3 way extension lead buying guide: fuse, flex, load

Updated: 23 October 2026

The double socket behind the television is already full, and a lamp or a router still needs a plug. A 3 way extension lead buying guide starts there: one BS 1363 plug, a flex, and three shuttered sockets that share a single fuse. Peter F., the DIY & tools editor, checked the amazon.co.uk listings for this category on 20 October 2026, with shelf prices from £4.01 to £16.99. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. The ranked table is on the [3 way extension lead comparison](/hub/sockets-and-extension-leads/3-way-extension-lead). This page is the order of checks.

What a 3-way lead is

A 3-way extension lead here is a portable trailing socket for the UK: a Type G plug, a flex, and three shuttered BS 1363 sockets. It is not a 4-gang strip, a cable reel, or a cube with no flex. Shutters should close when the plug is out. Electrical Safety First treats a normal lead as 13 A in total.

Checks before you compare

A UK extension plug uses a BS 1362 fuse, normally 13 A, to protect the flex. If the listing also prints a lower figure, plan on the lower one. Status prints 3,120 W and 13.6 A. A 3,250 W label is 13 A times 250 V, not extra room. Pro Elec B00YA3POQI says 90 cm and 1 metre. Length sits on the short 3 way extension lead page.

Cable length and flex

Stated lengths run from 0.5 m on Status and Etykir to about 3 m on BEVA. PIBEEX states 1.5 m and Hulker's lead is 1.6 m. BEAMA looks for flex of at least 1 mm² up to 2 m. None of these is an outdoor lead. Placement is on the how to use a 3 way extension lead page.

Switches, USB, and surge

Status and two plain Pro Elec bars state no switch. Etykir and Hulker have one switch for the whole unit. Pro Elec PELB1761, PIBEEX, Mscien and BEVA put a switch on each socket. A neon is not surge protection, and it does not add amps. BEVA's USB-C port does not support USB Power Delivery. A surge line with no joules does not lift the 13 A limit. That fork is on the switched or unswitched 3 way extension lead page.

When to stop shopping

Stop for two heaters, or for a kettle and a toaster on one extension. Electrical Safety First says one extension per wall socket. A scorched plate, or a breaker that trips with no obvious overload, is a registered electrician's job. A socket that will not grip is a Consumer Rights Act 2015 return, not a prompt to chain a second bar.

Common questions

Do three sockets mean 39 A or 13 A each?
Three sockets on a normal UK extension lead share one plug and one fuse, usually 13 A. Electrical Safety First treats that as the total, not as 13 A per socket. A 3,250 W label is 13 A times 250 V. If the same listing also prints 2,500 W or 10 A, use the lower figure. A lamp, a router and a charger fit that ceiling. A kettle and a toaster together do not.
What fuse should a UK extension lead have?
The plug should carry a BS 1362 fuse, normally 13 A, which protects the flex. A 3 A fuse is for a low-power appliance plug, not a way to make an extension safer while you hang a heater on it. If the page never shows a fuse rating, you do not have the check BEAMA's checklist asks for. Do not open the plug to experiment if you are not used to wiring one.
How do I know the cable length is honest?
Compare the title with the bullets and the specification before you pay. Status states 0.5 m. Several bars state 1 m. Pro Elec B00YA3POQI says 90 cm in the title and 1 metre in a bullet, so that length is not established. Reviewers sometimes measure a flex short of the claim, including about 450 mm on a Status lead sold as 500 mm. If the gap you measured is tight, buy the length the page agrees on, then measure the flex when it arrives.
Do I need a switch on every socket?
You need one only if you want to leave a router on and turn a lamp off without pulling plugs. A single master switch, as on Etykir or the Hulker cube, kills the whole cluster. An unswitched bar, such as Status, is enough when everything can stay live. Switches do not increase the amp rating. Wide plugs can sit over the rockers and block them.
When is a cube wrong and a bar right?
A bar puts the three sockets at the end of the flex, away from the wall plate. A cube such as Hulker occupies the wall socket itself, and reviews describe it pulling out when a plug is removed. London Fire Brigade prefers a fused inline lead over a plug-in cube. Choose the cube only if you want its USB ports and the block can stay seated. Choose the bar if the cluster has to sit on a desk or inside a TV unit.
Should I pay extra for USB or surge on a 3-gang lead?
Pay for USB only when the ports and their limits are printed. BEVA's USB-C port does not support USB Power Delivery. A surge claim with no joule number does not raise the 13 A limit and is not overload protection. If the length or the switch layout is already wrong, USB will not fix it. Phone charging can live on a USB port. A laptop still wants its own mains adaptor in an AC socket.
