A garden socket is a weatherproof 13 A outlet for a UK garden, patio, carport or shed wall. You buy one so a mower, a pressure washer, a pond pump or a light can leave an indoor floor socket. Shoppers choose a hard-wired twin, a plug-in twin with a flex and a BS 1363 plug, a rewireable inline connector, or an enclosure around a separate lead. A garden and IP66 title can still be either a hard-wired face or a plug-in box. It is not a cable reel and not a Wi-Fi plug. Reels sit in the [outdoor cable reel](/hub/sockets-and-extension-leads/outdoor-cable-reel) comparison. Judge the type, then the IP numeral on that listing. IP66 means dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets with the enclosure closed as tested, not immersion. IP44 and IP54 are lower claims. A 30 mA RCD belongs on the supply. A portable plug-in RCD is not what regulation 411.3.3 describes for a new fixed socket-outlet. Two switched outlets on one 13 A plug are not 26 A. A hard-wired face needs a suitable cable and a competent person.

A garden socket is a weatherproof 13 A outlet for a UK garden, patio, carport or shed wall. You buy one so a mower, a pressure washer, a pond pump or a light can leave an indoor floor socket.

The best garden sockets in detail

SURAIELEC IP66 double, 10 m

Rank 1

SURAIELEC IP66 double, 10 m

∼£29

Our view

The SURAIELEC MP22N-10M is a grey plug-in twin with a 10 m lead, printed at 13 A, 250 V and 3250 W, weighing 1.71 kg. The star line is 4.8 from only 21 amazon.co.uk ratings, captured at £28.99, so the high average sits on a small sample. Independent switches are stated, and the bullets mention a buckle and a silicone cover. One reviewer said the screws that join the socket to the back box were not usable and fitted other screws, which is the fitting complaint behind the score deduction. No RCD is stated, dimensions and warranty are absent, and the country of origin is China. Use it when you have measured about 10 m to an indoor socket and you accept that 21 ratings are not 11,000. Skip it if the wall screws have to be the ones in the bag.

Pros

  • 10 m pre-wired lead, IP66, 13 A, 250 V and 3250 W printed
  • Independent switches stated, with a buckle and silicone cover in the bullets
  • 4.8 stars, from 21 ratings
  • 1.71 kg, ABS and polycarbonate

Cons

  • Only 21 ratings
  • One review says the joining screws were not usable
  • No RCD, no dimensions and no warranty in the file
  • £28.99 for a lead a hard-wired twin would not need

Best for: You measured about 10 m from an indoor 30 mA socket to the place the box will sit.

Less suitable: You want a large review sample, usable factory screws, or a socket with no lead.

Common questions

How long is the lead?

The title, model MP22N-10M and the included-components line say 10 m.

What wattage is printed?

3250 watts, next to 250 volts and 13 A.

What did reviews say about the screws?

One reviewer said the screws that join the socket to the back box were not usable and fitted other screws.

BG Storm IP66 double

Rank 2

BG Storm IP66 double

∼£10

Our view

The BG Storm WP22 is a hard-wired grey twin you mount and connect yourself: the amazon.co.uk file lists no plug, IP66, two switched outlets with LED indicators, 13 A, 250 V and 3250 W, at 399 g and about 16.5 cm square. Across 11,139 ratings the line is 4.7, the largest sample in this set, captured at £9.99 on 21 October 2026. That volume is why it takes the top-pick place when it ties on score with the RICOKEY twin. The box does not include a lead, so a search that expected a flex leaves you with terminals only. No RCD is stated, and the file names IP66 without a BS number. The materials bullet says 25 years while the spare-part field says 1 year, so the warranty is not one figure. It is the hard-wired row to start from when a competent person will bring a cable to an exposed wall, and the wrong carton if you needed to plug in tonight.

Pros

  • Hard-wired IP66 twin, two switched outlets, LED indicators, 13 A, 250 V and 3250 W printed
  • £9.99 and 4.7 from 11,139 amazon.co.uk ratings, the largest sample here
  • Polycarbonate, about 16.5 cm square, 399 g
  • No 110 V, 3 A or Type B conflict in this file

Cons

  • No lead in the box
  • No RCD stated, and no BS number in the amazon.co.uk file
  • Warranty cells disagree: a 25-year materials bullet against a 1-year spare-part field

Best for: You are fitting a permanent outdoor twin and a competent person will connect a proper cable on a 30 mA supply.

Less suitable: You wanted a flex in the carton, an in-box RCD, or a lead you can unplug at the end of the day.

