Short 3 way extension lead: measure the path first

Updated: 23 October 2026

The socket is on the skirting beside the television, and a 5 m lead would only coil in the gap behind the unit. A short 3 way extension lead is the bar that reaches that cluster and then stops. Peter F., the DIY & tools editor, compared the amazon.co.uk lengths in this category on 20 October 2026. Prices and review counts are those listings. We did not measure every flex in a lab. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Every row, including the longer ones, is on the [3 way extension lead comparison](/hub/sockets-and-extension-leads/3-way-extension-lead).

Measure before you buy

Measure from the wall socket along the skirting, plus the centimetres the plug needs. Under about 40 cm, a 0.5 m lead can work. Closer to 80 cm, a stated 1 m lead is the safer buy. A slightly short flex gets yanked at the pins. A short lead is not the first half of a daisy-chain. Over 2 m, this page is the wrong one. The 13 A check is on the 3 way extension lead buying guide.

0.5 m in this comparison

Status B076T5GBRF is £7.45, 4.6 from 2,272 reviews, stated as 0.5 m. Treat the 3,120 W and 13.6 A lines as one 13 A lead. A reviewer measured about 450 mm. Etykir B0FHVT4M6N is the other half-metre bar, £9.99, 4.7 from 92 reviews, with one switch for the whole unit. Choose Status for the larger review file if you do not need a rocker.

About 1 m options

Choose about 1 m when 0.5 m will not dress around a desk leg. Pro Elec PELB1801 is the plain white bar at £8.97, and a review puts the cable 10–15 cm short. Pro Elec B00YA3POQI has 2,748 reviews, but the title says 90 cm and a bullet says 1 metre. If your measure is tight, do not buy a page that disagrees with itself. Switches are on the switched or unswitched 3 way extension lead page.

Trip hazards and tidy routing

A 0.5 m lead behind a TV unit never crosses the rug. The same lead across a bedside path is a trip. Dress the cable along the skirting. Etykir claims two mounting holes. Status does not. If the only tidy route is longer than the lead, use one longer lead. Heat and daisy-chaining are on the how to use a 3 way extension lead page.

If the cable comes up short

A flex far shorter than the title is a Consumer Rights Act 2015 return, not a reason to daisy-chain. Expect small gaps: about 450 mm on a Status lead sold as 500 mm, 10–15 cm under a metre on a Pro Elec, and a listing that already prints both 90 cm and 1 m. Measure on a table before you fish the lead into the unit. A moulded plug is normal, and you do not shorten the flex by opening it. Surge joules and USB outputs do not make a short cable longer.

Common questions

Is 0.5 m enough behind a TV?
It is enough when you have measured the skirting path and it is comfortably under half a metre, including the plug. Status and Etykir are the 0.5 m rows in this set. A reviewer found a Status lead closer to 450 mm, so a path you measured at 500 mm can come up short. If the television plugs sit in a recess and the socket is on the adjacent wall, step up to a stated 1 m lead instead of hoping the half-metre flex will stretch.
When should I choose 1 m instead?
Choose about 1 m when the path is roughly 60–90 cm, or when the cable must rise through a desk grommet. Pro Elec PELB1801 states 1 m and has no switch. Pro Elec B01LCZM2KC states 1 m with a switch per socket. Avoid B00YA3POQI if you need the listing to pick one length, because the title and a bullet disagree. A metre of spare, coiled in the walkway, is worse than a slightly longer dressed run along the skirting.
Are short leads less safe?
A short lead is not a lower amp rating. It is still one 13 A plug unless the product is marked lower. The gain is less spare cable to trip on and less flex to damage, provided the run does not strain the plug. BEAMA's size hint for flex up to 2 m is a minimum of 1 mm². An Etykir reviewer reports 1.0 mm² on that short sheath. Outdoor use is not safer because the cable is short. None of these bars is an outdoor lead.
Why do reviews say the cable is shorter than advertised?
Because some are. A Status buyer measured about 450 mm against a 500 mm claim. A Pro Elec buyer put a 1 m cable 10–15 cm short. Separately, one listing prints 90 cm and 1 m at the same time, so the argument starts before delivery. Manufacturing tolerance explains a centimetre or two. It does not explain a different product from the title. Measure, and return a large shortfall rather than chaining another lead.
Can I wall-mount a short bar?
Only if that listing says so. Etykir's bullets include two mounting holes. PIBEEX is marked as wall mounting. Status does not claim it, so a screw is not part of the bargain. A mounted bar stays put when you pull a charger, which matters in a tight TV cupboard. Check that the screws are in the box before you drill. Several pages in this set never state the fixings.
