50m cable reel for the garden: dry sockets and an RCD

Updated: 22 October 2026

Your lawn runs past the last fixed socket, and a 50 m drum feels like the straightforward way to reach the far corner with a mower or trimmer. A 50m cable reel for the garden only makes sense when length, dryness, and protection line up. A title that says outdoor is not that protection. The nine models in the [50m cable reel comparison](/hub/sockets-and-extension-leads/50m-cable-reel) are the scope here. Whether H05VV-F beats a yellow sheath is on the [indoor or outdoor cable reel](/hub/sockets-and-extension-leads/50m-cable-reel/sub/50m-cable-reel-indoor-or-outdoor) page. Use 50 m only when the lawn is actually that far

If a 25 m reel already reaches the far bed fully unwound, 50 m adds weight and a coil you must still lay out. Walk the route first. The shorter length is the 25m cable reel comparison. Green and yellow sheaths help you see the lead. They are not an IP rating, and none of these nine listings prints one. Length does not turn PVC flex into rubber site cable.

Keep the reel and the sockets dry, on an RCD

Electrical Safety First says use an RCD outdoors, keep electricals off wet ground including dew, and unwind fully. None of these nine listings shows an integrated RCD plug. If the consumer unit has no RCD, a plug-in RCD on the supply side is the usual fix. Keep the drum and the sockets on dry paving, not in long grass in a shower. Laying the cable and resetting a cut-out is the how to use a cable reel page.

A mower can fit the unwound rating and still be the wrong reel

The SLx guide prints 960 W wound and 3,120 W extended, and lists typical mower loads of 1,200–1,800 W as an example, not a test of your mower. The cable must be fully off the drum, the load under the extended figure, and you must accept domestic use only, not damp or wet conditions. The amazon title says outdoor and names lawn mowers. Quote the guide. The Brennenstuhl Standard states indoor use and prints H05VV-F 3G1.5, so it is the wrong tool on wet grass. Status and IONOS say outdoor with no IP code. The Masterplug bullets do not claim outdoor use.

A shed that needs power all year is not a reel job

A reel is for occasional tools, not a shed with a freezer and lights on all winter. Fixed wiring belongs to a registered electrician. Stop for burn marks, an RCD that trips the instant you connect, a second cut-out trip after a full unwind and cool-down, or any plan to charge an electric vehicle from the reel.

When the garden reel is the right tool

Use 50 m when you have measured a route that needs it, the sockets stay dry, an RCD is on the supply, and the cable is fully unwound. Quote the manual when the title says outdoor. Leave a stated indoor drum off wet grass, and do not feed a shed all year from the reel.

Common questions

Is 50 m what I need for a long garden, or is 25 m enough?
Measure the path from the fixed socket to the farthest point you will mow, with the cable fully unwound. If 25 m reaches, buy the shorter reel. Fifty metres is for routes that genuinely need it. Extra cable you do not use is weight, rewind, and a coil that must still come off the drum before the full rating applies.
Can I run an electric mower from one of these reels?
Yes, only if the cable is fully unwound, the combined load is under the extended wattage in the manual, the sockets stay dry, and you accept the manual’s environment limit. The SLx guide’s 1,200–1,800 W mower band is an example, not a test of your mower. Read the wattage on the mower. A coiled drum is still on the wound rating, often far below 13 A.
Do I need an RCD as well as the thermal cut-out?
Yes for outdoor use. The cut-out protects the coiled cable from overheating. An RCD protects you from fault current. These nine listings do not show an integrated RCD plug, so they do not replace a missing RCD at the consumer unit. A plug-in RCD on the supply side is the usual fix before the reel goes outside.
Can I mow when the grass is wet or there is dew?
Electrical Safety First says no. Wait until the ground is dry, including morning dew. Wet grass and a domestic reel are a poor pair even when the title says outdoor. The SLx user guide for this family says domestic use only and do not use the reel in damp or wet conditions.
Does a green or yellow cable mean the reel is outdoor rated?
No. Colour is visibility on grass. Outdoor suitability needs a cable code, an IP rating, or a manual limit you can quote. None of these nine amazon.co.uk listings prints an IP rating or H07RN-F. A yellow sheath on the SLx does not override the user guide that says keep it dry.
What if the far end is a shed that needs power all year?
That is fixed installation work for a registered electrician. A cable reel is a temporary supply for tools you unwind and put away. It is not a year-round feed for a freezer, lights, and a charger, and it is not a way to charge an electric vehicle.