Common questions

Does this BG socket include a cable?

No. The plug-type field says no plug, and the included-components line is the weatherproof twin socket only.

Is it switched?

The title says double switched, and the bullets add LED power indicators.

What IP rating is printed?

The title and bullets say IP66.

RICOKEY IP66 double

Rank 3

RICOKEY IP66 double

∼£13

Our view

The RICOKEY C660 is sold as a socket-only grey twin: the colour line says socket only, no cable length is printed, and the highlight describes two switched outlets under a storm cover with locking holes. It is £12.98 with 4.7 from 941 amazon.co.uk ratings, the same score as the BG row on a much smaller sample, which is why it carries the best-value place rather than the top pick. Weight is 580 g in polycarbonate, made in China, with a 2-year bullet. Voltage, wattage and dimensions are missing, so you cannot check 230 V or the face size from this file alone. One reviewer first thought water had entered, then said it dripped off the lid when the cover was opened, which is a closed-cover story rather than proof the face stays dry with a plug in. No RCD is stated. Take it when you want another hard-wired IP66 twin and you will live with the blank voltage row.

Pros

  • Socket-only IP66 twin with switched outlets and a storm cover in the highlight
  • £12.98 and 4.7 from 941 ratings, the same score as the BG row
  • Locking holes and a clear cover described
  • 2-year bullet, polycarbonate, 580 g

Cons

  • No lead, and no voltage, wattage or dimensions printed
  • 941 ratings against 11,139 on the BG Storm row
  • One water note was drip off the lid, not a sealed-in-use test

Best for: You want a hard-wired IP66 alternative to the BG row and you can work without a printed voltage.

Less suitable: You need a lead tonight, a BS number on the amazon file, or the largest review sample.

One reviewer first thought water had entered, then said it dripped off the lid when the cover was opened.

Darbony IP66 double

Rank 4

Darbony IP66 double

∼£13

Our view

The Darbony outdoor twin is a black hard-wired IP66 socket at £12.98, 4.7 from 320 amazon.co.uk ratings, weighing 590 g in polycarbonate with a 2-year warranty. The highlight describes a lockable cover and switched outlets, and a review says you supply your own cable, which matches an included-components line of the socket, accessories and a guide. The voltage field says 110 while the plug fields say Type G and 13 A, so 110 V is a catalogue conflict, not the UK supply. Reviews call the screws cheap and the body less robust than MK. No RCD and no dimensions are printed. It is a black hard-wired option at the same shelf price as the RICOKEY row when you will ignore the 110 V cell and bring your own cable. It is a poor match if you needed a lead or a printed 250 V.

Pros

  • Hard-wired black IP66 twin at £12.98
  • 4.7 from 320 ratings
  • Lockable cover and switched outlets in the highlight
  • 2-year warranty, polycarbonate, 590 g

Cons

  • Voltage field says 110 against Type G and 13 A
  • You supply the cable
  • Reviews call the screws cheap and the unit less robust than MK
  • No RCD and no dimensions stated

Best for: You want a black hard-wired twin and you will treat 110 V as a bad field, not the supply.

Less suitable: You need a lead in the box, a clean 230–250 V line, or a body reviewers compare with MK.

A review says you provide your own cable. The included-components line is the socket, accessories and a user guide.

What do reviews say about the screws?

One review calls the screws cheap, and another calls the unit less robust than MK.

Masterplug weatherproof box

Rank 5

Masterplug weatherproof box

∼£18

Our view

The Masterplug WBXBFG10B-MP is a dark grey enclosure, 351 by 220 by 126.5 mm and 2 kg, holding a 10 m four-gang lead rather than an IP66 twin. The bullets say IP54 and cite BS EN 62208:2011, at £17.99 with 4.6 from 8,657 ratings and a 2-year manufacturer warranty. The amperage field says 10 A and the plug-type field says Type B, while the item type describes a 13 A lead, so those cells stay as conflicts. Several reviews say the gasket pops out or the lid will not close once the lead is inside, and one review reports winter leaks. No switch is stated. It earns a place when a timer or a tall plug will not fit under a twin lid. It is not the weatherproof double socket a short title search suggests.

Pros

  • Enclosure plus a 10 m four-gang lead, 4.6 from 8,657 ratings
  • About 351 by 220 by 126.5 mm, with room for a taller plug
  • IP54 in the bullets, and BS EN 62208:2011 named
  • £17.99 and a 2-year manufacturer warranty

Cons

  • Not an IP66 twin socket
  • 10 A and Type B fields conflict with a 13 A item type
  • Gasket and lid complaints, including a winter leak
  • No switch stated

Best for: A timer or a bulky plug will not close inside a twin cover, and IP54 matches the spot you have in mind.

