USB-C extension tower or strip: footprint, not watts

Updated: 23 October 2026

A tower looks more powerful because the sockets climb instead of lining up. In this folder that impression is wrong. A USB-C extension tower or strip is a choice about where the UK plugs and the USB-C cables sit, not about how many watts the port negotiates. The twelve listings on the [extension lead with USB-C comparison](/hub/sockets-and-extension-leads/extension-lead-with-usb-c) make the split obvious: the 12-socket TESSAN states 15 W, and the four-socket MINGWU states 45 W. This page stays with footprint and cable routing.

A tower changes the footprint, not the amp rating

More outlets are not more amps. A tower still ends in one plug. The TESSAN 12-way is printed at 13 A and 3,250 W, with USB-C at 15 W maximum, a 2 m lead and 900 J, at £26.99. Buyers use the spaced sockets behind a television. The plug table says Type B on a UK model. One review describes a unit that overheated after two days. VoltFlow is the six-socket tower at £19.99. Eight USB ports share 3.8 A at 5 V. You still plan the load as one 13 A plug. Search pages often glue 12 sockets to 65 W. That is not this TESSAN. Who should buy it for phones is on the best USB-C extension lead page.

USB-C on the top or on the side

Reviews of the TESSAN 8-way place the USB ports on the top, which is easier from a bedside. The same reviews include a USB-C port that did not work. Top-mounted ports change the reach. They do not fix a dead port. MINGWU is a tower as well, about 14.4 × 6.9 cm, and reviews say the side sockets take bulky UK plugs without blocking the next one. That is a footprint point. The same listing is the 45 W port, on a 10 A table. Send the watts to the USB-C Power Delivery extension lead page.

A strip or a cube when the desk is the point

Use a strip when the lead should run along a skirting and you want a switch you can see. HANYCONY has four sockets, a switch on each, two USB-C ports sharing 3.1 A, wall keyholes and a 1.8 m lead, at £15.99. Reviewers say bulky adaptors cover the switches. The PARTH cube is about 64 mm across, with three sockets, one USB-C port and a 2 m cable one review calls stiff. It belongs beside a chair. The 18 W claim stays on the Power Delivery page. Here the cube is simply small.

Do not read watts off the shape

The 12-socket tower is the 15 W listing. The 45 W port is a four-socket tower on a 10 A table. HANYCONY’s switched strip shares 3.1 A and states no wattage. Standing either of them on the floor does not move those numbers. ROOTOMA stops at 1.5 m. Both TESSAN towers state 2 m. MINGWU’s table is blank. You do not daisy-chain a second lead to close the gap. The order of checks is the USB-C extension lead buying guide.

Common questions

Does a tower charge faster than a strip?
No. Charging speed is the USB-C wattage, not the height. The TESSAN 12-way tower states 15 W. HANYCONY’s flat strip states no wattage and shares 3.1 A. MINGWU’s four-socket tower states 45 W on USB-C1. The tallest lead here is not the one with the higher port.
Where do the USB-C cables go on a tower?
On the TESSAN 8-way, reviews place the USB ports on the top, which helps on the floor. VoltFlow puts eight USB ports on the tower with six sockets, so phone cables can hang clear of the plugs. MINGWU’s reviews talk about side sockets for bulky mains plugs. Check the face you will actually reach.
Will large UK plugs block each other on a strip?
They can. HANYCONY reviews say bulky adaptors cover the individual switches. A tower such as the TESSAN 12-way or MINGWU gives each plug a side face, which is why buyers mention spaced sockets behind a television. You still have one plug’s amp rating, whether or not the plugs touch.
When is the PARTH cube enough?
When you need three sockets and one USB-C port beside a chair, and a row along the skirting would be in the way. The body is about 64 mm across and 68 mm tall, on a 2 m lead. One review calls that cable stiff. It is the wrong shape for twelve sockets, and the 18 W claim is a separate power decision.
Is a 12-socket tower still a 13 A lead?
Yes. The TESSAN 12-way prints 13 A and 3,250 W, with USB-C at 15 W maximum and 900 J. Twelve sockets share that plug. MINGWU’s tower is lower still, at 10 A and 2,500 W, even though it has only four sockets. Count the fuse, not the outlets.
Does a shorter cable matter more than the shape?
Often, yes. Stated lengths run from ROOTOMA at 1.5 m to several leads at 2 m, and MINGWU’s table leaves length blank. A tower that is 30 cm too short still does not reach. Do not plug a second extension into it. Move the lead, or have a socket added, before you argue about tower versus strip.
