How to set up an outdoor Wi-Fi socket on 2.4 GHz

Updated: 23 October 2026

The socket is in your hand, or it is already on the wall, and the phone says it cannot find the device. In this set that failure is usually the band, or the wrong app name, rather than a dead outlet. Put the phone on 2.4 GHz, open the app that listing names, and stop if the job has become a new circuit. The three rows, with prices and stars, are on the [outdoor Wi-Fi socket comparison](/hub/sockets-and-extension-leads/outdoor-wi-fi-socket). We did not lab-test a pairing. Put the phone on 2.4 GHz

All three listings are 2.4 GHz only. If the phone is on 5 GHz, the socket never joins. BG's smart FAQ, for BG Smart sockets in general rather than a script for this ASIN, says the phone must be on 2.4 GHz during setup. BG reviews cluster on 5 GHz left on. Knightsbridge says to disable 5 GHz, complete the pair, then turn 5 GHz back on. If the hub cannot separate the bands, the socket still cannot use 5 GHz. Stand where the socket will live, join the 2.4 GHz name, and only then open the app.

Which app, and what the listing already says

Open the app the listing names. Meross B08BFFGH5J says HomeKit on iOS 13 or above, plus the Meross app, Alexa, and Google Assistant, with SmartThings in the highlight. Remote HomeKit needs another Apple device, such as an iPad, a HomePod, or an Apple TV. BG B0BPYWGNKY uses BG Home. The bullet says no hub and no subscription. If Smart Config fails, the BG support hub names AP Config as the fallback for BG Smart sockets. Do not apply that fallback to Meross or Knightsbridge. Knightsbridge B08GGBQCM4 says Tuya SmartLife. Reviews say the instructions say SmartKnight, and several buyers could not find that named app in a UK store. A current SmartLife listing does not erase those reviews. If the booklet and the bullet disagree, follow the bullet.

If it still will not join

Range is the next ordinary failure. Knightsbridge reviews describe a shed or a pond where the signal is too weak. The BG WP22WR, which Screwfix lists as not smart, is not the cure inside this socket. Moving the router, or pairing closer and then refitting, is as far as this page goes. The BG smart FAQ says the physical buttons still switch the socket when Wi-Fi is down. That sentence is the BG FAQ. The Meross plug does not print a local rocker. One Knightsbridge review says the manual override does not work. A short lead, a hinge that blocks bulky plugs, water through a BG cover, or a Knightsbridge lid that will not close over a tall plug are not fixed by another password.

Stop before a new circuit

The Meross lead is a Type G plug. Putting it into an outdoor socket already on a protected circuit is not a new circuit. You still cover the idle socket, stay off a pump, and need the circuit's own 30 mA RCD. None of the three states an RCD in the box. This page does not give wiring steps. BG's power-plug field says no plug, and a separate field says Type B. Knightsbridge's connector field says NEMA 5-15. If you are about to run a new cable or bury a lead, stop. In England and Wales a new circuit is notifiable under the IET Part P FAQ, including garden work. Who should have bought a plug is on the plug-in versus wall page.

Common questions

Why will it not pair while my phone is on 5 GHz?
Because these three listings are 2.4 GHz only. The phone has to be on that band during setup. BG reviews describe the failure when 5 GHz is left on. Knightsbridge's bullet tells you to disable 5 GHz, pair, and then enable it again. A strong 5 GHz signal at the door does not give the socket a 5 GHz radio.
Do I turn 5 GHz back on after pairing?
On the Knightsbridge bullet, yes. It says disable 5 GHz during setup and turn it back on afterwards. The socket stays on 2.4 GHz. The rest of the house can return to the dual-band network. Router menus differ, so this is the pattern on that listing, not a click-path for every hub.
What still works if the Wi-Fi drops, on the BG FAQ?
The BG smart FAQ says the physical buttons still switch the socket if Wi-Fi drops. That FAQ is for BG Smart sockets, and the WP22/HC-01 listing describes touch control. Do not copy that sentence onto the Meross plug, which does not name a local rocker, or onto Knightsbridge, where one review says the manual override does not work.
Is SmartLife in the UK App Store now?
A GB listing for SmartLife: Smart Living is in the UK App Store. That does not wipe the Knightsbridge reviews from people who followed instructions that said SmartKnight and could not find the named app. If the booklet and the amazon bullet disagree, the bullet is the listing we kept, and a missing app is a reason to stop pairing rather than to rewire.
Where do I stop and call an electrician?
Stop when the work is a new circuit, including a new cable to a shed, pond, or garden, which is notifiable in England and Wales under the IET Part P FAQ. Also stop for buried or non-outdoor cable, water already in the box, an unknown RCD, or earth terminals that do not match the instructions. Plugging into a socket you already have is not that job. This page does not describe the connections.