Less suitable: You wanted an IP66 double, a clean 13 A Type G row, or a lid that reviewers say stays shut in winter.

Zenmos IP66 double, 10 m

Rank 6

Zenmos IP66 double, 10 m

∼£30

Our view

The Zenmos MP22-N is a plug-in twin with a 10 m lead at £29.99, 4.6 from 508 ratings, about 17 by 11.5 cm and 1.72 kg. The specification field says 13 A and a highlight line says 3 A, so the card keeps 13 A and flags the highlight rather than averaging them. Reviews describe plugging the lead into an existing socket, including an outdoor one, which is a second socket on a lead, not a new circuit. Unused cable entries were not sealed, a clip came off, and cable clips were the wrong size. Voltage is printed as 220, with no wattage and no warranty. No RCD is stated. Take the 10 m length only if you cap every unused hole and you ignore the 3 A line.

Pros

  • 10 m lead, IP66, and a lockable clear cover in the bullets
  • 4.6 from 508 ratings, a larger plug-in sample than the 21-rating 10 m row
  • Switch and indicator in the highlight
  • About 17 by 11.5 cm and 1.72 kg

Cons

  • Highlight says 3 A while the amperage field says 13 A
  • Unused entries left unsealed, a clip failed, and cable clips were the wrong size
  • £29.99, with no RCD stated
  • Voltage printed as 220, and wattage missing

Best for: You want a 10 m plug-in twin with hundreds of ratings and you will seal every spare hole.

Less suitable: You will trust the 3 A highlight, or you only needed a 3 m lead.

Masterplug inline socket

Rank 7

Masterplug inline socket

∼£10

Our view

The Masterplug IPS is an orange rewireable 13 A trailing socket, about 200 g, not a wall twin. The bullets say splash-proof and dust-resistant IP44, with CE and IEC named, at £9.83 and 4.5 from 1,203 ratings. You wire your own flex into it. The title gives 17 by 6.5 cm while a dimensions field says 17 by 17 by 17 cm, so the title is the figure to use. Reviews report over-tight or soft screws, a snapped cord-grip screw, and one unit that arrived with no internal terminals. IP44 is splash, not the jet rating printed on the IP66 twins. It is the low-priced way to repair a flex you already own. It is the wrong object if you wanted two switched outlets on a wall.

Pros

  • Rewireable 13 A inline connector at £9.83
  • 4.5 from 1,203 ratings
  • IP44 splash rating stated, with CE and IEC named
  • About 200 g, orange plastic

Cons

  • Not a wall socket, and no lead included
  • IP44 is splash, not powerful water jets
  • Screw and cord-grip failures, including one unit with no internal terminals
  • Dimensions field disagrees with the 17 by 6.5 cm title

Best for: You are repairing a 13 A flex and splash resistance is enough for where that joint will sit.

Less suitable: You need a wall twin, an IP66 face, or a lead already fitted.

Kukkasilta IP66 double, 15 m

Rank 8

Kukkasilta IP66 double, 15 m

∼£50

Our view

The Kukkasilta MP22-N-15M is the longest plug-in twin here, a 15 m lead at £49.99, 4.5 from 31 ratings and 2.29 kg, with bullets of up to 3000 W, 3G1.5 mm² and a 13 A fuse. The highlight names hot tubs and pool pumps. One review says a 13 A hot tub melted the socket and another says a hot tub was fine, so the bullet is not a supply rating. The printed part line MP22-N-10M does not match the 15 m title, one plug field says Type B beside Type G, and switched outlets are not clearly stated. Warranty is 1 year in a field and 5 years in a bullet. No RCD is stated. It is only worth that price if you have measured 15 m and the load stays inside one 13 A fuse. It is the wrong row for a hot tub or for a listing that has to agree with itself.

Pros

  • 15 m lead, the longest in this set
  • IP66, up to 3000 W and a 13 A fuse in the bullets
  • 3G1.5 mm² stated
  • 4.5 from 31 ratings, at 2.29 kg

Cons

  • £49.99, with a hot-tub melt report beside a review that says a hot tub was fine
  • Part number MP22-N-10M printed on a 15 m title
  • Type B beside Type G, and switching not clearly stated
  • No RCD, and the warranty cells disagree at 1 year and 5 years

Best for: You have measured about 15 m to an indoor 30 mA socket and the load is one 13 A plug.

