8 way extension lead buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are about to buy one bar for a television, a desk, or a router. Eight sockets are not eight times the power. Every 8 way extension lead in this amazon.co.uk set still hangs off one 13 A fuse in a UK plug. This buying guide puts the checks in order: the plug and the shutters, the shared load, the cable length, then spacing and switches, and only then surge or USB. The [8 way extension lead comparison](/hub/sockets-and-extension-leads/extension-lead-8-way) holds the product rows and the prices. Listings were read on 20 October 2026. We did not lab-test the bars. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Eight sockets, one fuse

An 8 gang extension lead does not give you more current than a 4 way or a 6 way lead with the same 13 A plug. Electrical Safety First treats most household leads as 13 A devices, and you use one extension per wall socket. Kent Fire and Rescue’s plain ceiling is about 13 A or 3,000 W. A kettle or a fan heater can use most of that budget alone.

Plug, shutters, and listing red flags

Look for a UK 13 A plug and shuttered outlets before you count sockets. BEAMA’s checklist asks for BS 1363 sockets, a 13 A BS 1362 fuse, and at least 1 mm² up to 2 m. Masterplug’s BEN210-MP claims BS 1363-2. Brennenstuhl names H05VV-F 3G1.25. A Type B or Type C cell is a stop. The 5 m Pro Elec is cleaner: both plug fields say Type G.

Length, spacing, and switches

Most bars here are 1.8 m or 2 m, enough on the same wall. Brennenstuhl and Masterplug are 2 m. Open the 5 m Pro Elec if the socket is across the room. Fat plugs leave a socket empty before the fuse is the problem. One illuminated switch turns the whole bar off. A power light only tells you the bar is live.

Surge and USB only if you need them

Surge protection absorbs some spike energy. It does not raise the 13 A limit, and it is not an RCD. Printed figures run from 125 J on Pro Elec to 2,100 J on TOPREK. A title that only says surge, with no joules, is the POWSAF pattern. USB is separate: the ports share about 3.1 A to 3.6 A at 5 V, which is phone charging, not laptop USB Power Delivery. The surge protection guide and the USB guide go further.

What to leave off the bar

Do not plug one extension lead into another. London Fire Brigade says kettles, toasters, and microwaves should not share one extension. Invero’s bullets put heaters, fridges, and washing machines on their own wall socket. None of these listings claim an RCD. Placement is on the how to use an 8 way extension lead page. This page does not name a single winner.

Common questions

Does an 8 way lead give more power than a 4 way or 6 way lead?
No. Eight sockets share one 13 A fuse in the plug. A 4 way lead with the same fuse has the same current ceiling and fewer holes. Kent Fire and Rescue’s plain ceiling is about 13 A or 3,000 W for what runs at the same time. Filling every socket with a phone charger is a spacing problem. Filling them with heaters is an overload.
Why do some listings say 2,990 W and others 3,250 W?
They are describing 13 A at different voltages. Thirteen times 230 V is 2,990 W, which is the SE UKASE figure. Thirteen times 240 V is 3,120 W, which Masterplug prints. Thirteen times 250 V is 3,250 W, which TOPREK prints. The fuse in the plug does not become larger because the marketing line uses 250 V.
What should be marked on the plug and the socket block?
Look for a UK 13 A plug, a 13 A fuse, and shuttered sockets. BEAMA’s checklist points retailers at BS 1363-2 for the sockets, BS 1363-1 for the plug, and a BS 1362 fuse. Masterplug claims BS 1363-2 on the BEN210-MP. If a specification cell says Type B or Type C, stop and check the live photograph before you treat the title as proof of the plug in the box.
When is surge protection worth paying for on an 8 gang bar?
It is worth comparing when a PC or a television is the reason you bought the bar, and when the listing prints a joule number you can set next to another number. It is a weak reason to buy if you only need lamps and a router and a plain 2 m bar already fits. Joules do not let you run more watts, and they are not a substitute for the 13 A fuse or for an RCD.
What is a warning sign of a mismatched listing?
A UK title with a Type B or Type C plug cell, a current field of 4,000 A or 3.4 A where you expected 13 A, or a review count that is identical on two different lengths. The two Pro Elec listings share 1,202 reviews, and the two HANYCONY colours share 2,042. Treat those stars as one pool. A dimensions cell of 6 cm by 8 cm on an eight-way bar is another sign the table was filled badly.
Can I plug one extension lead into another?
No. Electrical Safety First says not to daisy-chain extension leads. You still have one 13 A fuse at the wall, plus another set of contacts that can overheat. If one bar is not enough for the layout of the room, the durable fix is another wall socket, fitted by a registered electrician, rather than a second lead tucked behind the cabinet.
