25m cable reel buying guide: voltage, cut-out, load

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are about to run a mower or a workshop tool from a socket a short lead will not reach, and the 25 m reels look alike. This 25m cable reel buying guide is the order before the star rating: voltage and plug, the shared 13 A ceiling, the thermal cut-out, then whether outdoor survives the bullet. Prices are the amazon.co.uk snapshot on the [25m cable reel comparison](/hub/sockets-and-extension-leads/25m-cable-reel) for 19 October 2026. We did not lab-test a drum. Voltage and the plug

A household tool in the UK expects about 230 V to 240 V and a square-pin BS 1363 plug with a BS 1362 fuse. Most reels here are that object: three or four sockets, a 13 A headline, and a lead you unwind. The exception is the yellow Masterplug LVCT2516/2-MP at about £35.99. The title says 110 V site power, there are two sockets, and the bullets cite BS EN 60309 as well as BS EN 61242. It will not run a square-pin mower, and an adaptor is the wrong repair. Those bullets also mention home, garden and DIY. If you already own 110 V tools, use the 110V or 230V cable reel page. Otherwise leave the yellow reel on the shelf.

13 A, the wound load, and the cut-out

Thirteen amps is the unwound rating, often printed as 3,120 W at 240 V. Four sockets share that ceiling. Desiretech prints 13 A, 3,120 W and 240 V together. Others stop at 13 A, and the Daewoo EXT1035 prints no amp rating. You cannot invent the missing figure from a neighbour's page. Electrical Safety First says cable left on the drum is often only safe at about 3 A to 4 A. A Status review says 3,120 W falls to 1,200 W if the reel is not fully unwound. That is a review, not a specification. The UK note in BS EN 61242 says the BS 1363 fuse does not protect coiled cable. Every powered reel here claims a cut-out. You still unwind before a heavy tool. Brennenstuhl bullets that name a cable say H05VV-F 3G1.5, a PVC flex.

Cable, sockets, and outdoor words

Green flex is easy to see. It is not an IP rating. The Status S25M13ACR2 title says outdoor, and a YESSS page for that part says indoor use only. Desiretech says indoor use. Daewoo says avoid wet conditions. The black Brennenstuhl bullets say the cable is for indoor use. SLx says outdoor in the title, and a review says the maker's sheet says indoor. The Pro-XT file has no IP rating. A live FAQ on amazon.co.uk on 19 October 2026 called it IP20. IP44 is claimed only on the 110 V reel. The Brennenstuhl 3G1.5 line is 1.5 mm² of PVC. If a listing prints neither type nor size, you do not yet know what is on the drum. Rain and the RCD are on the outdoor cable reel 25m page.

What the review count is worth

Stars are what buyers wrote, not a lab rank. The Work Power is 4.7 from 4,909 reviews at about £24.00. The Pro-XT is 4.7 from 3,621 at about £36.50, with a five-year warranty bullet and a warranty field of N/a. Status is 4.6 from 21,068 reviews and rank 1 in cord reels. That volume does not overturn a trade page that says the part is for indoor use only. IONOS repeats the same count. The steel Brennenstuhl is 4.8 from 15 reviews, and one review is about a 50 m reel. Who each listing fits is on the best 25m cable reel page.

When a socket beats any reel

A reel is a temporary lead. If you need power in the same place every week, a new socket on a proper circuit is the better buy, and a registered electrician does that work. Read a row for voltage, the shared 13 A ceiling, the cut-out, and a weather line you can point at. Joining two reels to stretch further is the habit Electrical Safety First tells you to drop.

Common questions

What does a thermal cut-out do that the plug fuse does not?
The BS 1363 fuse protects against a fault at the current it is marked for. The UK note in BS EN 61242 says that fuse does not protect cable left coiled on the drum. The cut-out opens when the reel gets too hot. It is not an RCD.
Is 1.25 mm² enough on a 25 m reel?
Some retail cards for other 25 m 13 A reels print 1.25 mm². That is their card, not a figure you can paste onto these amazon listings, because most of them do not print a cross-section. Brennenstuhl bullets that name a cable say H05VV-F 3G1.5, which is 1.5 mm² of PVC. If your page prints neither size nor type, wait for the label on the drum.
Why do some listings print 3,120 W and others say nothing about a coiled rating?
3,120 W is 13 A at 240 V, the unwound headline. Desiretech prints it. Many others print only 13 A. These amazon files do not print a coiled wattage. A review mentions 1,200 W coiled on the Status page. Keep that inside that review, and read the label on the reel you unpack.
Does heavy duty mean rubber cable?
No. In this set it is a title phrase. The cables that are actually named are H05VV-F, a PVC flex, on the Brennenstuhl reels. A steel drum on the dearest Brennenstuhl does not change that PVC into outdoor rubber. If you need a rubber lead, the listing has to say so. A green photo is not that sentence.
Should I trust 21,068 reviews on the IONOS listing?
Treat them as the Status reviews. The count matches S25M13ACR2, the early texts match, and the brand field says Status. You are looking at one sample on two listings, priced at about £33.08 against about £25.75 on the Status page.