Less suitable: You want a hot tub, a part number that matches the length, or a shorter lead at a lower price.

BSEED IP66 double, 6 m

Rank 9

BSEED IP66 double, 6 m

∼£26

Our view

The BSEED W-PC146MP22-N-6M-EU is a grey plug-in twin with a 6 m lead, two independently switched 13 A outlets and a red LED on each, listed at 240 V. It is £25.55 with 4.5 from 17 ratings and a weight of 1.2 kg. The part number ends in -EU while the plug fields say Type G, so the plug in the hand matters more than the suffix. One of seven review texts says the socket melted with the plug still in it, which is why the score loses points on a tiny sample. The bullets mention other lengths that are not this ASIN. No wattage, dimensions, warranty or RCD appear. A 6 m reach is the reason to look at it. A melt report on 17 ratings is a reason to leave it if a mower or a pressure washer will sit on that face for long.

Pros

  • 6 m lead, IP66, two switched outlets with red LEDs
  • 13 A and 240 V printed
  • 1.2 kg at £25.55
  • A mid length between the 3 m kits and the 10 m kits

Cons

  • Only 17 ratings
  • One review says the socket melted with the plug in
  • Part number ends -EU against Type G plug fields
  • No wattage, warranty or RCD

Best for: You have measured a 6 m run and you accept a very small review sample.

Less suitable: A melt report matters to you, or a 3 m kit or a hard-wired twin would reach.

LIKEEM IP66 double, 3 m

Rank 10

LIKEEM IP66 double, 3 m

∼£19

Our view

The LIKEEM Socket-01 is a plug-in 13 A twin with a 3 m lead of 3 x 1.5 mm² and a UK plug, at £18.99 and 4.4 from 44 ratings. The face is about 20 by 11.5 cm and 1.03 kg, with two outlets, separate switches and indicator lights. Reviews describe screwing it to a wall and plugging it in, which is the job this length is for when the indoor socket is close. The bullets say the plug has overload protection, and no RCD is stated. Voltage, wattage, colour, material and warranty are all missing. Forty-four ratings is a thin sample next to the BG row. It suits a short run to one mower or one pond pump when the total stays inside that single 13 A plug. It does not suit a 10 m reach, or a board with no 30 mA device.

Pros

  • 3 m UK lead, 3 x 1.5 mm², IP66
  • Separate switches and indicator lights
  • Overload protection stated on the plug
  • About 20 by 11.5 cm, 1.03 kg, £18.99

Cons

  • 4.4 from only 44 ratings
  • No RCD, and voltage and wattage not printed
  • Material, colour and warranty missing
  • 3 m will not reach a far shed

Best for: The indoor 30 mA socket is within about 3 m and you want two switched faces on one plug.

Less suitable: You need 6 m or more, a large review count, or an RCD inside the box.

SURAIELEC IP66 double, 3 m

Rank 11

SURAIELEC IP66 double, 3 m

∼£18

Our view

The SURAIELEC MP22N-3M is the 3 m version of the grey plug-in twin, printed at 13 A, 250 V and 3250 W, weighing 990 g, at £17.99. The star line is 4.4 from 30 ratings. Independent switches and an LED are in the highlight, and the bullets name PC+ABS plus a 13 A fuse. One review says the cover can stay shut with a plug inserted. The same small sample calls the padlock clip small and weak, says blanking caps pulled out, and says one plug had to be reseated. No RCD and no dimensions are printed. It is the short plug-in row when 3 m reaches and you will check the clip before you leave a plug out overnight. Thirty ratings are not a reason to treat it as better evidenced than the LIKEEM 3 m row.

Pros

  • 3 m lead, IP66, 13 A, 250 V and 3250 W printed
  • Independent switches and an LED highlight
  • One review says the cover can close over an inserted plug
  • £17.99, 990 g, and a 13 A fuse in the bullets

Cons

Common questions

What is in the box?

The listing says the outdoor socket, an accessory pack and a 3 m lead. Reviews also mention screws, plugs, pads and clips.

Can the cover close on a plug?

One review says this cover can stay shut with a plug inserted.

What was criticised?

The padlock clip was called small and weak, blanking caps pulled out, and one plug had to be reseated.

