.71 for 418828, about £14.00 for 445303, and about £15.87 for 418327. We are not pricing surrounds. System 55 is explicit on 044027, 018828, 445303, and 418327, and blank on 418827 and 418828. The frame is stated as not included only on 044027. On the other five, budget for a surround until the bullets say it is in the box. 445303 states a shutter, Safety Plus, a depth, and a conductor range. 044027 states none of those. The lower price is the best value when a frame is already on the wall. The order of checks is the Gira socket buying guide.

Matching an existing wall

Match the frame you can see, then the centre. Matt 418827, gloss 445303, satin 418327, anthracite 018828, and charcoal 418828 read as different objects from a metre away. A matt insert in a glossy frame still looks like a patch. White Standard 55 beside white Esprit will not share the same edge. If you cannot name the line, photograph the frame edge and the centre cap. When the listing is insert-only, keep a sound System 55 frame and order the insert to match the centre. If the frame is the broken part, this set does not supply it.

Common questions

What is a Gira System 55 socket?
A Gira System 55 socket is an outlet built on Gira’s 55 mm modular insert. The insert is the working part. A frame from a design line such as Standard 55, E2, or Esprit holds it on the wall, and a cover is the cap.
Is Standard 55 a different size from System 55?
Standard 55 is a design line of frames inside System 55, which is how Gira’s own FAQ describes the two names. The insert stays 55 mm. The outer plate is larger because of the border. You still buy the frame separately.
Do I need a frame for Gira 418827?
Plan for a frame unless the seller states that one is in the box. On the 20 October 2026 capture, 418827 at about £12.94 does not say a frame is included, and the stored fields do not mark System 55.
What is an insert versus a cover?
The insert is the mechanism: the contacts and the part that fixes into the back box. The cover is the visible cap. The frame is the surround. Cover order 492003 and similar covers were left out of this set because they are not sockets.
Can I mix an Esprit frame with an E2 insert?
You can, when both pieces are System 55. E2 and Esprit share the 55 mm module, so an E2 insert can clip into an Esprit frame. The outlet can work while the finishes disagree. Stay in one line on a new run.
Where do Schuko and BS 1363 modules fit on System 55?
Both can exist as 55 mm inserts in Gira’s wider catalogue. The platform is the module size. The plug standard is a separate choice. Every outlet in this six-row amazon.co.uk set is Schuko, with two round pins, not a BS 1363 13 A socket.