How we compared

Eleven amazon.co.uk listings were scored for this page. Shelf prices, stars and review counts are the figures in those stored listings, captured on 21 October 2026. There was no lab test. Star points are 50 plus 20 for each star above 3.5. Review points are capped at 12. IP66 adds 6, and IP44 or IP54 adds 3. Switched outlets add 3. A pre-fitted UK lead, or a hard-wired socket with the terminals described, adds 2. A named CE, IEC or BS EN line adds 2. A review that says the socket melted subtracts 8. A field that conflicts with a 13 A Type G identity subtracts 4. A repeated fitting fault in the reviews subtracts 3. A tie on that score goes to the larger rating count for the top pick. The weights below are those point caps, adjusted so they sum to 100.

1

Star rating

75%

Star points are 50 plus 20 for each star above 3.5. That is 76 at 4.8 stars, 74 at 4.7, 72 at 4.6, 70 at 4.5 and 68 at 4.4. This is the largest block in the score.

2

Review volume

12%

Review points are the minimum of 12 and a rounded log of the rating count. In this set that is 12 once the count reaches 941, and 5 at 17 or 21 ratings. A small sample cannot carry the top pick when the score is tied.

3

IP numeral

6%

IP66 printed in the title or the bullets adds 6. A printed IP44 or IP54 adds 3. The numeral has to be on that listing. A lower rating is splash or limited dust, not the jet test.

4

Switched outlets

3%

Add 3 when switched outlets are stated on the listing. A switch is not extra current. Two switched faces on one plug remain one 13 A feed.

5

Feed described

2%

Add 2 when a UK lead is pre-fitted, or when the socket is hard-wired and the terminals are described. A missing lead on a hard-wired twin is not scored as a fault if the listing says socket only.

6

Named standard

2%

Add 2 when the file names CE, IEC or a BS EN number. IP66 on its own does not add this point. A standards line is what the listing prints, not a lab certificate.

Garden socket buying guide

The checks run in this order: type, the IP numeral on that listing, a 30 mA RCD on the supply, then whether the load fits one 13 A plug. The table is the eleven stored listings. IP tests and RCD rules below are public UK sources. None of these sockets was hosed in a lab for this page.

What is a garden socket?

A garden socket is a weatherproof 13 A outlet for a UK garden, patio, carport or shed wall. It is not a cable reel and not a Wi-Fi plug. The usual forms are a hard-wired twin with no lead in the carton, a plug-in twin that arrives with a flex and a BS 1363 plug, a rewireable inline connector, or a larger enclosure around an ordinary extension lead. A title that says garden and IP66 can still be a hard-wired face or a plug-in box.

Best for

  • A hard-wired twin on a 30 mA supply, connected by a competent person
  • A plug-in twin that reaches an indoor 30 mA socket for one 13 A load

Not ideal for

  • A hot tub, immersion, or two tools that need more than one 13 A plug
  • A buried shed run or a new circuit with no 30 mA device and no test

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

    Expecting a lead in a hard-wired carton

A socket-only twin has terminals and no flex. If you needed to plug in the same day, that carton is the wrong object. Read the included-components line before you treat a garden title as a ready lead.

  2. 2

Reading two switches as 26 A

Two switched outlets on one BS 1363 plug share one 13 A fuse. A hot-tub bullet is not a higher supply rating. Uncoil the lead, and do not daisy-chain a second reel onto it.

  3. 3

    Trusting a conflicting field

Keep the 13 A Type G title when another field says 110 V, Type B, 3 A or USB ports. Do not average them. A melted outlet in a review is a reason to leave that listing, not a reason to raise the load.

What to weigh up

Type, IP rating and a 30 mA supply

High

Type comes first. A hard-wired wall socket, a plug-in box with a lead, a trailing inline connector and a weatherproof enclosure around a separate lead are different objects. A garden and IP66 title can still be either of the first two. Read the IP numeral on that listing. IP66 is dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets with the enclosure closed as tested. One published summary of the jet test describes a 12.5 mm nozzle, 100 litres a minute, 100 kPa, at 3 m, for at least 3 minutes.

One 13 A plug and listing conflicts

High

A pre-wired kit shares one 13 A fuse across every outlet. Two switches do not make 26 A. A hard-wired socket needs a suitable cable and a competent person. Ordinary flex is not a buried steel-wire-armoured run. Regulation 522.8.10 sets no single depth. A trade note uses about 0.5 m. Uncoil leads under load and do not daisy-chain them. Keep the 13 A Type G identity when a field also says 110 V, Type B, 3 A or USB ports. Do not average those cells into a third figure.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

A permanent outdoor twin

You are fitting a hard-wired twin and a competent person will connect a cable on a 30 mA supply. The BG Storm IP66 double is the top pick at about £9.99, with 4.7 from 11,139 ratings. There is no lead in the box, and no RCD is stated.

A short lead to an indoor socket

You cannot add a circuit, and the indoor 30 mA socket is within about 3 m. The LIKEEM IP66 double is the 3 m plug-in row at about £18.99, with 4.4 from 44 ratings. It will not reach a far shed, and no RCD is in the box.

A pond pump on one 13 A plug

A pond pump or a light still shares one 13 A plug. The Zenmos IP66 double has a 10 m lead at about £29.99, with 4.6 from 508 ratings. A highlight says 3 A while the amperage field says 13 A. Reviews say unused cable entries were left unsealed.

Common questions about garden sockets

Which garden socket is the top pick in this comparison?
The top pick is the BG Storm IP66 double, a hard-wired twin at about £9.99. The amazon.co.uk line in this file is 4.7 from 11,139 ratings. It ties on score with the RICOKEY socket-only twin and takes the top-pick place because the sample is larger. There is no lead in the box, no RCD is stated, and the file names IP66 without a BS number. The materials bullet says 25 years while the spare-part field says 1 year.
Which garden socket is the best value?
The best value is the RICOKEY IP66 double, sold as socket only, at about £12.98, with 4.7 from 941 ratings. It shares the top score and has no 110 V, 3 A or Type B conflict in the file. Voltage, wattage and dimensions are not printed. The Masterplug inline socket is cheaper, at about £9.83, and it is a rewireable trailing connector, not a wall twin.
What does a garden socket cost on amazon.co.uk?
In this 21 October 2026 capture, entry listings run about £9.83 to £12.98. Mid listings, including plug-in twins at 3 m, 6 m and 10 m and an enclosure with a 10 m lead, run about £17.99 to £29.99. The 15 m plug-in twin is about £49.99. Review counts do not follow price. Confirm the live amazon.co.uk price before you buy. These figures are stored shelf prices, not a quote.
What should you check before you buy a garden socket?
Check the type first: hard-wired twin, plug-in lead, inline connector, or an enclosure around a separate lead. Then the IP numeral on that listing. Then a 30 mA RCD on the supply. Then whether the load fits one 13 A plug. A pre-wired kit shares one fuse. Keep a 13 A Type G reading when another field says 110 V, Type B or 3 A. Do not average those cells. Thousands of ratings outweigh a high star line on about 20 reviews.
Does IP66 mean a garden socket is waterproof?
No. IP66 means dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets with the enclosure closed as tested. A published summary of that test describes a 12.5 mm nozzle, 100 litres a minute, 100 kPa, at 3 m, for at least 3 minutes. That is not immersion. A lid held open by a plug is a different case. IP44 is splashing water, not that jet test.
Do two outdoor sockets give you 26 A?
No. A pre-wired kit shares one 13 A fuse across every outlet. Two switches are two ways to turn the faces off, not two supplies. A hard-wired socket still depends on the cable and the protective device on that circuit. A hot-tub line in a bullet is not a supply rating. One review in this set describes a melted outlet on a 13 A hot-tub load, and another says a hot tub was fine.
Should you buy a plug-in garden socket or a hard-wired one?
A plug-in box reaches an indoor 30 mA socket and suits a renter who cannot add a circuit. Treat that lead as temporary, uncoil it, and do not daisy-chain it. A hard-wired twin has no lead in the carton. A competent person connects a suitable cable. Ordinary flex is not a buried armoured run. A line that says no electrician only describes the pre-wired box.
When should you call an electrician?
Call a competent person when there is no 30 mA device, when you need a new circuit or a buried shed run, when you cannot test to BS 7671, or when a socket has melted. In England a new circuit is still notifiable under Part P. Work on an existing circuit outside a bathroom zone is often not notifiable, and it still has to be safe. A long flex you reel across the garden is an outdoor extension lead, not a garden socket.

Our verdict

The top pick is the BG Storm IP66 double at about £9.99, with 4.7 from 11,139 ratings. It ties on score with the RICOKEY twin and takes the top-pick place because the sample is larger. There is no lead in the box, no RCD is stated, and the warranty cells disagree. The best value is the RICOKEY IP66 double at about £12.98, with 4.7 from 941 ratings, the other score of 97, sold as socket only and with no 110 V, 3 A or Type B conflict in the file. Voltage is not printed. The Masterplug inline socket is cheaper, at about £9.83, and it is a rewireable trailing connector, not a wall twin. Scores follow the stored amazon.co.uk listings from 21 October 2026. This page did not run a lab test.
